Volkssturm-Bataillon Wilhelmsplatz

Re: Security in the Führerbunker 24.4.1945 13 May 2017, 19:05

Just time for a quick glance this WE - two things, it was SS-Brif. Dr. Werner Naumann that was in charge of the Volkssturm-Bataillon
Wilhelmsplatz, not Neumann.

Since Dr. Naumann was in charge of the Bataillon, he would hardly have been Kompanieführer of the Volkssturm-Kompanie in the Reichskanzlei.
In the sources mentioned above we don't find him present in the Führerbunker/Reichskanzlei though he held rank as Staatssekretär and SS-Brigadeführer, as well as being Dr. Goebbels deputy - not to mention that he succeeded Dr. Goebbels in Hitlers will … he is mentioned though on
the other side of the Wilhelmplatz, in the Propagandaministry. So he wouldn't have been the Kompanieführer in question.

Then there's Maximilian Kölz. I had a look at his files (SA (!) and RS) at the Bundesarchiv a few weeks back, to see if there was anything on Dienststelle 15, there wasn't. He didn't have a SSO-file, so no officers rank … the RS = RuSHA, holds the racial tests when SS-members wanted to marry, and to say it as it is: Max didn't pass … probably why he didn't rise to officers rank.

Good morning Halfdan,

Thanks, you're right : it is NAUMANN and not NEUMANN (I'll correct that).

I did not say NAUMANN was the Coy-commander; he commanded (as I did mention) the Propagandaministerium VS-Bn WILHELMPLATZ.

I used NAUMANN as a source because:

1. The VS-Bn he commanded is atypical (as it was composed with men who worked at the same place instead of men living in the same
Ortschaft, as was, as it seems, the case for the Reichskanzlei VS-Coy.

2. He stayed in the Reichskanzlei and, as such, was an inner-circle witness.

Regards,
Peter

Sönke Neitzel TAPPING HITLER’S GENERALS - Transcripts of Secret Conversations 1942–45 - speaking of the Volkssturm

Document 55

CSDIC (UK), GRGG 242

Report on the reaction of Senior Officers (PW) in Camp no. 11 to Hitler and Goebbels’s New Year speeches, 31 Dec. 44/1 Jan. 45.
[TNA, WO 208/4364]

THOMA: He was remarkably quiet today; he didn’t shout once.[126]

BASSENGE: One may be biased–I hardly like to put it into words, but was [it] really HITLER?

WAHLE: Oh, yes, definitely.

BASSENGE: Everything can be faked, even his voice.

WILCK: It keeps cropping up, in fact it’s become a settled there with him: ‘We survive as many things: such a People and such a Leader, who has patently been preserved by Providence, can never perish.’

WILDERMUTH: Yes, that’s the straw to which he clings.

WILCK: Of course, and so do the others.

WILDERMUTH: All the same one can say that our present position looks exactly like our downfall.

WILCK: That’s true enough. And when he speaks of ‘thousands of “Volkssturmbataillone”’–

WILDERMUTH: Of raising new ‘Divisionen’ out of nothing–he’d have done better to bring the old ones up to strength instead.

WILCK: Yes. Incompletely armed, equipped and trained. It means spilling the last life drops of the German people. And as for ‘sweeping away
the old society and system, and (preserving) the ultimate Truth, the People’–

WILDERMUTH: The people, which he holds in rein with concentration camp, torture and prison!

THOMA: He didn’t speak once of the soldiers in his army: it was the people all the time.

WAHLE: The German People’s State, with the middle class eliminated, destroyed and exterminated–

THOMA: That’s the bait to catch the people. But not a word about the fighting men.

WAHLE: Or at most one about the armchair generals.

THOMA: Yes, but otherwise he really hadn’t a word of thanks for the Wehrmacht.

WAHLE: He didn’t even mention them.

THOMA: It’s really rather remarkable, for there’s no doubt he produced some well-turned phrases.

BASSENGE: The speech was well thought out.

WAHLE: Well, after all, he’s had plenty of time for that.

WAHLE: Don’t you agree that these attempts of GOEBBELS to strike the ingratiating note arise from some degree of sentimentality? A sentimental mood. There was the hope of striking a responsive note from the enemy through this offensive started for political reasons. But a victorious
enemy, only five minutes off success, will, of course, never treat with him. He knows that himself now, so there’s nothing left to say but
‘at any rate we shall never capitulate’. The National Socialists never will capitulate, either. And Heaven help anyone else who does!
I conclude that the whole thing is a sign of our great weakness after all.

Strong terms are used to lead the people on: ‘hundreds of “Volkssturmbataillone” or “Volkswehrbataillone” are being formed.’

THOMA: ‘Thousands of “Bataillone”.’

WAHLE: It all bears the stamp of exaggeration. Besides that, the old belief is still there that the Allies will fall out among themselves; it’s the
same old belief in a miracle.

