PzD "Muncheberg"

#168

Post by Glynwed » 17 Sep 2003, 13:35

I found in book Druhá svìtová válka v dokumentech a fotografiích (WW II in documents and pictures), A. Šnejdárek, Praha 1968, page 355-362 answers of General der Artillerie Helmuth Weidling for questions in russian captivity. There is some wiped-out:

"Our command decided, that for incoming great russians ofensive it´s impossible to hold 20.PzGrD in 1st line, and ordered relieved it by PzD "Muncheberg" by the night from 15. to 16.April".

"Having in mind, that 20.PzGrD was only partly withdraw from their positions, I ordered to form from 20.PzGrD and PzD "Muncheberg" one Kampfgruppe under command Generalmajor Mummert".

Whole article (in czech however): http://www.fronta.cz/index.php?action=2 ... 110&pods=0

P.S. Sorry for some gram errors.

Hello !

One of my grandfathers served in Panzer-Divison-Muencheberg, and now i search for informations about his unit. He told me, that he served in one of the two Panzergrenadier-Regiments.
Can someone describe exact, relatively short, employment process of the division (completely particularly the two armored infantry regiments) to me? It is possible, that one of the two armored infantry regiments was at the beginning still in Frankfurt/Oder encircled, then broke out to Berlin where it pierced itself for the second time broke out later?

Please excuse my School-English :)

I know that Horst Zobel has been named several times in this forum. But here you can find a pic and (I hope) more info about him (in german):
http://www.ritterkreuztraeger-1939-45.d ... -Horst.htm
Please, could somebody translate this?
Best regards.

Werderwayne wrote:I am surprised that no one has mentioned Le Tissier’s book “With Our Backs to Berlin.” In it, Horst Zobel, the commander of the 1st Battalion of Panzer-Regiment Müncheberg describes the events of March 22 and 23, 1945. Not only is the description eye opening, but also there is the best map of the Gorgast-Golzow area I have ever seen, and I have been looking for years. Unfortunately, the area around Tucheband is not on the map. He has no order of battle and doesn’t tell what kind of Tigers he had, although it is implied that they never had Tiger II’s near Golzow. He and the rest of his staff seemed to have had Panthers. He had a Tiger “squadron” (company) (the 3rd company) in his battalion, no telling how many tanks in the company. His 2nd company was a mix of Pz IV’s and “self propelled guns.” The first company had Panthers and was in the Tucheband area. Their actions of the 22/23 of March were not mentioned.

The description contradicts “Small Unit Actions During the German Campaign in Russia” in a number of ways. Come to think of it, I haven’t heard “Small Unit Actions During the German Campaign in Russia” quoted on this board, either.

Because of the actions of the efforts of Panzer-Regiment Müncheberg on 22 March 1945, the Soviets lost 59 tanks shot up and burning, some others immobilized. Müncheberg lost no vehicles and suffered only two wounded. The German infantry, however, was decimated, losing an entire battalion in one case.

I got “With Our Backs to Berlin” from Amazon.

I hope this helps.

Any idea who was the commander of the third (Tiger) company of Zobel's battalion?

What kind of outfit was "Wachtregiment 'Berlin'"? Is it related to the Grossdeutschland sphere in some way?

Wachregiment Grossdeutschland Berlin's actual relationship to Muncheberg still seems to be an issue of debate.

Spaeter's "The History of the Panzerkorps Grossdeutschland" Vol. 3, doesn't mention any subordination of this unit to Muncheberg--but things get a little confused at this time in the war! :D :D :D

Hello,

I am new to this Forum and interested in Panzerregiment Muencheberg. Has the article that was announced in 2004, based on all the information already collected, ever been written? If so, where can I obtain it?

Best regards,

Dirk Jan
