Hello to all :D; more follows...............

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 14.

The 2. / GJR 137 which preceded in the march to the 4. / GJR 137 was ambushed by scattered Polish riflemen who were retreating and suffered the first casualties, Hauptmann Frank and 3 other hunters were killed in combat. There were also casualties by sickness (dysentery), some of whom perished, while others were evacuated to hospital with serious foot injuries. The march continued for Rudki and Komarno.

Only the timely arrival of the II. / GJR 137 and the I / GJR 136 (Oberstleutnant v. Stettner) has helped control the situation. It was the day the 2 GD suffered the most casualties in the whole campaign of September 1939. At 21:00 hours the Polish division interrupted the fight and retreated to the woods near the railway station at Chrosnika.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 15.

The status of the 1 GD, well ahead in relation to the main force of the 14 German Army, was very difficult. its only line of communication from Sambor to Chyrow was at stake. The nearest unit, the 2 GD, only left the area around Husakowa, making forced marches by Rudki, Lubień, and had to travel about 90 km, equivalent to 2-3 days of marching along rough roads. The XXII AK (Mot) of General E. von Kleist, seeking the conquest of Rawa Ruska, marched north and northeast: the 4 Le Div on Vladimir Volhynia, and 2 Pz to Zamosc.

The XVII AK fought by Oleszycami against the Polish 21 Infantry Division. General Kübler seeing that their units were scattered and significantly decreased the strength to stop the push of the Polish by Gródkiem Jagiellońskim organized battle groups "Zimmer", "Utz" and "Kress". Thus, the forces of the 1 GD fighting against Lviv were reduced to 5 battalions and four batteries of heavy artillery on the perimeter of 25 km around the city, with only a reserve battalion in Zimnej Wodzie.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

September 19, 1939.

The Germans had not seized Lemberg/Lwow yet. Disputes between Germans and Russians for the possession of the city led to clashes between the two aggressors armies (?). Before noon on September 19, 1939 the hunters of the GJR 137 belonging to the 2 GD marched to Winnik, a town that already had been occupied by the Soviets and collided with units of the Red Army (?). (As told by Wojciech Wlodarkiewicz)

On both sides, west and east, the Polish defenders fought doggedly with reconnaissance patrols of both invaders, who were seeking information in preparation for a new offensive. The next German assault on Lemberg/Lwow would begin at 11:00 hours on September 21, 1939; the 7. ID would attack from the north, the 1. GD from the south and parts of it from the west finally the 2. GD from the southeast.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

The XVIII Geb AK under General Beyer was preparing to launch the final assault on the city with three divisions. Previously, the Army Corps Commander would require the surrender to General Langner on September 21, 1939 at 10:00 hours with the threat that if the city continued its resistance would be destroyed.

On September 20, 1939 the press in the city of Lwow issued some news about the withdrawal of Soviet formations of the boundaries of the city in order to deploy the troops against the Germans. All that day the representatives of the Red Army and the Wehrmacht contacted constantly each other.

Hello to all :D; more follows...............

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

In Winniki was held a meeting between the Commander of the German 2. GD, General Feuerstein and the Chief of Artillery of the Ukrainian Front, N. D. Yakovlev. The Germans looked that the Soviet Army did not interfere with the planned attack on September 21 1939, while the Soviets wanted the Germans to cease the bombing of the city and retire to a distance of 12-15 kilometers west of Lemberg/Lwow, both requirements were incompatible.

The Commanding General of the 14 AOK, General List was not sure about continuing with the assault on the city, having received reports on the approximation of strong contingents of Polish troops from the north. At 20:00 hours the commander of the XVIII Geb. AK, following received orders decided to lift the siege of Lwow and then march westwards during the night of 20 to 21 September, 1939.

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

At 21:30 hours the Commander of the 1 GD, General Kübler ordered the cancellation of the attack and take defensive positions. Shortly after midnight, he ordered the hand over of the positions to the Red Army and then begin the march toward Janow. On September 21, 1939 between 05:00 and 11:00 hours the German mountain troops crossed the positions of the 7 ID. Likewise also began the withdrawal of the 2 GD.

According to previous diplomatic agreements it was outlined a new demarcation line in Poland and the Germans retired peacefully behind the river San. In Ostrow, sector of Przemysl, we cover guard along the banks of the San and again we were faced with Russian troops. The Soviets shot people displaced so we assume the custody thereof. During the time we were in Ostrow had occasion to visit the old fortified positions of the WWI.

Hello to all :D; last part...............

The 2. Gebirgsdivision (2 GD) in Poland - 1939.

Case White - Polish campaign in September 1939.

In mid-October, 1939 again we received the marching order. During the night the units began a silent march. Our goal the city of Krakow. Once there we were loaded onto railroad cars and wondered where we will march to this time. We followed carefully the stations during the travel... Prague, Karlsbad, Nuremberg. The journey continued west on Frankfurt and Koblenz, and finally we went down in Kochern a/ Mosel and that very day we continue towards Mesenich where we got accommodation among the population.
