Hi Peter,

Char. Oberstleutnant Josef Bischoff has a biography in volume 1 of Biblio Verlag's Die Ritter des Ordens Pour le Mérite from which here is a summary:

In 1909 he was appointed as a company commander in Infantry Regiment 112 and in 1911 as a company commander in Infantry Regiment 166. Promoted to Major on the 1 October 1913, at mobilisation he was appointed as the battalion commander of III./Reserve Infantry Regiment 60. In March 1916 he became commander of the 1st Turkish Camel Regiment followed by an assignment to the Replacement Battalion of Infantry Regiment 60. On the 2 January 1917 he was appointed Regimental Commander of Infantry Regiment 461 where he won his PLM on the 30 June 1918 for the defence of Belleau Wood in early June 1918. He commanded the Iron Brigade/Division from 16 Jan 1919 until going on leave in October 1919 and retirement in 1920. Finally we managed to buy a copy of Bischoff's Book "Die letzte Front" for an acceptable price.

It is really worth reading if you are interested in the fightings in the Baltikum post WW1, and gives a good insight in the motivations of the various forces with german contribution that had fought there.

Horrido!

Is there anything on Bischoff's time with the Ottomans in the Arabian peninsula?
