Former name for Kurt Schumacher barracks in Hannover
Does anyone know the original name of the Kurt Schumacher barracks in Hannover, which the British renamed as Stirling house during the post war years until it was handed back to the West Germans? And also, which regiment of the Heer were stationed there?
Re: Former name for Kurt Schumacher barracks in Hannover
Numerous sources identify the Kurt-Schumacher-Barracks that is used by the Bundeswehr (formerly the Stirling House when occupied by the British as you wrote) as being the former headquarters of General Command of the 11th Army Corps, Military District Command 11, and Military District Administration 11 during the Third Reich (TR) era. I find no mention that a regiment of the army (heer) was stationed there but that these higher command elements all were.
Using the TR information and the location of the barracks (then located on Misburger Damm, since renamed to Hans-Böckler-Allee as it is today), the only references I have found all refer to the location as the General Command on Misburger Damm (Generalkommando am Misburger Damm) or more specific variations of that title such as Generalkommando des XI. Armeekorps, der Wehrkreisverwaltung XI und der Wehrwirtschaftinspektion XI am Misburger Damm, etc.
This leads me to conclude that this specific location was not called a barracks (kaserne) at all during the TR era, but was instead referred to as indicated above. Unless someone else can come up with sources showing otherwise this appears to be the most plausible explanation.
Hope this is helpful. Best regards.
