Let's Build: 1. Infanterie Division

#1

Post by Marcus » 14 Mar 2005, 18:57

In an effort to improve and expand the unit histories on the site, we will be launching a new series of "Let's Build" threads (for an example of a history compiled based on these threads see the 102. Infanterie-Division).
The object is to pool our collective knowledge and reconstruct these units. No contribution is too small, no fact too obscure, equipment, armament, manpower strength, high award holders, biographical information, photographs, reference material or combat reports, everything is welcome, just remember to mention the source of your information.

This thread is dedicated to information on 1. Infanterie Division.

btw. as always, if you are interested in helping out with the site, for example by compiling material from the Let's Build threads for articles on the site, please send me a pm or email, thanks.

If I'm reading Tessin correctly, Each Infantary Regiment rebuilt a new 3rd battalion in 1944?

From different websites (FeldGrau, ritterkreuztrager.de):

Originally formed as the beginning of Germany's first wave of rearmament, the division was first given the title of Wehrgauleitung Königsberg, soon after having this changed to Artillerieführer I. These names were an effort to cover the expansion of infantry divisions from seven to twenty-one. The division's infantry regiments were built up from the 1.(Preussisches)Infanterie-Regiment of the 1.Division of the Reichswehr. The division's Prussian heritage is represented by the Hohenzollern coat of arms that serves as the divisional insignia. Upon the official revelation of the Wehrmacht, the unit recieved its title of 1.Infanterie-Division.

The division took part in the Polish Campaign with a major role, and the French Campaign with a more minor role. It entered Russia with Army Group North, and remained in the region of Leningrad until October 1943, when it was transferred to Army Group Centre (which was renamed Army Group North on 25 January 1945). The division fought to the end, finishing in East Prussia in 1945.

The division took part in the invasion of Poland, where it, coming from the north, attacked Polish forces from the Modlin Army (primarily the 8th and 20th infantry divisions and the Mazowiecka cavalry brigade) that had entrenched themselves around the Mlawa fortified positions. The Poles held on well in the wooded landscape and it was not until the German troops (including the 1. Infantrie-division) managed to drive a wedge between the Mazowiecka cavalry brigade and the 20th infantry division and threaten to outflank them both that the Poles, in good order, retreated southwards.

As the Panzerverband Kempf, the only mobile part of the 3. Armee that was attacking Mlawa, had been rebuffed with high casualties and the 1. Kavalleri-brigade were busy fighting the Podlaska cavalry brigade of the Narew Group, the Poles were able to retreat without being cut off, closely followed by the Germans. The 8th infantry division actually managed to retreat all the way to Warsaw - several of the German divisions that fought at Mlawa would be part of the final assault on Wasaw, but not the 1. Infantrie-division.

The “Woodrig” Korps, which included the 1. Infanterie-Division and 12. Infanterie-Division, pushed east of Warsaw where it advenced on western bank or river Bug. It encircled some polish forces which surrounded around the 14.9.1939 (which unit that was that I don't know). Any possible help here? After the surrender of the small pocket it advanced further south-east. After the campaign was over the Korps held the line on the Bug.

One more question, although it was an infantry division I was also told that it had motorised infantry regiments in 1944 - can this be proven?

From 'The German Order of Battle' book from 1944.

Repitition of the above, and less detail, but of intrest.

Commander:-Genlt. Martin GRASE (53)
Composition:- Gren. Regts. 1, 22, 43; Art. Regt. 1; Pi. Btl. 1; Pz. Jag. Abt. 1; Aufkl. Abt. 1; Nachr. Abt. 1.
Auxillery unit number:- 1.
Home station:- Insterburg (Wkr. 1).
Active division. Personnel partly East Prussian, partly from the Rhineland. Fought well in Poland, less actively engaged in France. Engaged on the Northern Russian front since June, 1941. It appears to have gained particular distinction during fighting south of Lake Ladoga in summer, 1943.

I neglected to add an interesting point of comparison. Bearing in mind that the French campaign is sometimes thought to have been an easy one for the German army, IR 43 suffered a total of 834 casualties on 15-16 May 1940 (see previous post). By comparison, in the Battle of the Huertgen Forest, and specifically between 2 -10 November 1944, 112 Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division (US army) suffered a total of 875 casualties (46 officers, 829 other ranks) in the fighting around Schmidt, as a result of which 112th Infantry Regiment was incapable of further operations.
