Many thanks for that, very interesting.G. Trifkovic wrote:Hi all,
just found this and thought it would be an interesting share: Mirko Tepavac, political commissar of the 3rd Vojvodina Brigade and 36th Vojvodina Division of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army (and Yugoslav foreign minister from 1969-1972) wrote the following on the "Prinz Eugen":
Mirko Tepavac, Moj Drugi svjetski rat i mir: o ratu posle rata-autobiografski zapisi (Zagreb: Razlog, 2012, pp. 147-8).It was the only German unit which fought both during day and night (like us), carried weapons and supplies on its back or on horses (like us) and spoke Serbian-almost like us! Happily, they were late in realizing how advantageous all this could be [I presume this refers to the "Freie Jagd" concept devised by Phleps and used to a certain extent only during 1944- G.T.].
When we face each other without knowing whether friend or foe is on the opposite hill and when we are ready to either embrace or kill each other, we yell: who goes there? Instead of an answer we hear in Serbian: and who goes there? After several such exchanges, we decide to identify ourselves: here are the men of Vojvodina!, only to hear "Here are also men of Vojvodina!" in response.
Only when weapons start to roar it becomes apparent that we are two entirely different types of Vojvodina men [...] Only one of these two armies would return to Vojvodina and it wouldn't be them! Until then, both armies lost many of their members here, but they lost the war and Vojvodina as well.
Only and nothing but bad memories remained!
Cheers,
G.
This remind me some weird stuff I've been told by people involved in the Balkan wars in 1992-1997, 50 years later but same crazy stuff.

Any ideas why would any of "Prinz Eugen" men be in Vienna (probably mid-1943)? (all together with dogs)

What are you referring at, Ivan? Or is this only a different question?Ivan Ž. wrote:Any ideas why would any of "Prinz Eugen" men be in Vienna (probably mid-1943)? (all together with dogs)

any chance of getting a more precise timeframe? Could it be that the photo was taken later, say October 1943?

Hardly. The problem is that the photos of KB Kemps and Kolik are a bit mixed up on NARA site, some of them are doubling (there are identical pics credited to both persons) and among these two KBs are these Vienna pics as well. So we can't say for sure if they are sorted chronologically, like most of others, and not even who actually took some of the pics (Kolik or Kemps). Some of the following photos in these two albums were taken in June 1943 (Bosnia), but since pics of these KBs might be mixed up I don't know for sure whether Vienna photos were taken before or afterwards (but probably before; and by the way, the train is a Belgrade-Vienna train).

Who is the SS-Sturmbannführer standing between Josef Schwörer (or Walter Schmidt?) and Eggert Neumann (right)? What "happy" occasion was this?

Re:
Gentlemen, the weapon that Arthur Phleps is holding in his hands is very strange indeed: it looks like a British Sten MkI but it has a vertical magazine instead of an horizontal one (protruding to the left) like it should be. Any idea about its origin? Could it be a German-made copy of the Sten?Ivan Ž. wrote:Phleps visits "Handschar" Division.
