German forces on castle Mookerheide Holland between may 1940 and september 1944

Post by hans.wolters2207@gmail.com » 14 Jun 2021 15:41

As a volunteer for Naturmonumenten Holland, I deal with the history of the Mookerheide castle and estate during the Second World War. This is owned by Natuurmonumenten.
The castle is located near Nijmegen, a few kilometres from the German border with Kleve.

It is known that the castle was captured on 10 March 140 by 474 IRs from the 254 infantry division. And that the castle and estate were requisitioned by the Ortskommandatur in 1942. The field ammunition depot 15/VI was built nearby around this time.

The castle was captured on September 17, 1944 by the 82nd American Airborne Division. A prisoner of war camp was set up there for several days.

However, it is not known what exactly happened during the presence of the Germans on the estate and in the castle. Reichskommissar Seiss Inquart was supposed to have requisitioned the castle as early as June 1940 and it was a country seat of the Waffen SS. However, this cannot be found in archive documents.

That leads me to the following questions:

• Which army unit (s) were in the castle? When, and what numbers were involved?
• What was the type of activity? What has happened there?
• Is it true that the castle was a country residence or a rest home for the Waffen SS or other army units?
• Is the rumor true that Himmler visited the castle? If so, when and what was the reason for this visit?
Ans is the rumor true that a number of German soldiers were executed on the estate by their own forces?
• What sources is this based on? Where can these sources be found?

Welcome, Hans!
Do you have any period photos of the site and it's German inhabitants? Good luck with your research, unfortunately I'm unable to answer your questions.
Best,
Pat

Did the castle had alternative names during the war?

The munition area was renamed from M.A.St. to Fl.Mun.Lg.15/VI. in november 1943 and was still in use at januari 1944.

When it was requisitioned by the Ortskommandatur in 1942 they called it Landgut Mooker Heide. Later on Landgut Mookerheide. As far as I know they dit not use other names.

You might give it a try under the name of Schloss Mook or Schloss Mookerheide. Or Schloss Mokerheide.

Hi.
I thought i had seen something at the book "Kampfgruppe Walther" by Didden & Swarts. Unfortunately it is the wrong "castle".
So i had looked into my other Market Garden files and it seems to me that the castle was in the combat area of the somewhat "mysterious" Generalkommando Feldt. The "Korps Feldt" was an alert unit. It is most likely that the Division zbV 406 (Div.-Stab z.b.V. 406/Division Scherbening) had placed some of its adhoc units close to the castle but as far as i know the 406. Division is one of the last "blind spots" for the Market Garden campaign.
