Re: An extensive list of Volkssturm-Bataillons?
HJ-Panzerschreckabteilungen
3. Hitler Youth (Hitler-Jugend--HJ)
All German youths between the ages of 10 and 18 belong to this organization of the Party, which is charged with their thorough pre-military training and political indoctrination. Pre-military training has been greatly expanded in the course of this war. For this purpose about 300 Wehrertuchtigungslager (military fitness camps) were installed, beginning in 1943. Participants in these training courses were subsequently incorporated into the Armed Forces and especially into the Waffen-SS, whose 12th Panzer Division bears the name "Hitler-Jugend". Graduates of the HJ become eligible for Party membership. They may either choose a career as Party functionaries (Politische Letter) or may join the SS, SA, NSKK, or NSFK.
Girls belong to a branch of the HJ known as the League of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Madel--BDM) and join the Party Women's Organization (NS-Frauenschaft) upon reaching the age of 21.
The HJ for boys is divided into the Hitler-Jugend proper (for boys from 14 to 18) and the Deutsches Jungvolk--DJ, for boys from 10 to 14. Its regional organization is based on Gebiete, which are further divided into Banne, Stamme, Gefolgschaften, Scharen, and Kameradschaften.
Units of the HJ have been committed to "war employment" (Kriegsenisatz), discharging such duties as fire fighting and air raid protection. They have also been widely employed to help with the harvest and as conductors, mail clerks, postmen, and street cleaners as well as for salvage activities and collections for war charities. Since 1943 most members of the HJ have had to serve as antiaircraft auxiliaries (HJ-Luftwaffenhelfer and HJ-Marinehelfer), performing many functions in the antiaircraft batteries, which relieve older men for combat duty.
Bazooka battalions (Panzerschreckabteilungen) have recently been formed from HJ personnel. Close liaison between the HJ and both the Armed Forces and the Waffen-SS is maintained by means of specially appointed liaison officers. The elite of the HJ is used in its special Patrol Service (Streifendienst), which combines all the tasks of a junior SS and police force. The members of this group are most unscrupulous and are used as raiding squads and informers. In Poland they formed pursuit detachments (Rollkommandos) serving under officers of the SS Death's-Head Formations.

Notable members of the Volkssturm
Karl Packebusch - Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
Führer Volkssturm-Bataillon 3-617 Berlin-Wedding

Packebusch Battalion (Volkssturm)

Otto Herzog - Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
Führer Volkssturmeinheiten Festung Breslau / Führer Kampfgruppe Festung Breslau
https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/384 ... g-Otto.htm
Anton Eder - Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes
During the final battle for Berlin Oberst Eder commanded the defensive sector F (Spandau and Charlottenburg). The only troops at his disposal
were various alarm units, Volkssturm and Hitlerjugend.
On the 25.04.1945 the HJ-Kampfgruppen Pichelsdorf, Reichssportfeld and Heerstraße were gathered together as the HJ-Brigade “Reichsjugendführer Axmann”, and thrown into the battle. They were able to fend off a Soviet thrust towards the Heerstraße train station and hold open the Havel bridges at Pichelsdorf. These were later used for the breakout towards the west.

Ernst Wilhelm Knebel - Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub
Awarded for his actions in January 1945 up until he sustained severe injuries sustained on the 24.01.1945. In the middle of that month, as the Kampfkommandant of the city of Schillen (located on the Insterburg-Tilsit railway line), he was able to hold out in the city with alarm and supply units for quite some time until receiving the order to breakout and reach friendly lines.
Four days later, he would once again distinguish himself in leading his Volkssturm and alarm units in their defense of the line Wehlau-Tapiau.
In doing so he contributed significantly to maintaining the integrity of the German frontline between the Masurian Lakes and the Curonian Lagoon.

