Romanian Volksdeutsche, 1940-1941
Romanian Volksdeutsche, 1940-1941
Hello,
Has anyone some sources dealing with this topic?
I'm especially looking for Romanian Volksdeutsche's reactions to the deployment of a German military mission in their country as of October 12th, 1940.
Thank you.
Regards,
CNE503

No shortage of propaganda articles in local German newspapers.
They also managed to appoint Kreisleiters for all 10 or so Kreise of Gau Banat. Although I think this Gau never existed officially as an NSDAP Gau? Hopes were running high...

Good afternoon CNE503,
"Banatdeutsche" and "Banater Schwaben" were the former designations with my grandparents.

Personally, I am only familiar with the topic from hearsay, unfortunately.

Hello,
Have you the reference picture for the first newspaper (from Timisoara, October 13th, 1940)?

I just learnt that Johnny Weissmüller - Tarzan for the TV - was a Romanian Swabian.
Thank you for the sources!

"Banatdeutsche" were still considered refugees here in Germany in the 1950s, I know this from the records of my grandfather, who was the mayor of our community Bad Zwischenahn from 1953 to 1967.
Some newspaper clippings of the time are not relevant, purely superficial.
Landsmannschaft der Banater Schwaben e.V. https://www.banater-schwaben.org/start
(Just ask there, they will answer you.)
A very complex issue, comparable to the Sudetendeutschen, etc.
I myself am far too young, what I remember, I picked up in earlier decades, nothing more, unfortunately.
The German-language Internet is more than complex on these topics, unfortunately only little in English, that is in the nature of things...
Johnny Weissmuller: Funny chimpanzee "Cheetah" steels wife's wig in 1971 German TV show
Very famous clip, people here talk about this to this very day...
It is nice, that there is some humor in many heavy topics, unfortunately that is far too rare.

All headlines are from Banater Deutsche Zeitung.
Re: Romanian Volksdeutsche, 1940-1941
Two short videos about "Banatdeutsche" talking in their typical german dialect:
Deutsche im Banat Freidorf 1997
Banat: Deutsche im Banat - Wojteg
The suffering and misery, that these people had to go through after 1945, that is not tangible for me personally.
I remember such stories of people from the Sudetenland, but all that is history, a German history, and our past.
Hans
There are hundreds of similar videos, the tragedy of these people is difficult to grasp, and unfortunately no longer an issue today. Official support there is probably, the details are unfortunately not known to me ?

Re: Romanian Volksdeutsche, 1940-1941
This book, even if it mainly deals with the Waffen-SS. It has quite a few chapters dedicated to the Volksgruppe and its history, but it's only available in German and Romanian.
The arrival of the Wehrmacht Mission happened almost simultaneously (in the timeframe of a month) with the formation of the NSDAP of the German Ethnic Group in Romania, and its official recognition as a legal entity by Antonescu. As such, you can imagine that the Romanian Volksdeutsche were quite enthusiastic about both events, but I'd argue that the latter was far more important, given the issues that they faced during the Interwar period.
I can provide photos of the few pages that deal with the German Mission, if you understand Romanian, or if you are willing to have the text translated.
