Probably losses of 45 ID: 158 KIA, 300 WIA, 700 sick...
On 16th of September this division lost 124 KIA (including 7 officers) and hundreds of wounded (this is according to ww2 day by day and German sources given by Władysław Steblik in his book "Army Cracow").

The battle for Oleszyce lasted for two days - 15th and 16th of September. These are most probably only losses of this division from the battle of Oleszyce (158 KIA, 360 WIA):

Horst Rohde "Das Deutsche Reich und der Zweite Weltkrieg, Bd.2, Die Errichtung der Hegemonie auf dem europäischen Kontinent" (page 309). Rohde give detailed casualities of 1 Geb. Div. included 405 KIA, 918 WIA, 79 MIA, 608 sick, 647 horses (mules), 121 cars, 69 motorcycles, 72 side-car motorcycles, 678 rifles, 39 machine guns, 7 mortars, 1 light gun...
This is only another proof that statistics listed above only refer to casualties suffered by this division in the battle of Lwów (so on and after 12th of September) - not during the whole campaign in Poland:

Because on 10th of September:
In the morning the enemy tries to destroy the german bridgehead but is rejected. Polish resistance on a height at Zagorz is broken with artillery support and the division starts to pursue the enemy. Polish resistance again at 2km behind Liska. The defended bridge there is taken after short fire fight. Olszanica is taken against enemy resistance. In the evening the enemy attacks the advance column surprisingly. One 2cm is destroyed and the enemy opens fire from all sides. During the night the village is secured and cleaned.
Destroyed AA gun 20mm - there is no such kind of armament listed in the data given above.
I'm not so sure Domen. This "2 cm" must have belonged to divisional Panzerabwehr Abteilung (Gebirgs-Panzerabwehr-Abteilung 44). According to Lexikon-der-Wehrmacht it comprised of:
- Abteilungsstab,
- Nachrichtenzug,
- 3 Panzerabwehr-Kompanien (mot) with 12 Panzerabwehr-Geschützen each,
- 6. Fla-MG-Kompanie 55 with 12 2-cm Flak (mot).
The 4th company was MaschinenGewehr-Kompanie, so it is probable that this "2 cm" indeed is included in 39 machineguns lost. If Horst Rhode writes only about 'MG' lost and not about 'sMG' or 'lMG' then it's even more probable.

Regards,
MJU

PS. Polish 20 mm FK-A was not 'a cannon' but still 'a machinegun' ('heaviest', but machinegun), similarly German aerial weapons up to calibre of 20 mm were all machineguns, eg. MG-131, MG-151/20 and MG-FF.

It is also from "Armia Kraków" by Władysław Steblik and from ww2 day by day.

The wrong numbers you gave are the same numbers as those here:

http://www.feldgrau.com/InfDiv.php?ID=41

But there is 360 wounded, not 300.

Anyway - only on 16th of September this division lost 124 KIA (including 7 officers) and hundreds of wounded - according to ww2 day by day (Steblik gives the same number of KIA and he also gives exact number of WIA lost on that day but I don't have his book at the moment - it was something around 300).

If some have Steblik's "Armia Kraków" at the moment he can check what sources does Steblik provide for these numbers (he bases on German sources) - I don't remember now what sources exactly does he list.

Panzer IV from 5. Panzer-Division lost near Sambor (south-eastern Poland). In the background we can see Fahrschulewagen I (it seems that Germans took it to Poland for the campaign of 1939):

As far as I know according to "official sources" Germans didn't take any of such vehicles to Poland in 1939:

Luftwaffe casualties:

According to "L'Armee Polonaise dans les Duex-Sevres. La contribution des Polonais dans la Liberation de l'Europe (1939-1945)", page 14 (basing on SAHT, Archives du Service Historique de l'armee de terre, Vincennes):

"[...] En effet, une note de l'etat major des armees datee du 20 avril 1940, citant des sources allemandes, mentionne les statistigues suivantes repertoriees au 11 septembre 1939: [...] 413 avions [...] detruits".

