The achievment (in short):
Served just for a few weeks as Kompanie-Führer with Pz.Abt. 5. On evening of 22.03.1945 during counter-attack on Railstation Golzow destroyed 3 tanks. On 23.03.1945 from 06.30h to 10.00h south of Railstation Golzow destroyed 15 tanks out of an russian "Panzerrudel", until the evening he had scored 19 tanks. On 24.03.1945 with 2 tanks night-attack against Gorgast, during retreat remaind in position as the last vehicle, despite being wounded. Total score for Lt. Giese was 2 SU-76, 13 T43 and 4 Josef Stalin.

You can see, that his PANZER-career actually was a short one (just one year, 05.1944 to 05.1945) !

A N D, most important for this thread:
according to message from AOK 9 from 10.04.1945: Lt. Giese is wounded, total score until now 58 tanks according to commander of Pz.Abt. 5 (Gesamtabschüsse bisher 58 Panzer lt. Auskunft Kommandeur Pz.Abt. 5).

Hallo Jan-Hendrik,

are you sure on that? This was also my first thought...

But most surviving award recommendations are from 1945, the therm T43 was used very often in that respect and I can't believe that the Russians have so much of T34 Mod. 1943 left those days. They will have a lot of them of course, but my thougth was that it was a "more modern" vehicle used by the russians ?