CHOLTITZ: All lies and deceit!

RAMCKE: But the speech will have a terrific effect all the same. The effect of GOEBBELS’s speech will also be very great.

[Konteradmiral Otto Kähler was the only prisoner at Trent Park who commented positively on Himmler’s speech of 18.10.1944
proclaiming the setting up of the Volkssturm.

Document 67

CSDIC (UK), GRGG 270

Report on information obtained from Senior Officers (PW) on 9 Mar. 45 [TNA, WO 208/4177]

ROTHKIRCH: I’ve had practical experience of it. It was at TREVES and it simply turned tail and ran. And the men in the ‘Volkssturm’! I had some of them in my village. I was living with a priest. There were two members of the ‘Volkssturm’ there, they got up at 0800 or 0830
hours and shaved until 0930 hours. Then I asked them what they were going to do that day. They replied that they were going to chop wood for
the priest. Then they were told to dig a few positions. They said no, they couldn’t do that. They had received different orders from their ‘Bataillonskommandeur’, they couldn’t do that.

Then I wanted to have some of the ‘Volkssturm’ on the KYLL. There are very steep hills there and positions had been dug in them. I said:
‘Now let us put a ‘Volkssturmbataillon’ here. The Americans won’t notice whether it’s a member of the ‘Volkssturm’ there or not.
The main thing is that they think that this stretch is manned.’ But that wasn’t possible either.

CHOLTITZ: Who gives the orders then?

ROTHKIRCH: The ‘Volkssturm’ come under the ‘Gauleiter’.

CHOLTITZ: Don’t they come under any military direction whatever?

ROTHKIRCH: You will never believe the funniest thing of all: when I left BOLITHA(?) I was sent up to EAST PRUSSIA[151] and my orders were to guard against the possibility of a Russian break-through via TAURAGE. I got the orders from Gauleiter KOCH! That’s not an exaggeration, it’s absolute fact.

ROTHKIRCH (re guerrilla warfare ): We will set it in motion. I know that for a fact, because I was in command of a guerrilla school in RUSSIA where men were trained by us in guerrilla warfare. They have been taken over now and they are now training partisans themselves. That is how I know.

HEIM: Do you think it will really help at all?

ROTHKIRCH: Yes, they are already staying behind now. There were some in my villages. They were SS men who, after the third cognac, told my intelligence officer exactly what they were supposed to do. Of course, they weren’t suppose to do that. But they told him just the same. They were there and were supposed to spy out everything. Most important of all, they were supposed to enlist other supporters. These SS men said that it was exceedingly difficult as there were no volunteers. Besides which–like us all–though they had explosives, they had no fuses. That was why they approached my intelligence officer.[152]

HEYDTE: So it was really more for purposes of sabotage?

ROTHKIRCH: Yes, just like the guerrillas do. But it’s a scourge for the civilian population.

HEIM: So these SS men were very pessimistic, were they?

ROTHKIRCH: The civilian population will hand them over at once.

HEIM: If they don’t hang them themselves.

BASSENGE: In addition to which every stranger in the locality is shadowed as soon as there’s an L of C commandant there, etc.

ROTHKIRCH: Your view is quite correct. But that again is overshadowed by yet another factor. There are the many badly bombed towns. Naturally enormous numbers of people have fled from the towns into the villages. Then, of course, they have to decide: who is a partisan? The evacuees blur the picture badly.

HEIM: Then there is also the question whether the population will participate.

ROTHKIRCH: I don’t think they will west of the RHINE. But I believe that there may perhaps be more wild, fanatical people east of the RHINE.

Freikorps Adolf Hitler

The Freikorps Adolf Hitler was a combat unit of the Volkssturm established in Germany at the end of the Second World War.

On 28 March 1945, Adolf Hitler ordered the formation of the association named after him (see BA-ZNS/WA 11g for the installation order). As Reich Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels informed the Gauleiter of the NSDAP in a letter on March 30, this was to be composed of "activists of the movement, volunteers of the Volkssturm and volunteers of the Werkschar" and of Robert Ley, the Reich organization leader of the NSDAP and
leader of the German Labor Front , be commanded; each Gau should set up a "Gauschwarm" of 1000 men. The candidates for the Freikorps
should be politically trained in the sense of the NSDAP and have basic military training. The rejection of a volunteer registration on the grounds
of the indispensability of the volunteer in the administration is not permissible due to the urgent war situation. Each volunteer should be provided
with a food ration for three days.

The establishment of the "Gauschwärme", which were divided into "Kreisschwärme" and "Einzelschwärme", was to take place on the military
training areas of the Wehrmacht, which were located in the Gau. The uniform should consist of training pants, uniform jacket, cap, camouflage
suit and armband with the inscription "Freikorps Adolf Hitler", the armament of assault rifles, anti-tank fists and hand grenades. Bicycles should
give them a certain mobility.

