Differences between O.Qu., Qu.1, Qu.2, O2, O6

Post by CNE503 » 11 Aug 2019 08:01

Hello,

Could someone please explain what were the differences in the staff task organization between the Oberquartiermeister Ib, his first subordinate, the zweiter Generalstabsoffizier (Qu.1), his second subordinate, the fünfte Generalstabsoffizier (Qu.2) and their deputies, the O2 and O6?
To sum up my question: what were the different attributions to all these logistical officers in a staff? It is far more understandable for the officers in the Führungsabteilung, Ia, Ic and Id having different clear attributions (operations, intel, training), with their own deputies (O1, O3, O4).

Thank you for any help provided.
Regards,

Not entirely sure if this is of help or if it doesn't relate to the question at all.

www.sturmpanzer.com has the US Army issued Size & Composition of Divisional & Higher Staffs in the Germany Army in the Foreign Military Studies (1954) series which goes in to a lot of detail.

Interesting, I'm struggling with the same question as I for one Division, that I'm looking at, at the same time have a Ib and a "Divisionsquartiermeister" - the Officer referred to as Divisionsquartiermeister has a higher rank than the Ib?

Div.Qu. is the same as Div.Ib

Exactly, that's what wonders, how come the same Division has both someone who is named Ib and someone else ranked higher called Divisionsquartiermeister? Are Units known to have double staffing in battles f.ex.?

because Quartiermeister at div.level is simply indicated as "Ib" (at corps-Level as "Qu.", etc.)

I do understand all that ... I'm trying to says that I at one moment in time have a Division, this Division has one officer who is named as Ib and at the same time another (higher ranking) officer that is named as Divisionsquartiermeister. So this Division apparently has two officers being Ib/Divisionsquartiermeister at the same time ... I find this strange, so my question is: Are Units known to have double staffing in battles?

Is it possible one of these actually refers to the Kodina? Wouldn't be quite correct, but it's the best I can think of without seeing the documents.

Another option, that someone addressed the head of the Hauptquartier as Divisionsquartiermeister, seems unlikely, especially because of the higher rank.

It could very well be that the Ib was a Major i.G. or even a Haupmann training for the Generalstab, while the Kodina was an Oberstleutnant. Despite the rank, the Major was the superior of the Oberstleutnant due to his position.

That's exactly why I'm considering the Kodina, but are there (other) examples of the Kodina being referred to as 'Divisionsquartiermeister'? If there are we probably have a sufficient explanation.
