Here's a question - does anyone know whether Hack had any children & if so, would anyone know how to get in touch with him?

During the Spring of 1943, Nordland had it full complement of three battalions. All three took part in the battles for the Donets line. III./Germania and III./Westland do not appear in any report.

In the archives of Heeresgruppe Don (NARA T-311 R-271) I found a "Zustandmeldung" of Wiking dated 19-1-1943. Wiking reports 7 Infantry Batalions (2 medium strong, 4 average and 1 weak). As Nordland still had 3 batalions at that moment, Westand and Germania had only 2. So on 19-1-1943 III./Germania was indeed no longer at Wiking.

On 8-1-1943 Wiking reports to LVII.Panzerkorps (NARA T-314 R-1487) that Germania with I. II. III. and I./SS-A.R.5 was defending the sector Werchne Werchomolof. So on 8-1-1943 III./Germania was still at Wiking.

On 10-1-1943 Wiking reports to LVII.Panzerkorps (NARA T-314 R-1487) that I. and III. Germania were at Kurmojaskij. So on 10-1-1943 III./Germania was still at Wiking.

Thanks Bram - from the photos we have from Ernst Baumann, one of the contact sheets shows Franz Hack and some of his officers in what looks like the Division's rest area near Rostov, and since there's no snow on the ground, I can only assume that they were taken between April - May 1943 (there's a photo in there with a sign that says "Soldatenheim Rostow". By June of course III./"G" had departed the framework of the division. (Note: All of the photos that we have are in the sequence in which they were taken).

Another question - wonder if Hans Weber is also monitoring this exchange. What happened to III./"Westland" at the same time? They seem to have been moved out of the division at the same time. So, does anyone know whether they shipped all of III./"Germania," i.e., the entire battalion, bag and baggage, Keg und Kegel, with all the Mannschaften, or did they just transfer to the staff, specialists & Tross back to the Heimat, leaving the Mannschaften to flesh out the other two battalions in the regiment with replacements? Inquiring minds want to know!

Hello Bram,

If you take a look at the first page of this topic, you will see that I have given indications that III./G was still with Wiking on 15 January.
Best regards,
Charles

good initiative..

One of the best regiments in the W-SS and probably the whole Wehrmacht.

With an incredibly high number of knight cross and german cross winners, it deserve its own book. I will be a buyer :)

The earliest Zustandbericht I had was dated July 1943 and like the one from May also showed them as "Fehl."
Hello!

I am looking for exactly the "Zustandsbericht" (July 1943) that you have - can you tell me where it can be found (Nara roll)?

Thank you very much!

Thank you very much!

I am currently researching the Izyum–Barvenkovo Offensive from 17 July 1943 to 27 July 1943 (this [1]). These are "forgotten battles", mostly because they happened in the shadow of the Battle of Kursk. There are a lot of primary sources for the Soviet side, but almost none for the German side. Do you maybe know if the war diary of Wiking is available somewhere (or the KTB of the 17th Panzer Division and the 257th Infantry Division which were also fighting there)?

The focus is on a small area (Wiking and the 17th Panzer Division were "injected" there, shortly after the Soviet offensive started) in the Semenovka-Andreevka-Sawodskoje area southwest of Izium:

An interesting (and sad) aspect is: last year some of these battles were almost "recreated"; similar fighting in the same settlements and Donets River sections.

Best wishes!
