Infanterie-Division Scharnhorst

Hi Marcus.

Regarding the vehicles I just found this in the formation order from OKH:
"c) Material:
This means the vehicles came from the various schools and from confiscated private vehicles. This would mean a mixture of obsolete, foreign equipment I guess.

Hello,

A few things which can be of some interest:

The 11/04/45, the StuG-abteilung 1170 was attached to the Scharnhorst near Lindeau, close to Zerbst. It worked in cooperation with the "Langmaier" Regiment (1."Scharnhorst" Regiment). This regiment fought against the 83th US Infantry Divison and Combat Command « R » while they tried to expend their bridgheads across the Elbe, near Barby. Fight goes on from the 13th to the 17th. Afterward, the StuG-Abt came under the 12.AOK command while it switch to East Front, "Scharnhorst" included.

A detailled report of the action of the 83th US Division in Barby's area can be found here:

http://www.army.mil/cmh-pg/documents/elbe-ch5.htm

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sturmgeschutz-abteilung 1170 (Build-up from men of the StuG-Brigade 322 and 249)

Commandant: Hauptmann Böhmen ?

Adjudant : Oberleutnant Poullain

1./ (Ex-StuG Brigade 322) - Oberleutnant Luft ( Hauptmann Franke ? )
1-Leutnant Kaunert
2-Leutnant Putzig

2./ Hauptmann Handtke

3./

4./ (Begleit) Build up from men the Sturmgeschutz-Brigade 278.

Shipments:

06/04/45= 19 StuG

06/04/45= 12 StuH

According to Ron Klages posts on the Missing-lynx.com forum. So it seems that the abteilung was at full strenght when attached to the "Scharnhorst."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furthermore, the "Scharnhorst" was supposed to received 10 JagPz 38 (t), sent on the 08/04/45. I don't know if those reached the division.

Antony Beevor's book Berlin the Downfall mentioned that infanterie division Scharnhorst, Theodore Kollner, Ulrich von Hutten were under the Twelfth Army under General Walther Wenck and were involved in the operation to open a corridor for General Theodore Busse's Ninth Army to escape from the Russians