According to Cajus Bekker ("Angriffshohe 4000", 1964) Luftwaffe lost 664 planes in Poland in September of 1939 (this includes 285 destroyed and 379 damaged).

According to Cajus Bekker 734 Luftwaffe soldiers were recognized as killed.

Cajus Bekker was basing on "reliable source documents - documents of Luftwaffe quartermastery" and on relations of Luftwaffe pilots.

According to Adam Kurowski, "Lotnictwo Polskie w 1939 roku" ("Polish Air Force in 1939"), publishing house MON, Warsaw 1962 (basing on data of Department of Provision of Headquarters of Luftwaffe), Luftwaffe lost 564 planes including 285 destroyed and 279 damaged.

According to Jerzy B. Cynk - "Siły Lotnicze Polski i Niemiec", 1989 ("Air Forces of Poland and Germany") Luftwaffe lost 521 planes during the Polish campaign (this includes 258 damaged in 100% - 60% and 263 damaged in 59% - 10%; those damaged in less than 10% were not included in this number). Out of those 263 damaged in 59% - 10% - according to Cynk - only around 50% were later repaired or reconstructed and came back to units.

According to some other sources only 70 out of those 263 damaged in 59% - 10% planes were possible to be repaired.

According to Jerzy B. Cynk, out of those 258 planes damaged in 100% - 60%, 232 were planes which did not come back from the action (were shot down). He does not write how many out of those 263 damaged in 59% - 10% were those which did not come back from the action.
According to Cajus Bekker 734 Luftwaffe soldiers were recognized as killed.
According to "Wojna Obronna Polski 1939" ("Defensive War of Poland 1939", 1979), OKL (Oberkommando der Luftwaffe) reported the following casualties: 386 KIA, 163 MIA, 407 WIA = 956.

According to Tadeusz Jurga - "Obrona Polski 1939", 1990 ("Defence of Poland 1939") and according to Materials and Documents of (Polish) Military Historical Institute, Luftwaffe lost: 326 killed (60 officers), 361 wounded (65 officers), 98 missing (16 officers) = 785 (141 officers).

According to Fritz Hahn ("Waffen und Geheimwaffen des Deutschen Heeres 1933 - 1945", 1986) - Luftwaffe casualties in September were initially reported as 283 dead (46 officers), 242 wounded (46 officers) and 234 missing (38 officers) = 759 (130 officers).

According to Marius Emmerling ("Luftwaffe over Poland", three volumes, 2002 - 2007) - casualties of flying personnel given between 1st and 28th of September (summing up all info from different pages of three volumes of "Luftwaffe over Poland") - 177 dead, 221 missing, 111 wounded = 509. Emmerling writes that 247 planes were "lost" - did not come back from the action.

From Axis History Forum (thread about Luftwaffe casualties in Poland):
Fortunately the Wehrmacht had very accurate accounts, listing losses of men and equipment. These accounts were updated 3 times each month. I found now the original report from 6.1.1940 telling the losses for the time from 21.12.1939 till 31.12.1939, the losses for the whole December 1939 and the losses from the 1.9.1939 till 31.12.1939.
These are the ten-daily (later monthly) loss summaries prepared for Wehrmachtsführungsstab. A word of caution on them. I have done work on the personnell losses contained in them from 1941 onwards, and on that side at least, it is clear that the Luftwaffe reporting did not keep pace with events. For the immediately preceding period, they invariably give only a fraction of the actual losses, which is evident from later reports which give much higher figures. I don't know if the same problem existed with regard to aircraft losses in 1939, but I would at least be careful to assume so. The way to find out would be to look into the reports for the next months, and see if the figures change. If you should be in Freiburg, RW19/1390 would probably be the place to look.

cheers

Polish Anti Aircraft defence shot down at least over 110 Luftwaffe planes (the exact amount is not known). It also shot down some Soviet planes.

By the way - I'm going to buy this book:

"Red starts - ally of black crosses over Poland. Soviet Air Force over Kresy. September - October 1939."

When I read it I will post some info about overal Soviet Air Force casualties in the Polish campaign and Polish Air Force casualties in combats against the Soviets (as far as I know there are such info in chapters 3.3., 2.7., 2.4., 1.3.).

