Re: High Scorers with Panzers and Paks
Hi Antonio,
good, totally new entry for me

Sounds like he had 10 tank kills in March 1943 (no specific date, most probably during several days of heavy combat) and during one action he collected 20 men for a successful counter-attack.
Anyway, added to the list!
Sidenote: Georg Straube was promoted to Leutnant with RDA 1.7.1944 and was the Ordonanz-Offizier of Pz.Jg.Abt. 18 in April 1945.

I have a newspaper clipping where we read that Leutnant Sommerfeld with his Sturmgeschutz destroyed 3 panzers, 2 Self-Propelled and 5 paks.???
(from what I understood).
Leutnant Karl-Heinz Sommerfeld -1./ Heeres-Panzerjäger-Abteilung 731 - DKiG on 7 December 1944.
At the bottom of the article Feldwebel Schenk is mentioned as destroying 1 Stalinpanzer, his 14th enemy tanks.
He is Feldwebel Robert Schenk - Panzerjäger-Kompanie 1024 -EBS in 1945.
I'm sure because I had an old note, that on 20 Mar 45 a JS tank was destroyed by the FW. Schenk

Re: High Scorers with Panzers and Paks
Hello Antonio,
well ..., not exactly. Would have been nice to see some details on an Hetzer man, but no, Leutnant "Sommerfeld" also was from Jgd.Pz.Kp. 1024 like Feldwebel Schenk.
This is Leutnant d.Res. Ernst-August Sonnefeld, Zugführer from Jagdpanzer-Kompanie 1024 of 24. Inf.Div.
He got the EK1 in February 1945 already and was wounded on day after this action, on 4.3.1945.
You can credit him with one Sturmgeschütz and one Bergepanzer (described in the article), while the company score was 14 tanks and at least 5 Pak within two days. Lt. Sonnefeld might have had more tank kills these two days, but they are not described.
He may have survived WW2, as I can't find him in Volksbund database.

Re: High Scorers with Panzers and Paks
Hello Antonio,
ah, unfortunately not his 14th tank kill. The article says, that Jagdpanzer-Kompanie 1024 destroyed 14 enemy tanks within two days, that's all.
Fw. Schenk could have more tank kills to his credit of course, but we don't know yet.
The Ehrenblattspange was for action on 18.2.1945 at Viksninas, and naturally he got his EK1 prior to that. And the action described in this newspaper was on 3.3.1945. Fw. Schenk is mentioned with just one sentence in the history of 24. Inf.Div., destroying one Stalin tank that day.
Lt.d.R. Sonnefeld was wounded on 4.3.1945, so I'm pretty sure we have the date fixed for this newspaper article

as always.
I found a newspaper clipping that talks about Hauptmann Schering's Panzerjagerkompanie, which destroyed 26 enemy tanks in 2 days.
On the first day it destroyed 21 enemy tanks, of which 11 by the 2 Sturmgeschutz of the Leutnant Gebauer and the Feldwebel Liedtke.
The next day, 5 enemy tanks were destroyed, including 3 from the Feldwebel Liedtke.
I don't know the department.
(I hope I got it right this time)
PS; in the same clipping there are 2 articles concerning, one the Feldwebel Otto Feibicke-EBS in 5./Pz.Rgt 29, and the other the Leutnant Werner Sallermann - DKiG in 5./Pz.Rgt 29.
Unfortunately there are no details of destroyed tanks.

Re: High Scorers with Panzers and Paks
Hello Antonio,
well, Panzer not always fought against enemy tanks, but also against infantry ...

Werner Sallermann died on 20.2.1945 (got the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 28.2.1945), while Otto Feibicke got his Ehrenblattspange for action on 21.2.1945 "im Einbruchsraum Spirgus/Lettland", he's not in the Volksbund Database.

Hi Antonio,
this was Hauptmann d.Res. Hans Schering, Chef of 2./Pz.Jg.Abt. 2 (12. Pz.Div.), equipped with Jagdpanzer IV.
Zugführer Leutnant d.Res. Günter Gebauer, which fell in December 1944, January 1945 (no exact date on Volksbund database)
Unfortunately, I have no forename yet for Feldwebel Liedtke.

Re: High Scorers with Panzers and Paks
Hello Antonio,
I know his number already (I think from Korps files ?), but it's another example that the Jagdpanzer IV could have been used successfully

The curious thing with Leutnant von Veltheim is:
1) this success here also was reported in the "Wehrmachtsbericht" from 17.8.1944 (mit seinem Zug ausgezeichnet, nordwestlich Bialystok). From archival sources I knew that this was in the period 10. - 13.8.1944, and the mentioned success against soviet armour should have been on 10.8.1944 (at least 19 tank kills reported by Pz.Jg.Abt. 2).
2) his mention in the "Ehrenblatt" was for a "Tat am 20.08.44 bei Snikeres", so AFTER this newspaper article was written! So far I haven't looked further into the operations that day/that area, to know what happened exactly.
