Alois was the rank of Obergefreiter. Throughout his military service he was awarded the War Merit Cross 2nd Class with Swords. Alois was with a supply company serving in North Africa specifically near Marsa Matruk when on September 1st 1942 at age 29 he was killed by a low flying aircraft. I’m assuming it was a Strafing Run. He is buried in the military cemetery in El Alamein. Any additional info on him is greatly appreciated. From my collection.

His casualty card shows he was a member of Nachschubkompanie (mot.) 33 of 15.Panzer-Division.

That’s odd, the German War graves commission states he’s buried in El Alamein.

Edit: I just learned that the German war graves commission reburied a lot of soldiers at El Alamein post war. So yeah you’re correct about original burial location

As he was part of a supply unit and killed in an aircraft attack I guess he was victim of one of the daily routine harrassement air attacks on supply lines.

Hi,
Marsa Matruh is located 170 km west of El Alamein. On September 1st the battle of Alam Halfa (part of El Alamein battles) took place. So, as Christoph stated, this was an air attack far behind the frontline.

It should be relatively easy to figure out which unit undertook the attack, as all the Allied ORBs are online.
The enemy had superiority in numbers, his tanks were more heavily armoured, they had larger calibre guns with nearly twice the effective range of ours, and their telescopes were superior. 5 RTR 19/11/41
