The German description concerning combats around Zboiska is not exactly true.

Polish units temporarily captured Zboiska and the neighbouring hills (including Hill 324), but later - due to some misunderstandings among Polish commanders - when 10th Motorized Brigade was ordered to withdraw to Hungary and abandoned the captured positions, units which were ordered to replace it and occupy these positions, were delayed.

As the result of this mistake, Germans soon re-occupied these abandoned positions without a shot.

I'm placing the scans with description of these combats (in Polish) below.

Just let me know if you want the translation, then maybe something could be done about it.

Cheers,
Peter

Casualties of the 10th Brigade (10 BK) and subordinated units (Group "Żółkiew", cavalry regiment of Rtm. Murasik, small elements from 35 Inf.Div.) during combats near Lwow amounted to (dead, wounded, missing):

15.09.1939 - ca. 60 officers, NCOs and men (including few officers)
16.09.1939 - ca. 110 officers, NCOs and men (including 8 officers)
17.09.1939 - over 130 officers, NCOs and men

In total over 300 dead, wounded or missing officers, NCOs and men.

Of this number (ca. 300), casualties of 24th uhlan regiment (from 10th Brigade) were:

24th Uhlan Regiment (motorized):

15.09.1939 - ca. 30 officers, NCOs and men
16 - 17.09.1939 - ca. 45 officers, NCOs and men

In total ca. 75 casualties during combats near Lwow.

24th uhlan regiment on 01.09.1939 numbered 994 soldiers (860 Poles and 134 Ukrainians).

Total losses of the 24th uhlan regiment (September 1 - September 17) were:

KIA, body evacuated - 40
WIA, evacuated - 91
KIA body captured or WIA in captivity - 40 *
Missing - 23 *
Injured - 1

Total casualties: 195 soldiers.

The Hungarian border was reached by 799 officers, NCOs and men of the regiment.

652 soldiers crossed the border. 147 soldiers decided to stay in Poland.

* Another source reports these casualties together as "Missing" and gives a slightly higher number - 77 instead of 63. This source also says that only 134 soldiers refused to cross the Polish-Hungarian border, while 652 crossed it. And total casualties are reported by this source as 208 men, instead of 195.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

On September 17 the resistance of Gebirgsjägers in the region of Zboiska was finally broken.

Włodarkiewicz gives the following account of German mountain soldiers (pages 110 - 111):
(...) Gebirgsjägers were fighting bravely and defending themselves literally to the last man. During the entire day [Polish] wounded were being transported to the hospital in Dublany. In the afternoon German resistance considerably weakened, a number of MG positions, resistance nests of infantry and observation points of artillery were destroyed. Over the battlefied a German observation plane, which was guiding enemy artillery fire, was still flying. Around 16:00 the Hill 324 west from Zboiska was finally captured. Over fifty dead Gebirgsjägers, abandoned equipment and weapons, i.e. 3 MGs, could be found on its slopes. Col. Maczek evaluated, that the position had been defended by two battalions from 98. and 99. Geb.Jg.Rgts, with support of light artillery and two battalions of heavy artillery. (...)
----------------------------------------------------------------

Group "Żółkiew" (Col. Iwanowski) subordinated to the 10th Mot. Brigade, in total consisted of:

- march battalion of 53 pp under Mjr. Eugeniusz Kubicz *
- march battalion of 40 pp under Cpt. Jan Niedzielski *
- I. battalion of 53 pp (11 DP) under Cpt. Bronisław Wolny
- one MG squadron formed by the Spare Center (OZ) of Kresowa Cav. Brig.
- several foot squadrons formed by the Spare Center (OZ) of Kresowa Cav. Brig.
- battalion formed from castaways of different defeated units under Lt.Col. Adam Radomyski
- reconnaissance unit under Cav.Cpt. Józef Murasik (two march cavalry squadrons of 12th uhlan rgt., one of 6th horse rifle rgt. and one HMG platoon on taczankas) **
- march battalion of Wilenska Cav. Brig. (3 march squadrons) with one troop of 75mm guns
- one more troop of artillery ***
- two pioneer platoons (one foot and one mounted)
- battalion formed in the Training Center of Border Guard in Rawa Ruska
- cyclist company of 11 DP under Lt. Roman Mazurek

Also the entire OZ of Kresowa Cav. Brig. under Lt.Col. Stefan Gołaszewski was subordinated to Group "Żółkiew", but apart from those several squadrons it probably formed no other organized and armed combat units, however, it could have also few hundreds unarmed soldiers who could be used as casualty replacements later.