Kurt Hildebert Ellersiek - SS-Obersturmbannführer
Commander Volkssturm/Rheinfront
https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/741 ... debert.htm
Hans Hinkel
In March 1944, Hans Hinkel was appointed National Film Superintendent (Reichsfilmintendant). In this capacity he took steps to ensure that during the final phase of the war more half of the members of the German feature industry fulfilled their duty to serve in the German army and the militia (Volkssturm).
https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/414 ... l-Hans.htm
Arthur Axmann - Deutscher Orden des Grossdeutschen Reiches
Even in the last weeks of the war, he relentlessly continued the defense of Germany. To that end, he mobilized relatively small units of the HJ which would subsequently be made part of the Volkssturm. This also consisted of boys from the Jungvolk, a subdivision of the HJ for boys between the age of 10 to 14. They saw action during the battle for Berlin from mid April until early May 1945. In the last months of the war, he also was put under outside pressure to allow girls to take part in the last ditch defense of Germany. He vehemently rejected these suggestions: "Women give life, they do not take it," Axmann argued. Shortly after Hitler’s suicide on April 30th, 1945, he and N.S.D.A.P. secretary Martin Bormann fled the Führerbunker and left Berlin.

SS-Oberst-Gruppenführer Franz Schwarz - Service number: 38500 (SS) / 6 (NSDAP)
German politician in the NSDAP and served as the Reichsschatzmeister (National Treasurer). Schwarz led a Volkssturm battalion at the end of the war and was arrested by U.S. forces.

Re: An extensive list of Volkssturm-Bataillons?
Hi Mark,
Now, if we could just find an up-and-coming young author to pull together your years of absolutely amazing research and turn your trove of documentation into a well-funded multi-volume history of the Volkssturm......................Far-fetched? No! Dr. Jochen Prien (a maritime attorney from Hamburg) has done exactly that with the Die Jagdfliegerverbände der Deutschen Luftwaffe 1934 bis 1945, which will total 25 to 30 volumes, each between 500 and 700 pages when completed, and he already has published 80% of it.

Re: An extensive list of Volkssturm-Bataillons?
Dear Larry D
Thank you for your post. I do appreciate it very much. Thank you for your kind words. I take my hat off to Dr. Jochen Prien.. wow a maritime attorney .. too think, whilst doing his job, he has been able to compile so many volumes and pages, over 30 years, on the Luftwaffe.. that truly is outstanding.
I am more than happy for anyone to use the information, that I have found and turn it into something, such as you stated 'documentation into
a well-funded multi-volume history of the Volkssturm'. Now, that would be something. I hope the work I do contributes to the Axis History Forum
and that it keeps the History very much alive. This forum is brilliant.
The Volkssturm research, is not easy and after corresponding with Dr. David Yelton, who did much research on the Volkssturm, I understand his frustration. However, I believe that this least known topic the Volkssturm, [until now] does inspire someone to do something with it. As I am sure, you would appreciate, this information would have been lost and gathering dust somewhere. Having it in one place helps those interested in the topic easier access.
However, the Volkssturm research, is still very much alive and bearing much fruit, due to my own research and that of Sven30 [Helge] on 'Einheiten des Volkssturms'.
https://www.forum-der-wehrmacht.de/inde ... /&pageNo=1 .
I am limited to compiling my information via the internet [from Australia], whereas, Sven30 has a trusty band of followers in Germany, compiling research through local sources, which truly is amazing. Well done.
I am most grateful to them. I would recommend that AHF family check out Sven30's Volkssturm forum. It goes into greater detail on individual
units and as both of us have found, our information gathering, compliments each other. We do correspond and I have told Helge, if I find anything, please post it in his forum, which allows for those following the Volkssturm, to dig deeper, which has allowed for greater information to unfold and greater information sharing.
Larry, It probably would have been easier for me to email to every Kreis and Government Archive in Germany, as well as Archives in Poland, Russia and Czech territories and said, can you please send me what you have on the Volkssturm and waited for their response. The actual Bundesarchiv Folder for the Volkssturm is RH 59 - [Associations and units of the Volkssturm] and none of that has been digitally compiled and readily available. Sigh.
In between compiling information on the Volkssturm, as is humanly possible, I am compiling a list of NSDAP Gau, Kreis and Ortgruppes, as
Dr. Yelton pointed out, was instrumental for the NSDAP to create the Volkssturm. I will do Google searches into that based on the Volkssturm.
As for now Larry, I know you have been a great contributor to the AHF for as long as the Forum has existed and I do take your words on board.
I appreciate them very much. Thank you.
You have my respects always.
Mark

Re: An extensive list of Volkssturm-Bataillons?
What was the TOE for a Volkssturm Company.
Presumably they strived for some consistency?
Were they all light infantry or did they have some Supporting elements ?
