High Scorers with Panzers and Paks

Post by Ron Klages » 06 Feb 2005 22:37

To all,

This is a redo of an older thread on the forum that listed Panzer Aces. I have revised the list to be alphabetical and have added additional individuals. I also feel it would be far better to title it as Tank Killers or Panzer Killers rather than use the word ACE. This term was associated with combat in the air and as a result it is hard to find details on individuals and their scores for ground or sea operations.

The other consideration is the addition of other high scorers as well as high scores in single engagements that usually resulted in the award of a KC to this listing.

Marcus has offered to make this a sticky so this would be an excellent opportunity to add, correct, modify and embellish to the list below. We all read and as we come across data on this subject, this would be the opportunity to share with others.

Have at it.
Best regards to all,
Ron Klages

Giese, Hans / Horst - 58 kills (Pz.Abt. 5)
combat and career details : (by Gastolli)
you can blow up his score by looking into the RK-recommendation from 27.03.45 by Pz.Abt. 5 (Fhr., Hptm. Schmid) - Bundesarchiv (RH 7/278):

The achievment (in short):
Served just for a few weeks as Kompanie-Führer with Pz.Abt. 5. On evening of 22.03.1945 during counter-attack on Railstation Golzow destroyed 3 tanks. On 23.03.1945 from 06.30h to 10.00h south of Railstation Golzow destroyed 15 tanks out of an russian "Panzerrudel", until the evening he had scored 19 tanks. On 24.03.1945 with 2 tanks night-attack against Gorgast, during retreat remaind in position as the last vehicle, despite being wounded. Total score for Lt. Giese was 2 SU-76, 13 T43 and 4 Josef Stalin.

awards until that date:
EK2 21.05.40 / EK1 06.09.41 / DKiG 22.09.44 / Ostmed. 15.08.42 / VA schwarz 20.09.44 / PzKpfAbz. II 15.12.44

his career:
up to 01.03.40 Bekleidungs-Feldwebel with Pz.Jg.Lehr.Abt. Wünsdorf / up to 01.06.43 Zugf. with Pz.Abt. 90 (I'm sure they mean Pz.Jg.Abt. 90 ???) / up to 01.05.44 Ausbildungs-Offizier with Pz.Jg.E.u.A.Abt. 1 / up to 15.11.44 Zugf. Pz.Brig. 2101 / up to 26.01.45 Zugf. in II./Pz.Rgt. 21 / up to 12.02.45 Kp.Fhr. Lehrgang Bergen / since 13.02.45 Kp.-Fhr. 2./Pz.Abt. 5

A N D, most important for this thread:
according to message from AOK 9 from 10.04.1945: Lt. Giese is wounded, total score until now 58 tanks according to commander of Pz.Abt. 5 (Gesamtabschüsse bisher 58 Panzer lt. Auskunft Kommandeur Pz.Abt. 5).

You can see, that his PANZER-career actually was a short one (just one year, 05.1944 to 05.1945) !

They must have been absolutely amazing men to accomplish so much for Germany.

Michael Wittman obtained 138 kills in a Tiger I.
Otto Carius obtained 150+, also in a Tiger I.
Kurt Knispel obtained 168 kills.

Nothing amazing about having a tank that overpowers anything the Allies can throw against it.

im in a bit of agreement about the skill level of these men. they faught in some of the most hotly contested front line actions and to come out of it with such a kill ratio shows situational awareness and tactical choice above a normal persons training and ability.

Michael wittman for example was outnumbered in the villers bocage battle and still faught above & beyond the norm. Taking out single handedly 27 enemy tanks out of the 30 destroyed.

Check out the battle here :
http://www.panzerace.net/english/pz_boc.asp

The one other point i would like to make is that the tank crews were for the most part ( mostly in the earlier part of the war ) were hand picked by the tank commander and trained together. Espescially in the SS divisions where brotherhood and teamwork were highly promoted. So the tank crews were to my mind as responsible for the kills as the tank commander.

These Men were very skilled Tank Commanders! Most of them started their careers in the early stages of the war.. and were given a numerous amount of different tanks as the war went on such as Stugs, panzer 4's, Panthers and Tigers etc. this means that these Commanders and crews had to adapt to new techniques and fighting strategies becuase every tank has its strength and weakness in different areas!. Plus most German tanks on the western and Eastern Fronts were almost always out numbered in battles and for those of you who say that the German tanks were "SO SUPERIOR TO ANY ALLIED TANKS" thats not the case!! its all about the crews operating these beasts! LETS SAY I WOULD PUT YOU IN IRAQ IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT WITH 1 U.S M1A2 ABRAM TANK vs 10 IRAQI T-72's i would like to see how long you would last!!! and dont think this scenario is unfair, Because this is how it was for most German crews fighting during the war

exactly take the Tiger 1 tank. it was primarily designed to take on the russian armour threat on the open ground eastern front. thats why the heavy armour and the 88mm cannon. transpose that tank to the western front and its hedgrow regions of normandy and it was unsuited. Yet still in the hands of skilled crews it was lethal.

Rommels first use of the 88 in the Anti-Tank role was at Arras on 21st May 1940 after being counter attacked & taking a mauling by 2 British 'Matilda' Tank Regiments of the British 1st Tank Brigade.

Can anyone confirm if these were the 10 prototype 8.8cm Flak18(Sfl) auf Zugkraftwagen 12t (Sd Kfz 8) used in France by the 8th Schwere Panzerjager abteilung?

I also aggree with some of the other Forum members, it was skill & training on the part of the Panzer Crews, we all know how cantankerous & prone to breakdowns Panzers can be, especially Tigers.
IIRC Wittmann on July 12 1941 in a Stug III ausf A in a battle near Moszkove destroyed 6 T34-76.

There were plenty of tanks that could kill Tigers and Panthers....especially later in the war. It was an up-gunned Sherman (Firefly) that took out Wittmann. As stated above by another, in the close in fighting in the west, the larger guns of some of the German tanks was negated by shear numbers of allied vehicles and close-in firing.

Schrijnen, Richard destroyed 7 tanks in 1 engagement with a PaK40
4 T-34 and 3 Josef Stalins ( I think... )

He earned Knights Cross for it
