Stabsgefreiter meaning
Stabsgefreiter meaning
What kind of rank was Stabsgefreiter?
One stripe with one star was Obergefreiter +6 years
Two stripes and one star Stabsgefreiter.
Was it a real rank or not? Was for experienced soldiers? Who was Stabsgefreiter was not promoted to Unteroffizier?

Re: Stabsgefreiter meaning
The German army divided its men into officers, NCOs and enlisted men. If you were not selected as an an officer or NCO you remained an enlisted man. But as an enlisted man there was a rank progression. Enlisted man ranks were soldat (or some variant =grenadier/schutz/kanonier/pionier) - ober (whatever the private soldier rank) - grefreiter - ober gefreiter (6 years) - stabs grefreiter (even more). These were determined by seniority = years served. So a Stabs Gefreiter was what we know as a 20 year lance corporal.
Every army has them. Maybe chronically unfit, stupid, alcoholic, mentally defective, unbalanced, ill disciplined, lazy, unreliable, feckless or any combination of the aforesaid that ruled them out from serious responsibility or commanding authority from soldiers. He will have a place in the stores or a training establishment. Possibly a regimental character. (Read the McClauslan Books by George Macdonald Fraser)
As my Battery Sergeant Major once said of one of my proposed recommendations for promotions: "Bombardier X will never make sergeant as long as he has a hole in his arse."

Re: Stabsgefreiter meaning
Thanks for the infos. I knew was a promotion after Obergefreiter but not good soldiers (usually attached to a HQ in a Regiment, Battalion or Company), a soldier with experience but not so good to be NCO
Re: Stabsgefreiter meaning
A Stabsgefreiter was a 20 years old Obergefreiter? Or could be less, I mean in a war, for example 3 years old
Re: Stabsgefreiter meaning
How much time took a soldier in war to became Stgefr.? 2-5 years?
Re: Stabsgefreiter meaning
Hi everyone, are Gefreiter and Obergefreiter regarded as NCOs? Its just that I have been looking at half Zug platoons in Panzer-Aufklärungs companies, I see the second 250/1 in each Gruppe commanded by a StellvGru Fuhrer, so is this EM a Gefreiter or Obergefreiter?
