Is this the same Major Burckhardt that commanded the short stayed Fallschirmjäger-Kampfgruppe that arrived in North Africa in January 1942,left March 1942?
Kampfgruppe Burckhardt totalled 614 men of the Fallschirmjäger-Lehr-Bataillion.Their departure back to Germany at the end of March was by Ju 52s,first to Maleme,Crete then to Taranto,Italy, then by rail back home.

Hauptmann Burckhardt commanded the II./FJR 1 at Crete, then from early 1942 the Fallsch.-Lehr-Bataillon at Berlin-Döberitz.
A photo I have of Burckhardt taken in Africa in early 1942, but with back to camera, looks very much like the officer in the photo above. Lanky, slim etc, aged in his 30s.
The makeshift Luftwaffen-Jägerregiment that arrived in Tunisia in November 1942 was under Oberst Walter Barenthin.

Re: Luftwaffen-Jäger-Brigade
Hello,
I may be a bit late to join this discussion but:
Major Walter Burckhardt was taken PoW by elements of the 1st Household Cavalry Regiment on Nov 5th, 1942 in the region of Fuka, 110 kilometers west of El Alamein. Burckhardt managed to retreat with his battalion from El Alamein to the planned next line of resistance at Fuka but there they were encircled by British armoured cars and surrendered (Neitzel, 2007, p.68; Stimpel; 1998, p.58; Carell, p.347; Wyndham, 1952, p.86).
Since Burckhardt was in British custody already since November 1942 he cannot have been in Luftwaffen-Jäger-Brigade 1.
And the last part of Larry's notes for him (promotion to Oberst, desk job in Berlin) must be someone else.

Well,
Best regards
Torsten
perhaps I jumped a bit too fast to this conclusion. This site http://www.deutsches-afrika-korps.de/vi ... 17d#p17075 says with reference to Stimpel (1998, p.24) that the term Luftwaffen-Jäger-Brigade 1 was used already since late September 1942 in documents of the Afrika-Korps. This would mean that the redesignation took place much earlier than you find in most sources that say it happened in Tunisia in 1943. So Major Burckhardt would actually have been a member of said unit indeed.Heimatschuss wrote: Since Burckhardt was in British custody already since November 1942 he cannot have been in Luftwaffen-Jäger-Brigade 1.

Here is what I have on Gruppe Burckhardt in early 1942. Does anyone know what happened with him after the war?
