I would like to add more about Oskar Schäfer
In many Panzeraces lists he is credited with 50 tank kills, while in an article found some time ago he tells me that he only had 29 panzerabschuss.

I just have added some names including those before the Berlin fightings.

I'm not so sure on the numbers claimed of course, also it depends on which book you read who is mentioned or not ...

Was trawling through some records from Heeresgruppe Mitte and found some new names. First we have Leutnant Veise, Chef 1./Stu.Gesch.Abt. 904. He destroyed 6 tanks on the 1.9.1943, thereby raising his total of destroyed tanks to 42.

On the 4.8.1944 the Stu.Gesch.Brig. 232 destroyed 40 tanks. Of these, Oberleutnant Schütte's 3. Batterie destroyed 31 tanks with just 5 Sturmgeschütze. 2 of these Sturmgeschütz commanders particularly distinguished themselves in this action, specifically:

Wachtmeister Zyrn - 10 tanks destroyed
Wachtmeister Freissner - 9 tanks destroyed

Hello Evan,

that should be Leutnant d. Res. Walter Beise. He is listed as Chef 2./Stug.Abt. 904 while getting the "Deutsches Kreuz in Gold" on 25.10.1943, but there also was an Oblt. Knaup in this battery so I think 2./904 is just a mistake and should be read as 1./904.

At least the name is similar enough for me to be sure it's him.

He got both EK2 and EK1 as an Unteroffizier with Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 197 in 1941.

Hello Evan,

o.k., here we have:

Oblt. d.R. Friedrich Schütte (Ehrenblatt 15.8.1944, Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 30.8.1944)
Owm. August Zürn (EK1 on 19.9.1943 already, but no higher award)
Wm. Ludwig Reißner (EK1 on 17.7.1944 already, no higher award)

None of those three man appears on the Volksbund Kriegsgräber database.

I see he’s already been mentioned on this thread a few times. Good grief, these spelling mistakes/typos can be a real headache.

Thanks Oliver for the additions.

Leutnant Gerhard Glöckner, 4./Pz.Abt.21 - + 9 panzerkills
With his company he destroyed 30 enemy tanks, of which 9 were destroyed by him.
I think you're referring to the Ehrenblatt action.
Since he also had the German Cross in Gold, I believe he achieved other victories.

Leutnant Gerhard Glöckner, 4./Pz.Abt.21 - + 9 panzerkills
Hello Antonio,

another nice find, thank you!

So, well, it's not that easy as it sounds:
Lt.d.R. Glöckner got the Ehrenblattspange for actions on 27.7.1943 at Wetrowo (originally an recommendation for the Ritterkreuz).

Here's something which makes all this a little bit complicated:

Gerhard Glöckner got the EK2 as an Gefreiter in 1941 with 9./Pz.Rgt. 21. For sure it was during his "Frontbewährung", afterwards he became an Leutnant der Reserve and went back to 20. Pz.Div. He got his EK 1 on 30.7.1943, that's three days after the action he had leading to the Ehrenblattspange.

But, o.k., recommendations for the EK also took some time, so I'm sure the EK 1 award was for action before 27.7.1943. Pz.Abt. 21 claimed to be highly successful against soviet armour from 5.7.1943 onwards, with over 300 tank kills claimed until September 1943 or so.

The diary of Pz.Abt. 21 told us that Lt.d.R. Glöckner returned from leave to this company just on 24.7.1943, amidst the battles in the Orel sector, so he had very, very little time to perform his EK 1 action!

This all makes him very interesting, indeed :-)

So, here are some facts from the KTB of Pz.Abt. 21 (BA/MA RH 39/366), which unfortunately doesn't include the enclosures to the war diary and is very similar to the unit history from Wolfgang Straub "Panzerregiment 21 im Ostfeldzug".

My guess, in this case:

23.7.1943
The Abteilung claimed 1 T70 and later 3 T34 destroyed, which were tank kills No. 95 - 98 since 5.7.1943.
Oblt. Dr. Glauner, Chef of 4./Pz.Abt. 21, wounded. Temporarily in command Oberfeldwebel Kohla.

24.7.1943
Lt.d.R. Glöckner returns from leave and took over as Führer of 4./Pz.Abt. 21. The Abteilung in security positions to the north-west of Wetrowo.
In the evening the Abteilung was relocated to Wetrowsky area, with the 4./Pz.Abt. 21 remaining in the position at Wetrowo.

25.7.1943
Pz.Abt. 21 was not employed, used the time for maintenance etc.

26.7.1943
8 a.m. Lt. Glöckner reports approx. 50 attacking soviet tanks.
The rest of Pz.Abt. 21 also was activated ...
Within short time 32 of the 50 tanks were destroyed, with the major part of them by 4. Kompanie (Glöckner).
Sidenote: this days performance includes the 143rd tank kill by Pz.Abt. 21 since 5.7.1943, with the 100. tank kill credited to Ofw. Kohla.
As the last kills were reported on 23.7.1943 it means that Pz.Abt. 21 had 45 tank kills in total on 26.7.1943.

