Italian use of auxiliary "hiwis" on the Eastern Front?
Did the Italian forces on the Eastern Front use any local volunteers who weren't frontline soldiers but served in auxiliary roles like construction, transport, messengers, guards, etc? If so, what regions were they recruited from, in what approximate numbers, how were they compensated, and how reliable/effective were they?

They did. Some hivis in infantry divisions ( around 500 each) an a gendarmerie force from ucrains( around 4000) under Carabinieri in rear areas, Notice are very few because documentations are lost in the reterat.
From relations the gendarmerie was pretty good.
There where also a Cossak unity in combat duty and was a proget to form a Georgian Legion , but was dismessed.
