Yes, i am looking for not only divisional or regimental units, but also scratch units from the size of platoon, company, battalion or brigade.

For example, Waffen SS kradschutzen abteilung Suleika and Waffen SS Sturmgeschutz Einheit Harem from the Kampfgruppe 1001 Nights

Suleika and Harem were the names of the Kampfgruppen. I don´t think you will find named platoons or companies.

Vielen Dank für die hilfe,

But Beevor's Berlin book mentioned that Suleika was a motorcycle detachment and Harem is an assault gun company from the Kampfgruppe 1001 Nights....anyhow, i think you're correct on the platoon and companies that are named. I think they don't exist

Panzermahn again.. Suleika and Harem were codenames for detachements of Kampfgruppe 1001 Nacht for a certain operation. It was not a official designation of a unit.

Then why this focus on elements from Kampfgruppe 1001 Nights?

Some questions on the name,
SS-Grenadier-Regiment 1 - "Landstorm Nederland" (also "Landwacht Niederlande")
I don't know whether you meant this unit's name semantically, metaphorically or literally but according to what I know, the cadre of Landstorm Nederland came from the Landwacht Nederland which was initially a home guard unit under Wehrmacht before it was absorbed by the waffen SS. What do you think?

SS-(schnelles) Regiment - "Kalewala" (planned but not formed)
I think it is Kalavela according to the Finnish national epic.

14.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (galizische / ukrainische Nr.1) - "Galizien"
15.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr.1) - "Lettland"
19.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (lettische Nr.2) - "Latvia"
20.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (estnische Nr.1) - "Estland"
29.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (italienische Nr.1) - "Italien"
30.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (weißruthenische Nr.1) - "Weißruthenien"
I think for these Waffen SS divisions, they are not "named" but stated with the nationality as an indicator of the nationality of the division

31.SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Division - "Batschka" (also "Kukuruz", "Lombard")
31.SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Division - "Böhmen und Mähren"
Are you referring to the same division or different one? I remember i read somewhere that the historian Rudolf Pencz mentioned in his book For the Homeland! History of the 31st SS Freiwiligen Division (Helion press) that the name Böhmen-Mähren is just a myth.

SS-Grenadier-Division - "Neu Turkistan"
Are you referring to the SS Musselmannische Nr. 1 unit? (I am not sure about this?)

Is the below "named" units are fact or myth?

SS-Freiwiligen Regiment "Varjag"
SS-Regiment "Baranovichi"
Kompanie "Dora" of the Sonderkommando Dirlewenger
SS Einsatzstab "Rosenberg"
SS Nebel Abteilung "Obersalzberg"
SS Begleitkommando "Reichsführer-SS"
SS Begleitkommando "Führerhauptquartier"
SS-Polizei (Lettische) Frewiligen Regiment "Riga"

Other miscellaneous "named" SS units

SS Bataillon "Vendetta"
SS Bataillon "Debica"
SS Bataillon "Patria" (I think this one wasn't formed)
SS Bataillon "Italia" (I think this one wasn't formed)

All were designated under the Legion SS Italiana/28th SS Grenadier Division (Italianische Nr. 1)

Britische Freikorps
SS Einsatzgruppe "Ezquerra" (This is not a Kampfgruppe)
SS Polizei Regiment "Bozen"/"Bolzano" (also known as SS Polizei Regiment "Südtyroler" during the initial formation)
SS Jagdeinsatz "Italien" (part of the Jadgverbänd Südwest)
SS Jagdeinsatz "Nordfrankreich" (part of the Jadgverbänd Südwest)
SS Jagdeinsatz "Südfrankreich" (part of the Jadgverbänd Südwest)
Waffen Gebirgs Brigade der SS "Karstjäger"

Hi folks, for the umpteenth time, there was NO SS-PGR 5 "Thule!" Thanks for the list Ivanwss, I'm not singling you out at all, but that unit is a sore-spot for me because too many poorly-researched books make mention of it.

"Thule" was the honor title granted in 1942 to the SS-Infanterie Reg. 9, which was then assigned to the SS-PGD Totenkopf, where it became the SS-Schnelle/Kradschützen Reg. Thule. It was disbanded in the late spring of 1943, after the Kharkov campaign and prior to Kursk. The SS-FHA then, a few months later, tried to pass the Thule title on to SS-PGR 5, which was formerly known as SS-PGR 1 (not to be confused with SS-PGR 1 LSSAH, this one was formerly SS-Totenkopf Infanterie Reg. 1, and before that 1. SS-Totenkopf Standarte) at the same time that the honor title Theodor Eicke was given to SS-PGR 6 (formerly SS-PGR 3, SS-TIR 3, and 3. SS-TS). But the regiment and division resisted this, the regiment was the original Totenkopf unit, with the longest traditions of that service, so it used the honor title Totenkopf.

Therefore, it was SS-Panzergrenadier Regiment 5 "Totenkopf" which confusingly served in 3. SS-Panzer Division "Totenkopf" (designations active from late 1943). All documentation within the division shows this usage (see documents in Voperal's Soldaten Kämpfer Kameraden divisional history, for example) and by some point in 1944 the SS-FHA also accepted it, so that its official documents also show this title.

For Panzermahn, I know nothing about Waffen-SS units named "Varjag," "Baranovichi," "Obersalzberg," or "Rosenberg." There were indeed two "Dora" companies in the Dirlewanger unit, but there precise role is clouded by the fiction that Fritjof Elmo Porsch ("Ingo Petersson") layered over his accounts in postwar books.

I believe the SS-Begleitkommando RFSS is what became the Begleit Bataillon/Sturmbrigade RFSS, and then the 16. SS-PGD RFSS. With the upgradings, a new SS-Begleit Bataillon RFSS was formed during 1944, and was often called SS-Bataillon "Gross" after its commander, especially when it fought near Berlin in 1945.

I don't know of a specific SS-Begleitkommando Führerhauptquartier, but there was always an SS company mixed in with the Führer Begleit unit from at least 1943 onward. In the summer of 1944 it formed part of the Führer Begleit Brigade.

Finally, yes there was the SS-Polizei Reg. 1 (lettische) which was given the honor title "Riga" and wore a special cuff title. It was, as its name shows, a police unit, and not part of the Waffen-SS, though its survivors were reassigned to the Waffen-SS after it was destroyed during the summer of 1944.

Return to “Heer, Waffen-SS & Fallschirmjäger”
