A fascinating post in relation to Südostwall-Abschnitt Südburgenland relating to the Volkssturm. [English translation]

Südostwall-Abschnitt Südburgenland

Construction and alerting of the Volkssturm

In October 1944, the formation of the German Volkssturm was announced, in which all "men capable of weapons between the ages of 16 and 60" were to be recorded. There were four so-called contingents (Contingent I, Contingent II, Contingent III and Contingent IV), whereby usually only for battalions of Contingent I enough weapons were available. Thus, the military stocks in the Alpine and Danube Empires were only sufficient to equip a maximum of 30 Volkssturm-Bataillones. [49]

The approximately 700-strong Volkssturm-Bataillones were set up at district level. [49] A battalion was identified using a multi-level numbering system. The first number stood for the Gau (Styria had the number 31), the second number stood for the battalion number within the Gau. [50] Thus, at the end of March 1945, the Volkssturm-Bataillon Weiz 31/201, i.e. the 201st Volkssturm-Bataillon of the Gau Of Styria, set up in the district of Weiz, was used in the fighting against the Red Army. [51] To identify the four companies of a battalion, there was a third number. Volkssturm Kompanie 31/46/3, deployed in March 1945 on the Südostwall, was the 3rd Company of the 46th Volkssturm-Bataillon established in the Gau of Styria. [51]

On 23 December 1944, 15 Volkssturm-Bataillones of Styria were requested by the High Command of the Army for the redoubt work on the southeast
wall. Since there were many peasants and workers among the Volkssturmmänner, they had to be dismissed from the redoubt work in mid-February. On 9 March, the Gauleiter finally sent all the Volkssturm-Bataillones entrenched at the Reichsschutzstellung home, without having coordinated this with higher military authorities beforehand. Neither the Chief of the German General Staff, Colonel General Heinz Guderian, nor the Chief of the Command Staff of the Deutscher Volkssturm, Major General Hans Kissel, were aware of this measure. [46]

When, on 24 March, Chief of the General Staff Heinz Guderian was finally informed that all Volkssturm-Bataillones had left the Reich protection position, it was first believed in high treason. Major General Hans Kissel was then sent to Vienna to clarify the facts. On 25 March, therefore, the Volkssturm-Bataillones were again alerted and the reoccupation of the Reich Protection Position. In the meantime, the military situation of Army Group South had deteriorated to such an extent due to the Soviet offensive in the context of the Vienna operation that it passed on alert level I to the fortress section niederdonau, which also had to trigger the occupation of the southeast wall as agreed. [46]

Kissel then continued to Styria and also reached Gauleiter Uiberreither that on 25 March 14 Styrian Volkssturm-Bataillones were alerted and subsequently marched towards the border. On the morning of that day, the Körmend Command had also forwarded the highest warning level III for the Celldömölk-Sárvár area to the offices in Styria. [52] Thus, literally at the last minute, it was achieved that the Volkssturm occupied the position system just before the arrival of the first units of the Red Army. For the area from Rechnitz to Radkersburg, this was around 5,000 men or around 30 to 35 men per front kilometre. This was roughly equivalent to the target strength of half a Soviet rifle division. If one also considers that the Volkssturmmänner had no combat experience in addition to the inadequate armament and the far too short training time, then the men did not have the spark of a chance against the battle-tested units of the Red Army. [52]

Kampfraum Güssing/Jennersdorf Exploiting this chaos, the XVIII Panzer Corps of the Soviet 27th Army advanced more than 110 kilometers in six days.
With its approximately 200 tanks and assault guns, the unit crossed the Reichsschutzstellung near Neuhaus am Klausenbach on 31 March and advanced further west towards Bad Gleichenberg. [64] In the process, the Volkssturmbataillon Murau, which had just arrived at Kalch at the Reich Protection Position and wanted to go into position there, was unceremoniously overrun. [65]

The Volkssturm-Bataillon Graz-Land, which had already been deployed in the Reich Protection position, surrendered to the more than overwhelming superiority by waving white cloths. The nearby Volkssturm-Bataillon Jennersdorf evaded its capture by fleeing. Resistance, however, was provided by the Volkssturm-Bataillon Liezen and the Zollgrenzschutzkompanie Jennersdorf, which were supported by an anti-aircraft combat team. [57]
