Overall, it was found that per kilometer Empire protective position about 30-35 men were employed. A crew that had to be virtually wiped out by any Soviet attack immediately. The great hope was the returning units of the front line troops that should be sent from the now the position related crews. In addition to this extremely weak occupation of Ostwalles Burgenland Volkssturm units were often ordered only in parts in the individual sections of the Reich protective position. In particular, this Volkssturm units broke away already at the first signs of a rapprochement of Russians immediately from the Reich or the protection settings directly located at these places. Exceptions were eg Horitschon (section Niederdonau), and Holy Cross and Rechnitz where there were bloody battles.

Following a visit of the Commander of the Panzerjagdverbande (Tank-Hunting Detachment) of Army Group Vistula, Oberst Ernst-Wilhelm Freiherr Gedult Von Jungenfeld, all of the Panzerjagdverbande were to be centralized under Strachwitz' Command. In April the Panzerjagdeinheiten (Tank-Hunting Units) of Army Group Centre Were all put under his Command, This included Panzerjagdverbande A, B And C (Wehrkreis VIII), The Heeres-Panzerjagdbrigaden 1 And 3, Two Volkssturm-Panzerjagdbrigaden and the Panzerjager-Brigade Niederschlesien (Lower Silesia) And Free Ukrainians. Strachwitz deployed his Men in Small Combat Groups, sometimes operating behind enemy lines, which lured enemy tanks into traps and attacked them with Panzerfausts. Combat reached its peak in April 1945, and some of his men were credited with more than ten enemy tanks destroyed each. The German front line of Army Group Centre at the time was in Mid-Silesia along the Zobten, and via Schweidnitz and Jauer to Lauban. The main Soviet thrust was targeted for Berlin and Dresden, threatening the German troops in Silesia with encirclement. Strachwitz and his men fought until the German capitulation on 8 May 1945.

Standschützen-Bataillone

The order to raise the Standschützen-Bataillone came from OKW on August 23, 1944 and was directed to the Oberste Kommissar der Operation-zone "Alpenvorland" und Gauleiter von Tirol-Vorarlberg Franz Hofer. It was basically an order to raise local Volkssturm units in the area and OKW was to be responsible for the weaponry, equipment and training of these units, training led by experienced officers like Major Karl-Walter Lapp, a veteran Gebirgsjäger/Skijäger officer decorated with the Knight's Cross. All in all, Standschützen-Bataillone where raised and had their garrison in different districts as follows:

Nordtirol, Südtirol, Vorarlberg and Osttirol

From David K. Yelton's well-researched Hitler's Volkssturm: the Nazi Militia and the Fall of Germany, 1944-1945 (University of Kansas Press, 2002), pages 125-127:

Wehrmacht reliance on the Volkssturm as substitute infantry increased still further after the massive Soviet offensive against the Oder-Neisse position began on April 10. Volkssturm units here often fought bravely and inflicted heavy losses on the Soviet attackers, but they could not hold due to the Germans' lack of reserves. Intent on keeping the Soviets as far east as possible, Hitler authorized sending Berlin Volkssturm battalions and some 6,000 boys in HJ antitank teams as reinforcements to defend the Seelow Heights and other positions behind the Oder. Although fierce fighting here generated heavy casualties for both sides, these improvisations only delayed but could not halt the Soviets. Furthermore, much like their special purpose battalion comrades at Zielenzig, many hastily dispatched Volkssturm units were dispersed by air attacks (against which they had no protection) or quickly overrun before they reached their assigned positions.

The decision to fight at the Oder also upset Berlin's defense preparations to some extent. The Berlin Volkssturm not only lost a substantial proportion of its better-equipped battalions, but Hitler also required it to turn over weapons to help arm thirty battalions of Luftwaffe and naval personnel. In spite of these reductions, Volkssturm units still constituted about half of Berlin's defense force; but what remained were generally poorly trained and ill equipped. In fact, one officer reported his zone's Volkssturm units had fifteen different rifle and ten different machine gun models.

On the positive side, however, army-Volkssturm relations in Berlin had been largely cordial since defense preparations commenced in late January. Since then, Party-army efforts had improved fortification construction efforts, logistical arrangements, and Volkssturm unit and leader training -- particularly in antitank and street-fighting tactics. As in Breslau, the Party and army had reorganized units to create battleworthy formations, scrutinized unit leader appointees for competence, replaced those found lacking with able former officers, and attempted to assign men to familiar geographic areas. Some units also received a stiffening of police to increase their combat potential. Wehrkreis officials even sought to ensure that rear-echelon soldiers treated Volkssturm men respectfully. These efforts led Berlin's military commanders to report on April 15 that the Volkssturm was willing and somewhat able to fight.