The units were subordinated to the army for the mission and also supplied by it. The Wehrmacht referred to the units as Panzerjagdkommandos
and Panzerjagdverbände.

Thus, units of the Freikorps "Adolf Hitler" such as the Panzerjagdverband "Döberitz" ("Gauschwarm Berlin") and the
Panzerjagdverband "Munster"
fought until the surrender as part of the 12th Army west of Berlin.

Westfront, February - March 1945. Pamphlet "Zwei Lehre- Eine Entscheidung!" - Allied Propoganda Leaflet

Surrender.JPG
Surrender.JPG (85.32 KiB) Viewed 705 times

This pamplet, "Two lessons - One Decision!", takes aim at two practices: evacuation and the Volkssturm militia, and argues strongly against them.

"1. The evacuations of East Prussia, Posen, Silesia, and the eastern parts of Pomerania and Brandenburg turned into horrific chaos, in which millions of peaceful workers, peasants, and citizens suddenly became miserable refugees. The NSDAP did not want to leave the Russians anything but "rubbish and ashes".

Result: Panic. Millions clogged the country roads, as there were neither sufficient means of transport nor provisions for the reception for refugees. Thousands became the free game of the Russian fighter-bombers fighting the German retreat. Other thousands who were brought to Berlin on the responsibility of the party fell victim to the heaviest air raids in the war. The lesson: in the face of an attacking modern army, an evacuation order means - MURDER.

2. The Volkssturm in Beuthen, Gleiwitz, Kattowitz, Königshütte, Oppeln und Hindenburg were thrown into action against trained shock troops of Konev's army. The NSDAP ordered thousands to be sacrificed and towns ravaged rather than to surrender in hopeless circumstances. The completely insuffient defenders were quickly defeated by Soviets and their cities taken anyway - by storming, instead of an orderly entry. Throwing the Volkssturm against a modern army is MURDER. Throwing yourself into such a mission is SUICIDE. At this stage of the war, there is only one salvation for a city in the combat area: orderly surrender."

What the pamplet blatantly ignores is that Germany in 1945 was hardly the place for an open conversation with soldiers or authorities, and that refusal to obey orders or counteract them was punishable with death. Again, we see that the pamplet does not really consider the plight of the civilian population, at which it is aimed, but above all intends to speed up the collapse of Germany.

Tirol Volkssturm Lied and Tirol Standschützen Lied [Songs by Jakob Kopp]

Jakob Kopp was part of a movement of dialect poets in Imst around Karl von Lutterotti .

During the time of National Socialism , Kopp wrote National Socialist propaganda : in 1938, for example, the text for the so-called connection song about the “Anschluss” of Austria to the German Reich with the refrain “Ein Volk, ein Reich, ein Führer”; Leo Eiter was responsible for the music .

Kopp also wrote the anti-Semitic poem Tiroler Volkssturm 1944 , which was implemented as a folk song by Josef Eduard Ploner and was included in his propaganda songbook published in 1942 on behalf of Gauleiter Franz Hofer .

Kopp's best-known work is the homeland poem Miar Oberländer felsaföst , which is considered the "Hymn of the Oberlanders ". It was also set to music by Ploner and premiered in Imst on May 27, 1944 as part of a “Customs Evening”.

Jakob-Kopp-Straße in Imst is named after him!!!

Here Kopp refers to the so-called Sportpalast speech by Joseph Goebbels on February 18, 1943 in Berlin (“Do you want total war?”).
From Goebbels' final appeal in this speech: "Now, people, get up and storm break out!" Kopp makes "The Volkssturm breaks out -
the Volkssturm breaks out!"

Kopp wrote a second version for his friend Ploner, who had withdrawn to remote Tarrenz during this time, and he also set it to music:

"My belief in the final German victory is stronger than ever," Ploner wrote to his fellow musician Josef Gasser from Tarrenz on October 23, 1944. Apparently Jakob Kopp has the same view. After the Gauleiter had integrated the Tyrolean Standschützen into the Volkssturm, he also incited
them into the hopeless war.

From the warm room in Hall, Kopp lets this his first “Standschützenlied” be followed by a second one, even more violent than the first.

Young and old alike must flash for our guide and for the Reich every Stutzn from our Tyrolean riflemen.

Division Woldenberg

Volkssturm-Bataillon aus Rostock und Wismar (600 Mann).

Volkssturm-Kompanie Schauseil aus Woldenberg.

From the diary records of Ernst Prochnow [**] we know that the Woldenberger Volkssturm was brought to Steinbusch on 26 January 1945:
"Should probably wage war there. Fortunately, in groups and individually, the men had crumbled westwards," Prochnow noted in 1945.
Two days later, on 28 January, he saw Kölzig's teacher and Volkssturmführer Schauseil fleeing to the west...

Volkssturm-Kompanie aus Friedeberg.