27.7.1943
Pz.Abt. 21 took positions east of Wetrowo, with 4. Kompanie still to the west of Wetrowo.
At 11.30 a.m. an soviet attack was repelled with 5 T34 destroyed. The 4./Pz.Abt. 21 turned right and attacked the soviet infantry from the flank.
At 12.30 a.m. two additional tanks were destroyed, and at 2.45 p.m. another one.
At 3 p.m. the 4./Pz.Abt. 21 was in security position on the southern corner of Wetrowo, shortly after conducted an counter-attack against soviet infantry.
At 3.45 p.m. the soviet forces attacked Schemjakino (here: 3./Pz.Abt. 21, Lt.d.R. Fahrbach) with 13 tanks destroyed by 3. Kompanie. This was reported by Abtlg.Kdr. Darius as the 170th tank kill since 5.7.1943.
at 8.45 p.m. another soviet attack with approx. 50 tanks, of which 12 tanks were claimed to be destroyed by Pz.Abt. 21.
Sidenote: this means 182 tank kills for Pz.Abt. 21 since 5.7.1943, so with 143 tank kills until 26.7.1943 we have 39 tank kills on 27.7.1943.

28.7.1943
Pz.Abt. 21 was deployed to the south-east of Wetrowo, with approx. 45 soviet tanks in sight at dusk.
At 9 a.m. Pz.Abt. 21 destroyed 9 out of approx. 25 attacking tanks, while the others were destroyed by Pz.Abt. Hptm. Bauer, so Pz.Abt. 21 reported the 191. tank kill since 5.7.1943.
At 12.00 a.m. Pz.Abt. 21 attacked hill 233,0 and caused heavy losses to the soviet infantry.
At 4 p.m. 3 out of 4 attacking T 70 were destroyed.
Shortly after 8 p.m. Pz.Abt. 21 began to retreat from the current position, about 50 soviet tanks together with trucks with infantry attacked from the direction of Stolbtscheje going across hill 233,0. Just two tanks of 4. Kompanie (Lt.d.R. Glöckner) remain on safty position, these together with some of the rear tanks from retreating Pz.Abt. 21 destroyed 20 tanks.
Sidenote: Pz.Abt. Bauer was I./Pz.Rgt. 33 (Hptm. Friedrich Bauer) who got the Ritterkreuz for this action!

So ..., the newsletter report very much sounds the action on 26.7.1943, but also 27.7.1943 is possible and I think that 26.7.1943 actions lead to the EK 1 award for Lt.d.R. Glöckner and the 27.7.1943 actions to the RK-recommendation and the award of the Ehrenblattspange (as date and place for the EBSp are clearly mentioned in Bundesarchiv files).

Another possibility could be, that Gerhard Glöckner was recommended for actions on 26./27.7.1943, while Heerespersonalamt says "just destroying 9 tanks without having the EK1 is not enough for the Ritterkreuz", and the actions on 27.7.1943, apart from many tank kills, also had an big effect on the soviet infantry, could be classified as crucial for the fights that day!?

But, I can't be sure without further detailed files at hand, so it's just a guess!

Thanks Oliver, great.

I saw there's a quote about Leutenant Fahrbach.
I have the newspaper clipping from the Ehrenblatt concession and his obituary, I think it's interesting.

Hello Antonio,

thanks for that ...

Lt.d.R. Fahrbach got the EK1 on 30.7.1943 (the same day Lt.d.R. Glöckner got it). As we can see it's for sure for the success of his company during this heavy fights against soviet armour.

And with 99 tank kills claimend by 3./Pz.Abt. 21 I'm sure he had a fair share ...

The Chef of 3./Pz.Abt. 21, Oblt. Faber, was heavily wounded on 9.7.1943, so most probably Lt.d.R. Fahrbach than took over as Führer of that company, the 99 tank kills should be counted from that date on. There also is an Oblt. Buhr from 3./Pz.Abt. 21 wounded on 2.9.1943, but it's possible that this officer just was in charge a few days ...

I know that Lt.d.R. Fahrbach previously was wounded on 4.12.1942 as an Zugführer with 9./Pz.Rgt. 21, but don't know details of his service before that.

Thanks Oliver

I found a new ace
Oberscharführer Max Spary - 21 panzerkills
Sturmgeschützführer in an SS-Panzer Regiment, in 5 consecutive days he destroyed 21 enemy tanks and 11 antitanks.
The only SS-Pz.Rgt. with the Stugs it was 5,9,10 and 11, so it should be in one of those.
I suspect the name is wrong, Spary?; I haven't found anything similar, it could be a Caspary or something.

Hello Antonio,

this indeed is an total "newbie" for all of us I would say!

And, well, my first thought also was: "typing error, should be a similar name" (and your proposal "Caspary" is a good one).

But, further digging shows a few people with the name Spary, some more with the name Spari, most of them in Austria, not Germany. So in my opinion the name Spary (Spari) could be true.

One more thing: I would not rule out an Waffen-SS Panzer-Abteilung, instead of an Panzer-Regiment. THIS still could be a possible fault by the newspaper. I'm just sure it's an Eastern Front unit.

Cheers
Oliver

Unfortunately Waffen-SS units are not my main field of research, so I can't help further. It's not because I dismiss Waffen-SS soldiers as a whole, it's just there are a lot of researchers around dealing with those units (or Fallschirmjäger or so). No need for me to do the same

Return to “Heer, Waffen-SS & Fallschirmjäger”
