Re: An extensive list of Volkssturm-Bataillons?
Heer Einheit Herold, Volkssturm-Einheit Schütte, Kreisleiter in Aschaffendorf, Gauleitung Oldenburg
Participation in the shooting of over 125 prisoners of the HS Emslandlager II (Aschendorfermoor) containing German army deserters and of 5 Dutch prisoners suspected of espionage in the Polizeigefängnis Leer [police prison Leer] The defendants belonged to the 'Einheit Herold', formed by the deserted Corporal Herold, who pretended to be a captain, from scattered soldiers, which carried out these shootings.
On April 12, 1945, at 6 p.m., Herold, Schütte, and guard Bernhard Meyer, as well as Herold's group, a group of guards, and Volkssturm volunteers, opened fire on the prisoners. Initially, the main weapon was a 20-millimeter anti-aircraft gun , the first set of which hit the prisoners' feet. Due
to a cannon loading failure, Herold ordered the execution to continue with handguns. Finally, more hand grenades were thrown into the mass
grave. During the evening, two more groups were executed, a total of 96 prisoners. After this, a prison command was called to cover the grave, which, however, refused, leaving the guards to do the work themselves.
Herold sent Volkssturm to look for more escaped prisoners. When no one was found, he began to select more prisoners to be executed from the prisoners in the camp. He started with aliens, then moved on to military fugitives and shot 74 prisoners over the next few days. It was not until the Allied air strike on Aschendorfermoor that the killing ended on 19 April. Although some dozens of prisoners died in the bombing, most of the air strike escaped. By the time Herold left the camp, his group had grown into a group of German volunteer prisoners, who he was promoted back as soldiers.
Finally, on the night of 27 to 28 on April 1945 the year the group was disarmed Herold in Aurich by a detachment of German Military Police under
the orders of local Field Commander Otto Hübner and interrogated. The deception was exposed, and all the members of the "Einheit Herold", including Willie Herald himself, were placed under arrest. Herold confessed to the mass shootings in the camp and other murders. However, the urging of SS-Untersturmführer Urbanek , who was impressed by the aggressive behavior of the Herald, and a Nazi court, in the turmoil of the last
days of the war, acquitted everyone and they were released!!!!!!

This incident is captured in the 2017 film 'The Captain (German: Der Hauptmann) is a 2017 international co-produced historical drama film written and directed by Robert Schwentke. It was screened in the Special Presentations section at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival. It tells the story of German war criminal Willi Herold, who assumed a stolen identity as a German officer and orchestrated the killing of deserters
and other prisoners at one of the Emslandlager camps.'
In August 1946, Herold and 12 others were tried in Oldenburg by the British (overseen by Colonel H. Brown). They were held responsible for the murder of 125 people. On 29 August 1946, Herold and six other co-defendants (Karl Hagewald, Bernhard Meyer, Karl Schütte, Josef Euler, Hermann Brandt and Otto Paeller) were sentenced to death, while five others were acquitted. On 14 November 1946, Herold and the five other defendants were executed by guillotining by Friedrich Hehr in Wolfenbüttel prison