* March battalions of infantry regiments (pp) were units intended to be used as casualty replacements for combat units. In reality of the Polish Campaign, however, they were often deployed as combat units.

An authorized strength of a Polish march battalion (batalion marszowy) was:

- 18 officers
- 418 NCOs and men
- 216 rifles with bayonets
- 194 carbines with bayonets
- 8 bayonets
- 6 sabers

They didn't have any collective support weapons such as MGs, mortars, etc. unless improvised ad hoc.

** This reconnaissance unit numbered some 300 - 350 men.

*** Report from September 11 mentions it had 3 artillery guns (including 2 howitzers 100mm).

Of course not entire Group "Żółkiew" took part in combats near Zboiska - only some elements. Most of it was concentrated near the town Żółkiew, north of Lwów. Other parts were carrying out security and sentry tasks in nearby areas. But artillery of Group "Żółkiew" was mostly supporting Polish forces fighting near Lwow.

Also not all forces of 10 BK were involved in the battle of Lwow.

Covering Lwow by the 10th Motorized Brigade started yet on September 12 with delaying actions against the 4th Light Division along the line Jaworow - Janow - Lwow. After combats near Krakowiec, Jaworow and Niemirow the brigade received an order to leave a battle group in Janowskie Forests and to march to Zolkiew with main forces to cover Lwow from the north. The nightly march of the brigade (September 12 - September 13) was one of the hardest in September of 1939, overtired drivers were falling asleep, there were problems with motorized columns, jammings were appearing here and there. Some damages of motor vehicles occured, but it was the 13th day for those soldiers almost without sleep, after nightly marches without lights and heavy combats during daytimes.

Commander of the brigade Col. Maczek established phone call with Lwow from the post office in Janow and received an order to report himself to the Command of Corps District No. VI (which was located in Lwow). In Lwow Col. Maczek was familiarized by Gen. Langner with current situation and with his task of covering the city from the north and from the north-west and in the future also cooperating with divisions which are currently in the area of Przemysl (11 DP, 24 DP and 38 DPRez.) after they break through to the area of Lwow.

After the briefing in Lwow, during his return to Żołkiew, Col. Maczek decided to arrange his brigade, give his units some rest time and adopt a grouping, that would allow him to cover Lwow and simultaneously maintain the ability of limited offensive actions in the north against the 4th Light Division with use of mounted squadrons and artillery of Group "Żółkiew".

The battle group that was left in Janow (Janowskie Forests) consisted of 10th horse rifle rgt. (mot.) strengthened by one AT platoon under command of Mjr. Emil Słatyński. Another group of the brigade, composed of 2nd squadron of 24th uhlan rgt. (mot.) under Lt. Władysław Rakowski reinforced by one HMG platoon, one AT platoon and one reconnaissance patrol of motorcyclists was left in Dobrosin to secure Brigade's flank from the direction of Rawa Ruska. Finally the 4th squadron of 24th uhlan rgt. (mot.) under Cav.Cpt. (Rtm.) Wiktor Zarembinski strengthened by one HMG platoon, one AT gun and one patrol of motorcyclists was left in Krechów.

Security groups left in Dobrosin and Krechow conducted some limited but efficient actions against German forces and prepared some ambushes. On September 13 2nd squaron of 24th uhlan rgt. (mot.) destroyed a German radio station car and captured four men of its crew, destroyed 2 motorcycles and one truck with sapper equipment and 9 soldiers. Captured prisoners were delivered to 10th Brigade's HQ in Soposzyn near Zolkiew and interrogated.

Later these security groups from 10 BK were replaced by new security groups from Group "Żółkiew", while forces of 10 BK - which were certainly more valuable than those of Group "Żółkiew" - were given new tasks.

BTW:
Przemysl was captured on 14 IX and 1. Geb.Div. had nothing to do with it (the four days long battle of Przemysl - 11 to 14 IX - was conducted on the German side by 7. Inf.Div. and elements of 44. and 45. Inf.Div.).
It seems there is a real scarcity of information on the battle of Przemysl in German sources.

Here is a decent article about the battle in Polish:

Germans had to withdraw from Przemysl in late September (half of the city was given to the Soviets).

