Thank you 'Germanicus' for selflessly sharing this information on the forum. It seems to have been a massive undertaking and no doubt will be of benefit to those interested in the subject.

Dear Seaburn...

I do believe that information not shared is and will be lost... I appreciate your kind words and it is still and has been a massive undertaking... One book alludes me and that is Tessin's Volume 17, which has extensive Volkssturm information. I have not been able to import this book into Australia for some odd reason and it has information I would dearly love to receive.

Your words are most welcomed.

I just came across an amazing find... this was achieved via Google Book Search. I am in the process of adding an extensive amount of new units located during my recent searching exercise. This will include detailed referencing links.

Also after so many years of trying to import Band 17: Register der Namensverbände: Volkssturm, Hitlerjugend, Verbündete by Georg Tessin, I have finally been able to contact a supplier in Germany, Helmut Weitze Militärische Antiquitäten und Antiquariat Neuer Wall 18 D-20354 Hamburg

As promised these are further finds of late. There was a lot of research in locating these units. As the units were usually just noted with Bataillon numbers and then after reading and researching their location, what town they were from. I was able to formulate their Gau number, as they would have related to 1945. For example the following unit, Volkssturm-Bataillon 9/190, was listed as Volkssturm-Bataillon 190 Eppendorf. This corresponded to Gau 9 Hamburg.

Dear All...

'Georg Tessin, : Verbände und Truppen der deutschen Wehrmacht und Waffen-SS im Zweiten Weltkrieg 1939-1945 / Register der Namensverbände; Volkssturm; Hitlerjugend; Verbündete. : Band 17' has arrived and it is in pristine condition. It is very different to the other books in the collection and It appears, on first glance, that there will be an extensive list of additional units to add. As was stated before in an earlier post about this book, it is based on the Deutsches Rotes Kreuz Vermisstenbildliste. Book VA, VB and VC.

However, this volume by Tessin appears to be even more extensive than DRK Books and there is far more Volkssturm units listed. Volume 17 consists of 482 pages. The Volkssturm units are located in different sections of the book. The most thorough section is found between page 293 and 344, with 80 Volssturm units listed on each page. There are also Hitler-Jugend units to be added from this Volume of Tessin.

For those interested and if any are still following this post, there will be additional Volkssturm Units, I have also compiled, separate to those found within Tessin still to come.

Most respectfully

Mark

More Historical points whilst I compile additional listings to add as stated above.
1024px-Volkssturm_armband.svg.png
The Leader Decree on the future formation of the Volkssturm was published on 25th September 1944. It was announced that all men aged 16 to 60 years old who are not serving in the armed forces and can serve in the army, will be called upon to serve in the Volkssturm, and would involve in all of Germany.

The formation of the German Volkssturm was on 18 October, the 131st anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig , made public and officially announced two days later.

At the end of October 1944 party officials recorded all males aged 16 to 60 years, recorded the names, addresses, occupation and other information.

On Sunday, November 12, 1944 mass gatherings of men were conducted which signalled the mobilisation of the Volkssturm. This event was held all over Germany. Participants swore the Volkssturm oath to Hitler personally.

The text of the Volkssturm Oath:

"I give to God this sacred oath that will unquestioningly loyal and obedient to the Great German Empire, Adolf Hitler. I solemnly promise that I will bravely fight for their homeland and would rather die than do unto liberty, thereby leaving in the lurch social future of my people. "

From Hitler's decree on the establishment of the Volkssturm:

"After 5 years of fierce fighting in some very close to the German border fronts, the enemy keeps attacking due to the defection of our European allies. The enemy has taken action to crush our empire, to destroy the German people and their social order; its ultimate objective is the extermination of the German race.

As in the fall of 1939, we are facing our enemies alone. In recent years we have succeeded in solving the most complex military problems since the first large-scale operation made by the brave German people. Once again, our strong will, continuity of the Empire and therefore Europe is assured.

But as our enemies think they can give us the final blow, we decided to use the power of our people again. It must and will succeed, as in the years 1939 to 41 and defeat the enemy and cast our Empire forever, for the future of Germany and its allies and with them Europe, ensure and guarantee peace forever. The intentions of our enemy, international Jewry, to annihilate, will be swept away by the will of the German people.

