Welcome in the forum, locky!
Sadly you posted your plea in the wrong subforum ( Translation help: Breaking the Sound Barrier ) as this one is meant to receive help for foreign text where one need a translation from. I´ll ask one of the moderators/admns to move it to " Heer, Waffen-SS & Fallschirmjäger " where it´s more likely that you get help.

I can only add that "Panzer Tank gunner " doesn´t sound "right" as Panzer is only the German term for tank.
Most likely you do also mean "Aufklärungsabteilung = reconnaissance detachment" with "motorcycle reconnaissance unit" which often had also motorcycles. In his case then it would have been the "SS-Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung 2" when I´m not wrong. In case I´m wrong sure another member with more knowledge about this SS-division will correct me.
Excuse my ignorance but what exactly do you mean with "machine gunner"?? There is no such function, as far as I know.
"Iron Cross usually presented for hitting 50+ tanks." is also incorrect as this order was awarded exclusively for special bravery in front of the enemy and for outstanding service in command of the troops. That was the official requirement.
My advice: Contact the Bundesarchiv in Germany, but be prepared to wait at least 1,5 years until you receive an answer.

Regarding his membership in the Hitlerjugend (HJ) you need to know that this was mandatory by law:

I've seen this discussed in Facebook groups and raised some concerns.

My main point: was Willi Huber an assumed name, an SS veteran who spiced up his military career by pretending to've been an officer or was he never in the SS at all?

Because the only Willi Huber in the Führerliste der Waffen-SS was born in 1906 and is long dead. Willi could indeed be short for Wilhelm but there is not a single SS officer named Wilhelm Huber listed.

Several news sites say he died aged 97-years old would mean he was born in 1922 or 1923, A Wilfried Huber was born in 1923 but he was only an Ustuf - more importantly - was KIA in 1945.

From several newssites it seems that this is him in what looks like a late war tank uniform with Rottenführer collar tab. With this uniform and him not being listed in the Führerliste der Waffen-SS, it seems likely that either his promotion to an officer rank happened near the very end of the war - but for a Hauptsturmführer not to be listed anywhere as an Ustuf or Ostuf seems highly improbable - or if he perhaps spiced up his military career a bit (wouldn't be de first I've seen).
