How many Germans defended Dieppe on 19.8.1942?

Post by JBL107 » 30 Sep 2023 20:36

In the voluminous literature on Operation Jubilee, the Canadian/British raid on Dieppe, 19 Aug. 1942, I have yet to find any real figures as to the personnel strength of the various units of the 302. Inf. Division which fought there. I would be most grateful to know approximately how many Germans actually defended Dieppe and its environs.

Thanks,
John

The German wikipedia gives a figure of approximately 1,500 involved in the battle, but unfortunately does not cite a source for that figure. It does mention "Verlustlisten RL 2/III" in the Bundesarchiv as a source for German casualties in the battle.

Cheers

Thanks. According to that entry on Operation Jubilee, the figure of 1,500 men refers just to Inf. Rgt. 571, which was the main infantry force among the defenders. That would not count the artillery, pioneer, naval, and Luftwaffe personnel who were also present. I'm hoping some document would provide all the details.

Best wishes,
John

Heer losses were c. 353:

302. Infanterie-Division reported losses of 5 officers and 96 enlisted killed, 5 officers and 175 enlisted wounded, 4 enlisted captured, and 3 enlisted missing. Attached Heeres-Küsten-Artillerie lost 28 enlisted killed, 1 officer and 32 enlisted wounded, and 4 enlisted men captured.

Kriegsmarine losses are unknown:

U-Boot-Jäger 1404. was lost with all 46 officers and enlisted aboard but I have never seen any other losses mentioned

Luftflotte 3 reported losses of lost 74 aircraft (of which 50 were total losses) on 19 August 1942: 5 reconnaissance, 29 fighter, and 40 bomber. Other sources give 48 total losses and 24 damaged, but that may have been just in the vicinity of Dieppe.

Luftwaffe personnel losses were c. 199:

Aircrew - 5 officers and 78 enlisted killed, 2 officers and 26 enlisted wounded, 3 Officers and 5 enlisted captured
Ground personnel - 1 officer and 25 enlisted killed, 51 enlisted wounded

The Commonwealth forces brought 37 enlisted men back as POW, of which 8 were Heer, so those reported by 302. Infanterie-Division. The rest were the 8 Luftwaffe, which leaves around 21 as Kreigsmarine, although it is possible some could have been paramilitary such as OT, RAD, and NSKK, or German civilian occupation personnel.

So an upper end would be around 598. That matches pretty closely with the common German accounting of 591 casualties including 311 dead and missing.

Thank you. If I do manage to find out the actual German strength, I'll post it here with sources.

I should have mentioned I suspect the figure of 1,500 engaged for Inf-Regt 571 was probably Gefechtsstärke, since the divisions was being built up for service on the Ostfront.

Interesting the 37 men brought back.

Return to “Heer, Waffen-SS & Fallschirmjäger”
