SS Lithuanian Division

Waffen SS wanted to form this unit in 1944? Only 3,000 men came forward. Proposal was turned down, why? Could have formed a brigade. Little info about this idea. Anyone with further info?

Lithuania was invaded by the Soviets in July 1944 so the Waffen-SS recruitment offices had to get away.

There were Lithuanians in Germany at the time. Flak gunners, labor, etc.