To strengthen the power of our military and especially the leadership in the tireless struggle everywhere, there where our enemies want to set foot on German soil, demanded going to fight all men capable of handling a gun. Therefore I command you:
1. Loyalty, obedience and courage are the basis of the state and make it invincible. True to his oath, Volkssturm soldiers fighting fiercely in all positions, with faith in victory. Faithful until death to the Führer, he prefers better to die in battle than ever ask for mercy of the enemy.

2. Being unbeatable in its persistence, dedication and partnership, Volkssturm is an army of the greatest idealists Germany.

3. If any commander in a hopeless position will conceive to stop the fight, in this case in the German Volkssturm operates traditional custom of our brave soldiers, sailors. Part of the command is sent to the person who wants to keep fighting - even if it's the youngest.

4. Being bred to preserve the secrecy of soldiers Volkssturm most despised betrayal of his country and his comrades. His reticence can not break any temptation or threats.

5. Treating chivalrous to women, warning the children, the sick and the elderly, soldiers Volkssturm of love for the people of country is ready for the extreme sacrifice. In relation to the enemy that threatens the freedom and life and wants to dishonor our wives and children to kill, he nurtures a passionate hatred.

6. If we are following the example of our fathers remain true to ourselves and our supreme duty to the people, the Lord God bless our struggle. Designed in the most difficult time to defend the homeland, we will not rest until until you have won the victory and peace and strengthen freedom of the empire."

As for the Volkssturm's weapons, here is some information from David K. Yelton, Hitler's Volkssturm: The Nazi Militia and the Fall of Germany, 1944-1945 (Kansas, 2002), pp. 108-09, 113, 140:

"The Wehrmacht ... could not meet the Volkssturm's estimated minimal logistical needs of 4 million rifles, 250,000 machine guns, and 25,000 mortars. In October 1944 the Wehrmacht itself was short more than 714,000 rifles, 85,000 machine guns, and 2,900 mortars, and was rearming even regular infantry divisions with captured firearms and artillery. With production of the standard German infantry carbine fixed at approximately 186,000 monthly, Speer admitted that supply was not possible."

"German weapons were preferable but simply unavailable, so Volkssturm units often received what remained of stocks of foreign--often Italian-- arms seized earlier in the war. ... officials considered providing Volkssturm men with a motley array of firearms, particularly nonmilitary weapons like shotguns, detrimental to the Volkssturm's legal combatant status."

"Some Volkssturm officials had surplus Luftwaffe airplane machine guns converted for ground use, while others had spare flare pistols reworked to fire small grenades...Molotov cocktails ... The most ambitious of these [weapon] programs involved the so-called People's Rifles (Volksgewehre), simplified versions of standard firearms .. Eventually the program grew to include five authorized rifle models, a carbine, a pistol, and automatic rifle, and a submachine gun. ... the VG1-5, proving quite effective. ... The Panzerfaust, which one Gaustabsfuhrer even called the 'main weapon of the Volkssturm man,' proved the only weapon that the force consistently possessed in adequate numbers."

"A Cologne battalion had only a handful of Danish and Italian rifles until it received a shipment of Panzerfauste, ...the vast majority lacked proper training, weapons, uniforms, and equipment."

"the usually eclectic mix of German, Italian, Czech, Austrian, and French weapons. ..."

Volkssturm-Bataillon near Cologne in 1945.

1. company: 8 italian rifles, for 80 men.
2. company: belgian rifles without ammo, revolvers and pistols from the end of the 19th century.
3. company: danish rifles with 6 - 9 rounds for each rifle.
4. company: french M 1886 carbines and italian rifles without ammo.

After further research please remove the following units, as they were misunderstood by myself and I apologise for this oversight. I will fix this when I do a major update, once I have compiled the units from Tessin's collection. None of the units below existed. The 13/339 to 13/425 are Volume and book pages from Tessin. Now that I have this book, it explains exactly what was meant by him. The misunderstanding came when I was searching 'Organisationsgeschichte der Deutschen Wehrmacht 1939-1945' CD. The Welch is from an earlier post sent to me and I have further researched and can find no such location.