Chapters 1.8 and 2.6 seems to be very interesting:

"1.8. Spadochroniarze sowieccy nad Polską 17 IX 1939" ("1.8. Soviet paratroopers over Poland 17 IX 1939").

"2.6. Sowiecki desant na Stanisławów" ("Soviet airborne landing in Stanisławów").

What do you think about this?:

http://www.panzerworld.net/fallweiss

Killed (soldiers + officers = total)
Wounded
Missing
Sick

AOK3:

1188 + 58 = 1246
2835 + 99 = 2934
97 + 4 = 101
686 + 5 = 691

AOK4:

166 + 16 = 182
1989 + 27 = 2016

AOK8:

940 + 34 = 974
2490 + 61 = 2551
4351 + 39 = 4390

AOK10:

1179 + 72 = 1251
8187 + 109 = 8296
665 + 5 = 670

AOK14:

1785 + 39 = 1824
6182 + 27 = 6209
950 + 2 = 952

Mil.Bef.Posen:

2 + 1 = 3

578 + 3 = 581

SS:

21 + 1 = 22
50
5

Total:

Dead: 5281 + 221 = 5502
Wounded: 21734 + 323 = 22057

AOK 4 - 182 KIA, 2016 WIA, 160 MIA and 383 sick???? On page 1 on this topic I show some details from this army units. If XIX Motorized Corps is not included (650 KIA, 1586 MIA and WIA - but if not in AOK 4, than must be included in AOK 3) - than only III Corps units (50 ID and "Netze" Brigade) have higher number of died soldiers (50 ID - 192 KIA, 69 MIA, 397 WIA, "Netze" Brigade - 197 KIA, 48 MIA, 309 WIA = 389 KIA, 117 MIA, 706 WIA - no sources about sicks). But we have too some sources from 3 ID (from 11-18 September only - 104 KIA, 17 MIA, 211 WIA) = 493 KIA, 134 MIA, 917 WIA - there are only three divisions from AOK 4 (and 3 ID casualties from one week only). Same in AOK 8 - only 30 ID had about 800 KIA and 617 MIA (mostly during Battle of Bzura).
Most of MIA soldiers was in fact KIA. But is still big difference between this dates and official german dates. It's possible, that thousands of Wehrmacht soldiers died of wounds later (official data: 16343 KIA, 320 WIA, 27280 WIA = 43943)?? Or mayby - have they different sources?? I don't belive this sources.

I started this topic - for verify official casualties evidence from campaign. But we have any evidences from lot of units from September 1939 (mayby from 10 divisions only, and from few others - we have incomplete evidence).

I don't belive this sources.
I don't know what are their sources - because the author of the article did not give any references. He only listed his sources at the bottom of the site - probably these are these ones:

AHA 3011/39 g.K AHA I b
AHA 3102/39 g.K AHA I b

I just put them here to show how big differences there are between different statistics.

Let's take a look on this source - 8. Army at the beginning:
AOK8:

940 + 34 = 974
2490 + 61 = 2551
4351 + 39 = 4390
961 + 22 = 983
According to statistic in "Wojna Obronna" - page 850 - which is said to be based on internal daily reports of armies - each army reported (only Heer casualties):

3 Army: 1985 KIA, 620 MIA oraz 4768 WIA = 7373
4 Army: 989 KIA, 340 MIA, 2258 WIA
8 Army: 1892 KIA unknown number of MIA, 5840 WIA
10 Army: 1636 KIA, 871 MIA, 13096 WIA
14 Army: 2105 KIA, 1337 MIA, 7767 WIA

Total in those 5 armies: 8607 KIA, 3168 MIA (KIA + MIA = 11775), 33729 WIA.

The data does not - however - include casualties of some units - especcialy those, documents of which were destroyed (for example some units from 14. Army - e.g. 5. Panzer-Division).

So we can see that according to "Wojna Obronna" 8. Army lost 1892 KIA, unknown number of MIA and 5840 WIA.