Several Volkssturm battalions did indeed contribute to the city's bitter, if futile, defense by holding the Teltow Canal, protecting quiet sectors, ambushing Soviet reconnaissance patrols, and in street fighting. As always, however, Volkssturm units were brittle and poorly supplied, frequently reduced to procuring essential items by scavenging the battlefield, looting warehouses, or begging from sympathetic civilians. Many Volkssturm men recognized the futility of the struggle and either never reported for duty or threw away their armbands, paybooks, and equipment (if indeed they had any) and went home when they tired of fighting or ran out of ammunition or other necessary supplies.

Hitler Youth military exploits in Berlin -- and indeed throughout Germany -- have been highly publicized, overshadowing the fact that they were only a fraction of the capital's substantial Volkssturm contingent. The fanatic HJ defense of the Pickelsdorfer bridges over the Havel did delay Soviet encirclement of the city for two days and was on e of the most important Volkssturm successes in Berlin. HJ forces also fought, primarily as antitank teams, in other areas of Berlin and in the defenses west of the Oder ...

Although making fine use of German archival materials and sources, Yelton's book leans more toward study of the Volkssturm in motivational, political, administrative, leadership, and statistical matters. While he does not list order of battle, his statistical detail reports 2,691 Volkssturm men of Berlin Gau missing in action.

Hitler's decree on the formation of the German Volkssturm from 09/25/1944

September 1944

Der Führer: Adolf Hitler
Der Leiter der Parteikanzlei: M. Bormann
Der Chef des Oberkommandos der Wehrmacht: Keitel
Der Reichsminister und Chef der Reichskanzlei: Dr. Lammers

Hitler's decree on the formation of the German Volkssturm from 09/25/1944

After five years of severe struggle is due to the failure of all our European allies of the enemy on some fronts near or at the German borders. He strained his forces to crush our empire to destroy the German people and its social order. His ultimate goal is the extermination of the German people.

As in the autumn of 1939 we are now again against blowing in the front of our enemies. In a few years we were then succeeded by the first large-scale operation of our German people power to solve the most important military problems to ensure the survival of the empire and thus for Europe for years. While now believes the opponents to be able to go back to the last beat, we are determined to carry out the second large-scale operation of our people. It must and we will succeed as relying in the years 1939 to 1941 solely on our own strength, not only to break the will to destroy the enemies, but to throw back him again and long hold of the kingdom until the future of Germany, its allies, and so Europe securing peace is guaranteed.
The we know total destruction will our Jewish-international enemy we set the total commitment of all German people opposed.

to strengthen the active forces of our armed forces and in particular to keep a relentless struggle wherever the enemy German soil wants to enter, I therefore call on all able-bodied German men for combat.

I dictate:.

1 It is to make the German people storm in the clans of the Greater German Reich from all able-bodied men aged 16 to 60 years. He will defend the homeland with all the weapons and products, where they appear suitable..

2 The establishment and maintenance of the German Volkssturm assume in their districts the Gauleiters. They use primarily the ablest organizers and leaders of proven institutions of the party, SA, SS, NSKK and HJ..

3 I appoint the Chief of Staff of the SA, Schepmann, the inspector for the shooting training and the corps commander of the NSKK, Kraus, the inspector for Motortechnische Ausbldung the
Volkssturm..

4 The members of the German Volkssturm are while deployed soldiers in the sense of military law..

5 The affiliation of the members of the Volkssturm to non-occupational organizations remains unaffected. But the service in the German Volkssturm is going on every service in other
organizations..

6 The Reichsfuhrer SS is in command of the Reserve Army in charge of the military organizations, training, arming and equipping of the German
Volkssturm..

7 The combat mission of the German Volkssturm done according to my instructions by the Reichsführer SS as commander of the Reserve Army..

8 The military implementation regulations adopt as the commander of the reserve army of the Reich SS Himmler, the political and organizational under my authority Reichsleiter
Bormann..

