Welcome to the forum Greyfinn.

Here is some more info about this battle. The 38. Korps, 16. Armee and was to the north of Novgorod where it occupied positions on the southern side of the Volkhov salient, which had been come into being as a result of the Soviet offensive in January 1942. Fierce fighting took place throughout the next couple of months as the Soviets sought to expand their corridor into the pocket and the Germans attempted to close it. On 22nd May 1942 the Germans launched a two-pronged pincer attack which was designed to cut the corridor into the pocket. Schlepper's division attacked from the south with the rest of 38. Korps. By the 30th May the two German pincers had met, trapping the Soviet 2nd Shock Army.

For the next month the fighting continued as the Germans broke the pocket up, eliminating the Soviets units piecemeal. This was a difficult job, due to the primeval swamps and forests, which make up the terrain in this area, and the fighting was particularly savage. Finally, by the end of June, the pocket was cleared and the former frontline restored with the exception of a bridgehead over the Volkhov at Mostki. It was opposite this that 126. Infanteriedivision took up positions.

Greyfinn,

The truth is that I had another avatar before and when I saw your avatar I really like it so I decided to change it so forgive me. About your question about Tilsit, I will have to make some research about it.

The SS-Freiwilligen-Legion "Flandern" fought also on the Wolchowfront. They took part in the battle from January till June 1942. The 20th Infantry Division also took part in the battle as did the 21th. I am making myself a list of the units which took part in the battle.

I am researching the battle for the Volhov, any information is welcome.

Friendly Regards