But when it comes to casualties of each division of this army, I found the following data - it gives different numbers (higher), and - what is even more important - most probably this data does not show the complete casualty list of these units from the whole campaign, but only from some period of time:

24. ID - 472 KIA, 98 MIA (ww2 day by day says, that these are only casualties from the battle of Bzura and only until 12th of September 1939)
30. ID - 795 KIA, 617 MIA (same as above)
- I./26. infantry regiment from 30. ID between 13th and 20th of September - 39 KIA, 87 MIA, 58 WIA
17. ID - 291 KIA, 122 MIA (as above - ww2 day by day claims, that this is only from the battle of Bzura up to 12.09.1939)
- Aufklarungs Abteilung of 17. ID - 40 KIA, 57 WIA, number of MIA is not given
10. ID - 352 KIA, 76 MIA

All together: 1910 KIA only in those four infantry divisions (if not including casualties of I./IR.26 between 13. - 20. IX).

To this we must add casualties of SS "Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler" suffered in period when it was part of 8. Army, and also casualties of non-divisional, army and Corps units - as well as casualties of independent I./Panzer-Regiment 23.

I also found something similar in "Die Schlacht an der Bzura im September 1939 aus deutscher und polnischer Sicht" by R. Elble - page 137 - R. Elble writes:

"Yet on the first day of the battle at the Bzura, 30. Infanterie-Division [general Kurt von Briesen] lost 800 KIA, over 100 MIA, 750 WIA and 3,000 captured."

So it seems that these are only casualties of 30. Infanterie-Division suffered during the first day of the battle of Bzura.

It is now clear that even data given by "Wojna Obronna" reffering to casualties of 8. Army is incomplete - because when summing up casualties of units of the 8. Army - we receive a bigger number.

Similar problem is with the 10. Army and also with the 14. Army - and most probably also with 3. Army and 4. Army.

Let's see what were casualties of 14. Army according to "Wojna Obronna":
14 Army: 2105 KIA, 1337 MIA, 7767 WIA
And now this one from http://www.panzerworld.net/fallweiss :
AOK14:

1785 + 39 = 1824
6182 + 27 = 6209
950 + 2 = 952
6127 + 32 = 6159
It can be seen that both number of KIA and WIA - as well as WIA - from "Wojna Obronna" - is higher. But even numbers from "Wojna Obronna" are lower than real casualties were.

In fact only two divisions of this army lost - according to other documents:

28. Infanterie-Division - 410 KIA, 169 MIA, 863 WIA
1. Gebirgs-Division - 405 KIA, 79 MIA, 918 WIA, 608 sick

And these were not divisions which suffered the highest casualties from this army during the Polish Campaign - 8. Infanterie-Division suffered the highest casualties. There was also a number of other divisions from this army - including 5. Panzer-Division - which suffered high men losses.

Unfortunately almost all documents on casualties of some divisions of this army (including 5. PD and 8. ID) were destroyed and do not exist - and casualties of those divisions are for shure not included in both statistics quoted above.
As you can see - when comparing with casualties of some single divisions of 4. Army - even data given by "Wojna Obronna" on its casualties - is too low:
4 Army: 989 KIA, 340 MIA, 2258 WIA
Not even mentioning this one... :
AOK4:

166 + 16 = 182
1989 + 27 = 2016
158 + 2 = 160
382 + 1 = 383
While in fact:

- Netze Brigade - 197 KIA, 48 MIA, 309 WIA
- 50 ID - 192 KIA, 69 MIA, 397 WIA
- 3 ID (from 11-18 September only) 104 KIA, 17 MIA, 211 WIA
- 32 ID - only on 16th of September during the battle of Warsaw 96 Infantry Regiment from 32 ID lost 150 men during combats in Warsaw's Praga district.
- Guderian's casualties between 1st and 4th of September - over 150 KIA, over 700 MIA and WIA

- 208 ID - 176 KIA, 102 MIA, 359 WIA
If XIX Motorized Corps is not included (650 KIA, 1586 MIA and WIA - but if not in AOK 4, than must be included in AOK 3)
Or it can be not included in any AOK.

But between 1st and 4th of September it was in 4. Army.
