Hello all, looking at my copy of Panzers in Berlin 1945 i was checking vehicle allocation lists and i see the AA11 was issued 6 sdkfz 251/2 (8cm mortar)and 4 sdkfz 251/17,i cant work out where these vehicles are in a type 43 recon unit as i see 6 sdkfz 250/7 (8cm mortar), can anyone help and is there any more info about these vehicles.

The SdKfz 251/2 would have been issued in place of the SdKfz 250/7 mortar carriers. The SdKfz 251/17 could well have been issued in place of any SdKfz 250/10 that the unit should have had.

Hello Alan, there s photo s showing that they recevied 6 250/7 mortar carriers as well as the 251/2, as well as photo s of 250/10. i dont think these were issued in place of, that s the problem. Just in case your interested there s some good research been done about Nordlands time in Croatia, it athttps://www.researchgate.net/publication/317040 ... utumn_1943.

So are you saying that just because they already had 250/7 that they couldn't receive replacements for damaged/destroyed vehicles ? The same would go for the 251/17.

Hello Alan,im under the impression that they only ever had one issue of vehicles and that was it, although ive not seen the 251 issue list, only the one for the 250, and im pretty sure they did not get any replacements.

Going back to your original question. What date were the 251's issued ? ll of the division's 250's were issued in November / December 1943.

I found a list of Sdkfz 251 deliveries for November and December 1943, and it looks like Nordland received 1 x Sdkfz 251 in November but 0 in December.

You said in your first post that you had checked the allocation lists, did you mean in the book ?

Hello,

I'm in agreement with Georg's assessment. Erlewein served only for a short time with SS-Pz.A.A.11, from the summer of 1943 until being wouded in a motorcycle accident on 8 February 1944. While he could have written a lot more about the training and actions in 1943, as well as the actions in January 1944, for one reason or the other he chose not to. Consequently the part concerning the battalion is extremely short and a very big dissapointment.

Best regards
