Pio-Btl.600

Post by MICHAELM82 » 21 Apr 2002 07:41

Hi,
Just wondering if this unit (commanding officer?) was part of Aufklurungsgruppe Olboeter during August 3-8?
If so what were the actions of the Pio-Btl 600 for that date?
Thanks for any info!!
Mike

Pioniere Battailon 600 in Normandy june 1944

This unit had recently been formed in Bitsch in Lorraine.(1) Probably it had been raised on an ad hoc basis.

On 24 June it was decided that the unit should be comitted in the area around Condé-sur-Noireau.(2) It was reported on 13 July that the battalion had arrived.(3) One day later the unit was near Canteloup, about 15 km east of Caen.(4)

The battalion (minus one company) was subordinated to 74. Korps on 11 August.(5)

No further information about the unit has been found.

PanzerM

Is this unit the same as Heeres-Pionier-Btl. (mot) z.b.V 600 (Taifun), which was raised in July 1944 and later fought under 5th Panzer Armee in the Ardennes?

Heeres Pionier Batallion 600 and KG Olboeter

Post by Mark V. » 23 Apr 2002 18:04

Hi Michael

I've managed to dig up a few facts about Heeres Pionier Batallion 600 and KG Olboeter from Fürbringer and Benamou.
H.Pi.Btl. 600 was moved to the Vire sector as a reinforcement for the units already deployed there to repel the Operation Bluecoat. The commander of the battalion (Ohlenröter*) along with Stubaf. Olboeter were in the evening hours of 2nd August ordered to report to the CP of the II.SS Pz.Korps. They were ordered to establish a blocking position on the line Vire – La Graverie.
It seems that the H.Pi.Btl. 600 were the first one to arrive and occupy a defensive line on the northern outskirts of Vire. In the evening hours of 3rd August the first elements of Hohenstaufen were able to establish a contact with the battalion in Vire. At this time the battalion was either placed under the command of KG Weiss (Stubaf. Hans Weiss) or under the direct command of the II.SS Pz.Korps.
KG Weiss – sSSpzabt. 102, parts of AA9 (Gräbner), Divisionsbegleitkompanie 9 and temporarily 7./Pz.Rgt. 9. KG occupied defensive positions on the hills north of Vire. The main part of armoured elements of Hohenstaufen was formed into KG Meyer (Ostubaf. Otto Meyer) with orders to attack eastern part of the breakthrough and reoccupy Le Beny-Boccage.
The batallion apparently continued to hold its position since there is no mention of this unit in the heavy battles North of Vire.
On 4th August Hohenstaufen was able to establish weak defensive line, the main reason for concern were however cutt off elements of Guards Armoured, 11th Armoured and 15th Scottish division which advanced further to the south and were thretening an important Vire – Vassy road. When KG Olboeter arrived in the evening it was ordered to occupy defensive positions on that road and to prevent breakthrough to south and west.
Subsequently the British forces were surrounded and a pocket was formed. Because of its size these units still represented a big threat and so further forces were sent to destroy the pocket – Frundsberg and 116.Panzer division.
On 6th a major attack was launched againts the pocket**. The H.Pi.Btl. 600 apparently took part in it, but I am not so sure about KG Olboeter. It appears that KG was still blocking the British to the south.
On 7th further attacks were scheduled but were cancelled because the Frundsberg and 116.Pz.division had been withdrawn. H.Pi.Btl. 600 provided infantry support for sSSpzabt. 102 in area of Chenedolle, where Fey (1./ sSSpzabt. 102) managed to destroy 15 tanks. On this day the battalion destroyed one tank and KG Olboeter six.
On 8th both units were withdrawn, KG Olboeter to I.SS Pz.Korps and H.Pi.Btl. 600 in a reserve position south of Vassy.

*Fürbringer – names CO but not his rang
**Benamou – states that the attack was launched at 19:00hrs on the 6th August by 60 panzers of 116th Pz.Div. and the 10th SS Pz.Div. with Tank Destroyers (probably StuGs), Tigers of the
102nd SS Heavy Tank Battalion and an Engineer battalion utilized as infantry.
