Well, hello Kamen. I must say that yours is one of the finest posts it's ever been my honor to read. Since I am incapable of properly praising your post, please allow me these few lines in your honor:

Magnificent it is
That the deeds of men
Stored and shelved in dust
Upon Sharing become
Petals of a flower, bright
In beauty and luster

I know, poetry isn't my strong suit, but that was one helluva post.
Very Best Regards, David 8O

Thanks Kamen.

My main question about the info you provided:
is this a description of the "ideal situation" when orders were given for the formation of this division, because in that case this division on paper could be way to strong compared to its actual strenght, especially in those last months of the war.

Regards,
Timo

Here's what I make of it for the moment, using info from this thread. I took the liberty to check the given KstN numbers and corrected some (example: 1126 was not for FlaK, but 1128 was). Andditional info is still most welcome as this day-by-day-account is far from complete!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoy...

Formation of Panzer-Division "Müncheberg"

05.03.1945
Panzer Division "Müncheberg" is formed on 05.03.1945. Generalmajor d.Reserve Werner Mummert, until then commander of Panzer-Brigade 103, is assigned to lead the new division. He brings with him the stab from his old Brigade to form the stab for "Müncheberg". The units which were to be raised for the Divisionsstab are the Divisionskommando, Begleitkompanie "Müncheberg", Kartenstelle d.Division "Müncheberg" and Feldgendarmetrupp "Müncheberg"

The formation of the Divisionskommando followed KstN 51 (01.07.1944). The Ia section was created on 05.03.1945 from Kommando/Panzer-Brigade 103. Ia (Adjutant) in Mummert's Stab is Major Thoma.

The initial orders (05 and 06.03.1945) state that Panzer-Abteilung "Müncheberg" is to be created from Panzer-Abteilung "Kummersdorf" and I./Panzer-Regiment 29. The new Abteilung is to have a Stab, a Stabskompanie, 1.Panzerkompanie (Tiger), 2. Panzerkompanie (Panther), 3.(gem.) Panzerkompanie (Pz.IV) and a Versorgungskompanie (mot.).

Formation of Panzergrenadier-Regiment "Müncheberg" 1 and Panzergrenadier-Regiment "Müncheberg" 2, both with a Stab, a I. and a II.Batallion starts this same day.

Panzer-Artillerie-Regiment "Müncheberg" is also created on 05.03.1945 and it is formed with a Stab, a I.(Art.)Abteilung and

This Abteilung was only tactically subordinated to the division and was never an organic part of Panzer-Division "Müncheberg". On the same day an order is issued for withdrawal of Panzer-Abteilung "Kummersdorf" for reorganization in the Hoppengarten area.

Also on 08.03.1945 an order is issued for the transfer of an Aufklärungskompanie (VW) from Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung "Sternberg" (10. Panzer-Division) to Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" to form Panzer-Aufklärungs-Kompanie "Müncheberg"

10.03.1945

Absorbing remnants from other units, Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" is reported having 13 Tigers of which ten were operational on 15 April 1945.

16.04.1945
On 16.04.1945 Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" is reported to have the following strength: 3 Pz.IV, 31 Panther, 1 Hetzer, 3 Flakpanzer, 12 8.8cm s.Pak (mot Z). This same day an order is issued for the utilization of the personnel of 3./Panzer-Regiment 26 in to the division. This company was a part of 26. Panzer-Division and was sent to Germany from Italy in March 1945 to be equipped with night-vision devices. After this reorganization failed its personnel was sent to Panzer-Division "Müncheberg".

From 16.04.1945 on Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" sees non-stop action east of Berlin.

18.04.1945
On 18.04.1945 reported losses of Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" are 14 Panthers and 5 Tigers as total
write-offs for the time period 14.04 to 17.04.1945.

20.04.1945
The commander of the Panzer-Abteilung, Hauptmann Horst Zobel, is promoted to Major.

24.04.1945
Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" has occupied positions in the northeastern quadrant of Berlin, north of the Spree River, with Nordland to its right and 9th Fallschirm to its left. At this point the division has about a dozen tanks and 30 SPWs left.

25.04.1945
The frantic reorganization of the city's defences during the night Of 24 to 25.04 add to the confusion and to the pressure on officers like Wöhlermann. To allow Weidling to concentrate on his overall responsibilities as city commandant, Major-General Werner] Mummert, commander of Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" , is ordered to take over the eastern defense sectors A and B, and is given nominal charge of the LVI. Korps. Weidling takes with him his chief of staff, Colonel Theodor von Dufving, to look after the military side of his assignment, but keeps Reymann's former chief of staff, Colonel Hans Refior, to handle the civil side, including dealing with Goebbels and the party. Wöhlermann is asked to take command of Panzer-Division "Müncheberg", while still remaining in overall charge of artillery. All through the night, Weidling and his senior officers struggle to make some sort of sense of the shambles that had been forced upon them.

26.04.1945
Nordland and "Müncheberg" are ordered by Weidling to launch a counterattack to clean up dangerous penetrations at Tempelhof Airfield and in Neukolln. During the morning of 26.04.1945 "Müncheberg" attacks southward from the northwest end of the Tempelhof Airfield with its last ten tanks, but the attack soon comes to a halt due to Russian defensive fire. Weidling's command structure was changed yet again During that morning, on another of Hitler's whims. This time, however, the change was for the good. Hitler had promoted Lieutenant-Colonel Erich Bärenfinger, who had acted briefly as his deputy during the one day he had personal command of the Berlin defences before appointing Weidling. The thirty-year-old Bärenfinger, a holder of the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords and a keen member of the SA since 1933, was now a major-general, and is given command of defence sectors A and B. This means that Mummert can return to Panzer-Division "Müncheberg", releasing Wöhlermann to concentrate on his job as artillery commander. For Weidling, this is a great improvement. For the men of the Müncheberg Division, experiencing their third change of command in little more than twenty-four hours, it merely adds to their total bewilderment.

27.04.1945
The major portion of Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" is enicircled in Berlin since 25.04.1945. The II.Abteilung of its Panzer-Regiment (the former I./Panzer-Regiment 29), or the major part of it, manages to escape and on 27.04.1945 it is reported that the remains of the Abteilung are in the area of Neurippin. On the same day an order is issued for the utilization of the Panzer Werkstattkompanie of the Abteilung with the 7. Panzer-Division and the 25. Panzergrenadier-Division. The remaining elements of the Abteilung are to be incorporated in to the 24. Panzer-Division, which remaining elements had recently retreated from East Prussia to Schleswig-Holstein.

Thanks Kamen,

I have used this info for the 1.2 version of the day-by-day :)

It does however raise a question:

12.03.1945 - Panzer-Division "Müncheberg" reports a total strength of 6836 men, which is close to the divisions authorized strength

17.03.1945 - The divisional strength is given as 2,867 men.

This is strange, what explains the extreme difference between these figures?

Cheers,
Timo

Hallo Kamen,

The lower figure comes from a message earlier in this thread. Could you post those seperate figures here?

Cheers,
Timo