9 The National Socialist Party met in front of the German people their highest duty of honor, their organizations by setting up as the main carrier of this struggle in the first place.
Guide Headquarters, September 25, 1944

HITLER: Adolf Hitler,

the leader of the Party Chancellery: M. Bormann

The Chief of the Supreme Command of the Wehrmacht: Keitel

The Reich Minister and Chief of the Reich Chancellery: Dr. Lammers

zit. by: National Socialism. Documents 1933-1945, edited and annotated by Walther Hofer, Frankfurt / Main1957, 252 f.

The formation of the German Volkssturm was made public on 18 October 1944 the anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig and officially announced two days later. This enabled first Volkssturm associations are demonstrated effective propaganda that had been placed on a so-called leaders Decree of September 25, 1944 back.

Recruiting provided six million Volkssturm men was under the responsibility of the Chief of the NSDAP Party Chancellery, Martin Bormann. While under the military command of Heinrich Himmler Volkssturm was mainly for construction - and dig trenches, backup tasks and to defend villages - mostly in the immediate home area - provided. The members of the Volkssturm did not wear uniforms of the army, but an armband with the inscription, German Volkssturm - Wehrmacht '.

After the German population statistics about six million men would have been Volkssturm subject, but very many were not used, namely when it 'war weights work' verricheten, economic interests were to the effect before. Sworn in on Adolf Hitler and propaganda revalued as crucial reserve against the advancing Allies, attracted mostly young Hitler boys and older men hastily armed and poorly trained in an unequal struggle against a superior enemy. The functionality of their rifles and machine guns they had mostly only in crash courses to learn. The standard weapons included the bazooka: She was easy to use, had a high impact and was due to the low weight also of women and young people easy to carry. Propaganda formulas such as the supposedly highly successful use of, wonder weapons', but also targeted false reports of ostensibly newly available troops of the Wehrmacht could not disguise the futility of fighting and the imminent German defeat in World War II.

The military value of the poorly equipped Volkssturm associations was therefore low. In contact with the enemy, some units disbanded or surrendered. Often enough, however, they fought particularly in the east with the courage of despair. Years of hate campaign against the Bolshevik subhuman 'and the terrible ravages of the German occupying forces in the East fueled a panic fear of the vengeance of the Red Army. So defending 15,000 members of the Volkssturm with scattered Wehrmacht units doggedly entrapped by the Red Army Breslau (now Wroclaw, Poland) for months to May 1945. Total had to pay the Volkssturm during operations with tens of thousands killed a high death toll.

An unnamed student reports: "In late 1944, the students of the class of 1929, the secondary schools have been retrieved from the Kinderlandverschickung to Hamburg as a last resort the." To bring Millennial Reign "the final victory closer After short pre-military exercises in the local barracks , it was the beginning of 1945 with the Reichsbahn after Weddewarden on the Weser for military training. In April, we arrived by Hochbahn buses to Jenfeld to Holstenhof where our Belgian uniforms were replaced with Feldgrau. From there it went to the double-decker commuter train in front to the front . the gates of Hamburg In seven days we were eight times roost or position changes, to May 1, in the restaurant "Castle corner" on Karnapp / corner Hamburger Schloßstraße, on the railway line Hamburg - to land Cuxhaven, where we Englishmen the sprinkled with grenade launchers. On May 2, it was rumored that Hamburg should be surrendered without a fight, which was then confirmed by an extra edition of the newspaper Hamburger. Our officers and instructors we saw from that point on no more again, because it was said that we should continue to fight in the east against the Russians, and so they had civilian clothes "concerned" and had gone into hiding. We 15 year old student soldiers but were left to ourselves. We did not have identity cards and only our field-gray Wehrmacht uniforms in the body. I was in our abandoned piles of single hamburger with local knowledge and had learned that the last suburban train would go by 23 clock toward Hamburg, after the Elbbrücken should be blocked or broken. We made us after dark on the way to Hamburg Central Station, we also, "heavily armed" with sharp hand grenades in the uniform pockets before 23 clock arrived unmolested. With all good wishes I left there from the other, because I still had a perilous walk in front of me. This led to the infamous Gestapo-past guard. I reached unharmed my parents 'house.

"Whether adolescents or older men, none of them were military prepared to effectively', within the meaning of the Nazi regime to intervene in the fighting, especially since they were particularly ill-equipped. Weapons were few available, ammunition was in short supply. Since everyone could not be plugged into a uniform, because this had become a scarce commodity, there were, in addition to fantasy uniforms, armbands, which identified the men as Volkssturm members. The majority wore civilian clothes, which did not mind because the Volkssturm did not belong to part of the Wehrmacht. Completely contrary to the equipment and valor of these motley forces, was the propaganda machine of the time.