Polish eye-witness described:

"... On that day (23 September) I noticed, that German units started to withdraw, plundering everything what they could. And they were withdrawing so throughout a whole five days. (...) On 27 September Germans started to burn Jewish synagogues. (...) Fortunately it started to heavily rain and partially extinguished the fires."

Hello to all :D; after a while, here goes what I can gather about the 2 Gebirgsdivision in 1939...............

The 2 Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

The 2 GD (Innsbruck) was commanded by Generalleutnant Valentin Feurstein (Ia Oberstleutnant Degen), it was organized on the basis of the 6 Austrian Infantry Division and comprised two regiments of mountain hunters: the GJR 136 of Tyrol (Oberst Nake) and the GJR 137 (Oberst Schlemmer), a mountain artillery regiment: the GAR 111, plus the AA 111; the Geb Pi Btl 82, the NA 67 and the Pz Jag Abt 47.

For this campaign the division was subordinated to the XVIII Geb AK (General der Infanterie Eugen Bayer) within the 14 AOK (Generaloberst Wilhelm List). The 2 GD was ordered to cross the international boundary near Biala Spiska, in the Beskids, in the valley of the Dunajec and then was to follow the shortest route to Lemberg / Lwow.

The 2 Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Deployment in Slovakia.

The I./ GJR 137 was commanded by Oberstleutnant Huch; among other officers were part of the battalion Lt. Seiler, Hptm. Frank, Hptm. Fuschelberger, Hptm. Hofbauer and Hptm. Stute. Within the 4. Company were Hptm. Hofbauer and Lt. Neuschier. In the early days of August 1939 the regiment was shipped by train to Pressburg/Bratislava for maneuvers. We developed field exercises in the Training ground of Torezci. Then came hard times and we should increase the security measures against terrorist acts by the Czechs.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2. GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

8 Sep 1939.

The three ON battalions "Nowy Sacz", "Gorlice" and "Sambor" in the rear of the Polish 2nd Mountain Brigade which were retreating towards Krościenko Wyżne, fought during the morning at Jasło against the GJR 136 commanded by Oberst Albin Nake. All German attacks were repulsed. Strong German artillery fire caused heavy losses to the second battalion, 1 pp KOP "Carpathian", which lost half of the officers.

By noon the regiment was ordered to stop fighting and withdraw in the direction of Krosno. However, breaking contact of the enemy during the day was not easy, the regiment suffered more significant losses due to enemy artillery fire. In the afternoon, the regiment reached Świerzowa Polska and Suchodół and began preparing defensive positions there.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

10 Sep 1939.

The GJR 137 marched through the recent battlefields, seeing the corpses of Polish soldiers still lying on the ground. In Krosno they could see bomb craters and downed planes and then the march proceeded into the open till reach the San; it was ordered a stop at Uluc.

The troops of the 2. GD marched south, reaching the San in Jablonica Ruska and further south in Uluc. The attack was successful and the gebirgsjägern forced the crossing over San. The II. / GJR 137 (Oberstleutnant Sorko) established a bridgehead, the III. / GJR 137 ( Oberstleutnant Matthias Kräutler) blocked the intersection of roads located about 4 km of the river, while the GJR 136 controlled the hill south of Jawornik Ruski.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 12.

The 24 PD fought with the 2 GD in the area of Bircza, where the two battalions of the 2nd Mountain Brigade and the artillery of the unit played a key role. The German mountain hunters attacked the rear units of the 24 DP, which caused difficulties in the supply.

Nevertheless the Polish could not stop the opponent on the river San, which was crossed already on September 09, 1939 by the Kampfgruppe "Geiger" by Sanok, the next day (September 10) by the 4th Light Division in Radymno and the 2. GD by Ulucz.

Hello to all :D; more follows...............

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 14.

On September 14, 1939 very worn out by the fighting and marches, the 24 DP occupied an assembly area around: Tyszkowice, Boratycze, Chodorowice and Popowice, being attacked there by the 2 GD. A strong attack was rejected at Boratycze by the 155 res. pp and the I. Battalion of the 39 pp.(Infantry Regiment - pulk piechoty).

The German mountain's infantry was halted and the vanguard, composed of the III. / GJR 137 and the Regimental HQ were cut from the rest of the division. The vanguard, without adequate intelligence, entered the wooded area and soon the situation became critical, at risk of being destroyed after it was ambushed by Polish marksmen deployed in the tops of the trees.
