The German Volkssturm marches from 18.10.1944

Among other things, a transcript of the radio address of Hitler, Himmler and Koch is included.

Hello,

I'm "digging" in the archives since years and never found what I'm looking for. My Grandfather was a member of the "Volkssturm-Bataillon 95 Stabskompanie" located in 1945 in Koenigsbrueck (approximately 30 miles NE of Dresden). He wrote a "Feldpostbrief" dated January, 27 1945 to his son (my dad). To my knowledge, this Battalion has been shipped to the east front near Finkenherd in March 1945. He never returned home and we still have no place to grieve. I contacted so many agencies and researchers, but no one have any info about this particular battalion.
To my knowledge, why was this particular battalion almost two month in the Koenigsbrueck base? Normally was the Volkssturm Training only a few hours, may days.

Thanks for all info and help.

Dear Rudowin1962

Obviously you are the original writer.

I find this a fascinating post and I have compiled this into a continuos format.

Thank you for supplying your Grandfathers details.

My grandfather Alfons Wahl (born in 01, born on April 25, 1945 in the Beeskow district) was drafted into the Volkssturm Btl. 27/95 on January
22, 1945. According to my research he should have had the FPN 39824 (source stampsx.com). I recently received about 30 field post letters from
my grandfather from my father and am still in the process of deciphering them. On March 6, 45 he writes as the sender Volkssturm man Alfons
Wahl, 95th Volkssturm-Bataillon. Post collection point post office Fürstenwalde / Spree. In another letter, unfortunately undated, he writes FPN 24649 D, which probably belongs to Grenadier Regiment 1237. In a letter dated March 24, 45, the sender is Grenadier Alfons Wahl, FPN 58200/B.

It must belong to an SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment. As far as I know, there were no ranks in the Volkssturm. It may be, that he was taken over
by the Wehrmacht or SS? In any case, nothing could be learned from the Wast.

Thank you for your help, greetings from Dresden

CurtR_Dresden_ca193x-003k.jpg

Wast report, but it is very short.

Wahl , Alfons, born
January 24th, 1901 in Leipzig . 1945 Volkssturm-Bataillon 27/95, subordination not specified, only determined troop report

I copied the FPN from the letters. The 58200 / B can also be interpreted as 582001 B, but would then have six digits. In addition to the field post stamp, the letter also shows a poorly legible stamp from an administration of the Waffen SS.

Field post number 58200 B was assigned as follows for the period of March 1945: Staff, Map Office and Pioneer Leader V. SS Corps

Possibly he was not transferred to the SS, but only received the mail through this office.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The VS units had practically no supply and support parts of their own, ie they were always dependent on cooperation with other units or local offices.

So he may have sent the letter of March 6th. nor from the time when the VS unit was still in permanent accommodation, from 24.3. then
when he was in the field and could be reached by post via the SS unit.

In theory, he could/should have written as an SS member, even SS Grenadier, and not just Grenadier.

On the other hand, in the letter dated March 6th. behind the 95th VS-Btl. Yes, written staff company, ie he was already used there in the "leadership"" and thus perhaps recommended himself for use in the staff of the V. SS Corps.

Hi Germanicus,

Why is it so difficult to establish a definitive list of Volkssturm battalions?

Is it because they were organised on a Gau level outside the normal military hierarchy and OKW never received status reports centrally?

Is it because some or many local or national records were destroyed?

When you began your researches, roughly how many Volkssturm battalions were you aware of?

How many are you currently aware of?

Could you take a rough guess as to how many there may have been in total, at least on paper?

Will you be publishing the results in print?

Many thanks,

Sid.
Dear Sid

You asked the above question.

Here is a perfect reason as to why.

The following is an email I just sent to Sven30 [Helge] at Forum der Wehrmacht.

Volkssturm Königsberg

Dear Helge

I am sorry to bother you yet I came across the following map with many Volkssturm Units and I am trying to decipher the un-obvious
Volkssturm-Bataillones.

Unterlagen der Ia-Abteilung der Armee-Abteilung Samland: Anlagen zum KTB Nr. 1 der Armee-Abteilung Samland – Tagesmeldungen der Armee-Abteilung u.a.

The Russian-German project for the digitization of German documents in the archives of the Russian Federation | Case 165. https://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/ru/ ... rid/zoom/1

https://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/pag ... 61/zooms/8

In the above link it sights Volkssturm-Bataillon 24/74 !!!!!!!

Surely this is a typo? What would a Ost-Hannover Volkssturm Bataillon be doing there?

I have attached the actual jpeg for your viewing.
VS 24-74.JPG
The same Bataillon is sighted here

https://wwii.germandocsinrussia.org/pag ... 63/zooms/8

To complicate the matter.

In the above map Volkssturm-Bataillon 25/74 appears to be present at the same time as
Volkssturm-Bataillon 24/74 !!!!!!! however in a separate location.

VS 25 - 74.JPG
VS 25 - 74.JPG (29.56 KiB) Viewed 487 times

I have also have attached that for your perusal.

There are two other Volkssturm-Bataillones identified here one is

Volkssturm-Bataillon Liebel however I am unable to decipher the other.

I have attached this as well.
