Originally formed as the beginning of Germany's first wave of rearmament, the division was first given the title of Wehrgauleitung Königsberg, soon after having this changed to Artillerieführer I. These names were an effort to cover the expansion of infantry divisions from seven to twenty-one. The division's infantry regiments were built up from the 1.(Preussisches)Infanterie-Regiment of the 1.Division of the Reichswehr. The division's Prussian heritage is represented by the Hohenzollern coat of arms that serves as the divisional insignia. The division took part in the invasion of Poland, where it, coming from the north, attacked Polish forces from the Modlin Army (primarily the 8th and 20th infantry divisions and the Mazowiecka cavalry brigade) that had entrenched themselves around the Mlawa fortified positions. The Poles held on well in the wooded landscape and it was not until the German troops (including the 1. Infantrie-division) managed to drive a wedge between the Mazowiecka cavalry brigade and the 20th infantry division and threaten to outflank them both that the Poles, in good order, retreated southwards.
As the Panzerverband Kempf, the only mobile part of the 3. Armee that was attacking Mlawa, had been rebuffed with high casualties and the 1. Kavalleri-brigade were busy fighting the Podlaska cavalry brigade of the Narew Group, the Poles were able to retreat without being cut off, closely followed by the Germans. The 8th infantry division actually managed to retreat all the way to Warsaw - several of the German divisions that fought at Mlawa would be part of the final assault on Wasaw, but not the 1. Infantrie-division.

The “Woodrig” Korps, which included the 1. Infanterie-Division and 12. Infanterie-Division, pushed east of Warsaw where it advenced on western bank or river Bug. It encircled some polish forces which surrounded around the 14.9.1939 (which unit that was that I don't know). Any possible help here? After the surrender of the small pocket it advanced further south-east. After the campaign was over the Korps held the line on the Bug.
One more question, although it was an infantry division I was also told that it had motorised infantry regiments in 1944 - can this be proven?

they had 3 Regts of 3 battalions. ( Sept 1940 the 3rd battalion of each regt was taken away to form 121 Inf div. )
Sept 1940 they created 3 new Battalions.
Sept 1940 - May 1942
they had 3 Regts of 3 battalions. ( May 1942 the 3rd batl of each regt was disbanded. )
May 1942 - Aug 1944
they had 3 Regts of 2 battalions. ( Aug 1944 they were ordered to form 3 new battalions )
Aug 1944 till end

In 1942-1943 the division was assigned with 7th and 8th Sound Raging Troops. The Panzerjager battalion contained Stug and a 20mm Flak company. All of the Pioneer companies were horse-drawn and the Feldersatz battalion had 3 companies.

On 8 November 1944 the Panzerjager was directed to contain a Heavy Panzerjager Company (motZ), a Sturmgeschutz Detachment and a (motZ) Flak with 20mm Flak Guns. The grenadier regiments were ordered to form 3 battalions each. The Reconnaissance Battalion was rebuilt using Lehr Reconnaissance Battalion.

I neglected to add an interesting point of comparison. Bearing in mind that the French campaign is sometimes thought to have been an easy one for the German army, IR 43 suffered a total of 834 casualties on 15-16 May 1940 (see previous post). By comparison, in the Battle of the Huertgen Forest, and specifically between 2 -10 November 1944, 112 Infantry Regiment, 28th Infantry Division (US army) suffered a total of 875 casualties (46 officers, 829 other ranks) in the fighting around Schmidt, as a result of which 112th Infantry Regiment was incapable of further operations.
