SS POWS fighting with Arabs against Israel 1948?

Years ago I came across a account that claimed that members of Axis POWS such as the Bosian Muslin SS escape from Prison Camps In the Middle east and that at least one was killing fighting the Jews in Israel in 1948. Can this be confirmed?

There is a webpage about POW Camps in the Canal Zone in Egypt. There were PW in Eguypt until the end of 1948. Initilaly repatriation was slow because the auithorities were reluctant to lose manpower, then there was a shortage of shipping. http://www.canalzoners.co.uk/POW%20Camp ... 20Egyt.htm

As there was nowhere to run, there were no reported escapees but the POW’s were subjected to raids on the camp now and again by local terrorists driving round the perimeter fence in old cars and trucks, firing a few shots and then making off in a cloud of dust. No one ever got hit, in fact no one really too much notice.

This does not sound like the Stern Gang.

They were in Palestine.Which became Israel.They concerned themselves with the British till 48.

Surely just a crazy story from some Palestinian.
