Hello Sandeep,
Me too!
I've compiled a list of 39 VS-Bns that saw combat in the battle for Berlin.
Of course, that list is not final; there are Always units to be found and added.
The Bns mentionned in my last post are not in my list. The only source on the web I know of, is the "Russian link".

As source you post a link to a Russian page.
My knowledge of the Russian language is nil.
How good (reliable) is thar source? What do those pages tell ?
Battalion 421 - mentioned in a battle report of the 79 Rifle Corps, 30.04.1945
Battalion 713 - from a report of the 3 Shock Army's political section on psychological warfare (so to say) against the Berlin garrison.
It must be said that 3 SA was nowhere near the Pichelsdorf bridge, it occupied northern and central (Reichstag) sectors of Berlin.

There is quite a lot of information on Berlin Volkssturm and miscellaneous units of Berlin garrison in general in various Soviet documents, yet nobody put it in systematic form, as far as I can see.

As far as my information goes, the 79 Rifle Corps was part of the 3 SA during the Berlin offensive. In fact, personnel from the 79 RC hoisted the red flag over the Reichstag on 30th April. So .... Bn 421 couldn't possibly have been in the Pichesdorfer vicinity on 30.4

Hello,

In “Bloody streets” you can find:
"... the - 12 - VS-Bns encountered by the Soviet forces (Russian source Platonov) are named: 3, 16, 17, 39, 93, 103, 107, 109, 121, 205, 260 and 721...."

I think they have encountered a tad more than those 12 Bns ...
Until proven wrong, I'm hesitating to use Russian information.

Respecting the numerical sequence: Bn 3/713 would have been drafted by NSDAP-Kreis "Prenzlauer Berg - Horst Wessel".
I would suspect Spandau, Wilmersdorf or even Charlotteburg drafted Bns at the bridge site ... (i.e. high 3/2.., low 3/4..),
so Bn 3/421 - could - have been there

Cheers

Peter

Hello Uwe

If you google the following - "Volkssturm-Bataillon 27/454 (Fehleintragung)" . It clearly states this as such, in the Feldpost listing for this unit. That is why I posted the unit as such, as was indicated in the following.

Hello Art, lutrebois and sandeep

The actual information came from an extensive work in russian which can be located at

http://militera.lib.ru/docs/da/berlin_45/index.html

I would say it is a primary source considering the book in question is titled - Russian Archives: The Great Patriotic War
T. 15 (4-5). Battle for Berlin (the Red Army defeated Germany).

I used google chrome and google translator to source this book. The translation is as good as google can translate.

When I am researching Volkssturm-Bataillones, I do not stick to the english and german spelling to locate units. It is more helpful if you use the foreign spelling to enhance my research. For example, in Russian, I google the following фольксштурма батальонов [Volkssturm-Battalion]. I hope this helps with your questions.

The question relating to the records in Russian, came straight from the following Battle Report :-

Dear Uwe

If Volkssturm-Bataillon 27/454 is incorrect, then what of the designation in the Feldpost listing stating the Bataillon as 27/454?

Your assistance would be appreciated.

Dear lutrebois

thank you for your excellent contribution to the Volkssturm. Your post Berlin Volkssturm...At Last! is outstanding.

I came across this on the following link on a Russian Field Map depicting the 24 - 29th April 1945 Berlin.

The Volkssturm-Bataillones noted in the Berlin map are 181, 268, 803, 813, 869 and interestingly the 16/209 Volkssturm-Bataillon. Further there is a Hitler-Jugend-Bataillon 10 km North of the Pichelsdorf Bridge!! ( viewtopic.php?f=50&t=211568&hilit=Havel )
