Jagdpanzer IV/70's with Kampfgruppe Hansen

Post by AKahl » 23 Nov 2020 05:35

I was wondering what the best info is regarding the number of Jagdpanzer IV/70's attached to Kampfgruppe Hansen during the Ardennes Offensive in December of 1944. PALLUD states that there were only 10 present "on the eve of the offensive". Other books state that there were 21. As a general rule I would tend to believe the lesser number, in the absence of any compelling evidence, but trust that you guys will know whatever the actual number was or what can best be reconstructed.

Also, do we know of the total losses of these tank destroyers attached to KG Hansen, or as part of SS Panzerjaeger Battalion 1 overall, during the offensive? I know that one fell into the Ambleve, when the bridge at Petit Spai collapsed under it's weight. I've seen at least two pictures of this vehicle, one with a layer of snow on it, so I'm assuming it was unrecoverable.

I tried to search for this here on the forum, in the belief that it's probably been addressed before, but the name Hansen hits like a phone book.

Thanks as always and Regards,
Remain yourself, in spite of all the mighty do.

Tiemann, Leibstandarte IV/2 has a couple of appendices that could shed some light.

There are several org charts, for example 12th Feb 45, shows 2x IV/70s left in one Kompanie, and 5x in the other.

The chart from before the offensive shows 10+10, along with Rettlingers, would make 21.

Tiemann's informative narrative is not 100% on all things, but the Appendix is an official document.

I'd add Duel in the Mist 3 by Haasler, Vosters and Weber has a low level detailed description of KG Hansen, with sources, from page 60 onwards. They state 21 IV/70's.

I have been trying to collect the totals of different AFVs used by the German Army for this operation, so was the total number of IV/70s field during the offencive 21?

Thank you

IV Zug of Rettlinger's Abteilung also had 4x StuG III's. The platoon only reached the Ardennes on the 6th Jan 1945, according to Grumblies the 3rd Kompanie commander. (pg61 Duel In The Mist3).

Looking through the Bundesarchiv at the LSSAH reports from December 1944 (RH10/312) the PzJg.Abt had 20x IV/70s. The reports dating from 1943 onwards show the strengths of the division. For example August 1944 it had 28x IV/70s, Feb 1945 just 7.

this blog was an invaluable help and so far has helped me view every Panzer (RH10/140), SS Division and other divisions and brigades. The only indexes I'd like to see but haven't been able to is for the Fallshirmjager.