Overall, the Volkssturm had recorded substantial losses in less military action. Exact casualty figures are unknown, but is believed to be reported missing Volkssturm members, most have fallen by 175,000.

The following was posted by Warnach in HJ-Research.com

HJ in the battle of Berlin

"Hello friends,

I'm new in this great forum and started digging in.

As a student of WWII warfare I became intrigued by the battle of BERLIN in April 1945.

In the process of trying to determine which German units were engaged in the battle I came across the HJ.

Here I have to explain myself a bit. The general literature about the battle always falls back on the major (well-known) units. 11. SS-Div. Nordland, 18. PGD, Pz-Div Müncheberg, the 9. FJD and very small numbers of he 20. PGD. They belonged to the LVI Corps commanded by Gen WEIDLING.
The organization of troops in the city changed from Corps to the different sectors with their own commanders. Other units present are also wellknown: Wachbataillon LAH, Wachregiment GD, some French volunteers etc …

In the literature Volkssturm and HJ are put rather “general” in the spotlights (although,I admit, some VS-Units like the one of SIEMENSSTADT are relatively well documented)

For the HJ-Banns of Berlin it is even more difficult to find any documentation.

With this thread I would like to compile a literature list of books/articles were the BERLIN HJ-Banns are mentioned with their designation/name and actions in april/mai1945. The purpose is to lift these Banns out of anonymity (in relation to the battle of Berlin) and to give students of history a tool to dig into this dark era.

If I’mcorrect (I’m a novice in the field of HJ) the Berlin HJ-Banns were:

6. Wedding – Reinickendorf
21. Horst Wessel - Prenzlauer Berg
37. Wilmersdorf - Zehlendorf
61. Neukölln – Treptow
129. Lichtenberg – Köpenick
155. Kreuzberg – Stadtmitte
198. Charlottenburg – Spandau
199. Pankow – Weißensee
200. Steglitz – Tempelhof
201. Moabit– Schöneberg

So here is my small contribution ; please feelfree to throw in your info.

BANN 6 : Panzerbär, 28th of April 1945.
“… A HJ-Panzerjagdtrupp from Bann 6 destroys a tank near a bridge Hennigsdorf...”

BANN 21 : Panzerbär, 27th of April 1945.
“… a Panzerjagdkommando from Bann 21 destroys a T-34 in the Thornerstrasse…”

BANN 37 : Der Deutsche Fallschirmjäger, 1955 , Art. “Dem Chaos entgegen” by HerbertBONATH
“… In the Parätzerstrasse goes a „Trupp“ HJ;the commander of Bann 37 is amongstthem…”

BANN 129 : Panzerbär, 29th of April 1945
“… In the sectorHeerstrasse – Olympische Brücke a Kampfgruppe of Bann 129 repells Sovjet attacks launched from Bahnhof Heerstrasse..”.
German Red cross, Bd AZ page 697
“ … Bann Berlin-Köpenick (Bann 129 ?) has listed HJ WEDEL Harald as missing in Berlin …”

BANN 198 : German Red cross, Bd AZ page 698 and 740
“… HJ-Kampfgruppe Bann 198 lists 3 members as missing inBerlin …”
“… HJ-Einsatz Berlin-Spandau (Bann 198 ?) lists 3 members asmissing in Berlin…“

BANN 201 : German Red cross, Bd AZ page 699
“… Bann 201 has listed HJ DANKO Johann as missing in April 1945 inBerlin …”
HJ-Bann Lager Berlin Reichssportfeld (???) : German Red cross, Bd AZ page 709
„… This Bann (?) lists 9 members as missing inBerlin …“

Hello friends,
Could anyone shed some light on VS-Bn 3/515 ?
In The Vermisstenbildliste VA it is named 3/515 Fürstenwalde; on the document is stated 3/515 from Berlin-Stadtmitte
Thanks

Further research revealed:

As the Volkssturmmann had his address in the FIDICINSTRASSE (part of the NSDAP-Kreis V as shown below on the Berlin 1942 Phone book snapshot) I suppose it would be logical that he belonged to a BERLIN based VS-Bn. The document seems therefore legit

So the Vermisstenbildliste indication 3/515 "Fürstenwalde" is probably not correct.

Cheers,
