In german military organisation the post of chief of staff only exists at the level of army corps (and higher) and not for a division. Only exists the Ia at this level. But in french military organisation the post of chief od staff is existing in a division. So, Stubaf de VAUGELAS was Ia of the division but in books of historian or veterans, they give him the french name of his fonctions so "chef d'état-major" but it was the same.

Verbindungsoff. between the division and the Generalinspektion. At the generalinspektion the french verbindungsoffizier was Hstuf RENAULT.

I would like to have further infos about the formation: where it was formed (SS-Pz.Jg. (Stu.Gesch.) Schule Janowitz or SS-Pz.Jg.(Stu.Gesch.) A.u.E.-Abt 3 on SS-training ground "Böhmen", Beneschau near Praque ?, I know, that W-Ostuf. Michel was send to "Böhmen" to get some tank-hunters there), was it equipped with StuGesch or Jagdpanzer 38 ("Hetzer") and was it employed in 1945?! Any information would be wellcome!!

at SS-Pz.Gren.Schule Kienschlag, SS-training ground „Böhmen“, following courses were held for French officer candidates:

07.05.1944 1.wallonisch-französischer Kriegs-Waffen-Junkerlehrgang an der SS-PzGrenSchule bis 09.09.1944,

24.08.1944
Wallon.+franz.Führerbewerber-Lehrgang vom 24.08.44 bis 30.11.44
Der anschließende Waffenjunker-Lg. wurde in der Zeit vom 01.12.44 – 31.03.45 durchgeführt.

2.Wallon.+franz.Waffen-Junker-Lehrgang an der SS-PzGrenSchule bis 31.3.1945
Nach einem Führerbewerber-Lehrgang an der Schule Kienschlag vom 24.8.1944 bis 30.11. 1944 schloß sich am 1.12.1944 der Waffen-Junker-Lehrgang für wallonische und französische Junker an, der am 31.3. 1945 endete

Dear Roland,
thank you for these informations. That joins my thread on non-germanic volunteers and waffen-junkerschulen. So, new french officers for the division Charlemagne of the SS had Kriegs-Waffenjunker-Lehrgänge and not Kriegsjunker-Lehrgänge ( only for germanic volunteers ). On the other hand, i don't understand why the Walloons attended the same courses. That's strange. Walloons and Finns were the only non-germanic volunteers who had real ss-ranks.
Otherwise, i found this on the net :

Officer candidate schools. Waffen-SS schools designed to train and provide officer material are of two basic types: SS officer candidate schools (SS-Junkerschulen), which train German and "Germanic" officers; and SS and foreign personnel officer candidate schools (SS- und Waffen-Junkerschulen), which train both German personnel and "non-Germanic" foreigners. The courses last about 6 months and are differentiated as either war-officer-candidate courses (Kriegsjunker-Lehrgänge) or war-officer-candidate courses for foreign personnel (Kriegs-Waffenjunker-Lehrgänge).

Foreign officers of the SS. "Non-Germanic" officer candidates attend a war officer candidate course for foreign personnel (Kriegs-Waffenjunker-Lehrgang) held at the SS and foreign personnel officer-candidate schools (SS- und Waffenjunker-Schulen). After its completion they return to their units and after a period of 2 months are appointed Waffen-Untersturmführer by the RF-SS upon the recommendation of their regimental commander.

Hallo,

Maybe someone knows, how to contact with Mr. Robert Forbes? I tried via publishers' e-mail, but no effect. Our forensic medicine team performed some exhumations of fallen "Charlemagne" soldiers in Pommern and I think we have some information, that could explain some doubts of the author. We have also some Russian documents mentioning skirmishes with the troops of "Charlemagne" - I think more precise that witnesses accounts. The author could also use Polish sources about fighting in Kolberg - they are in a great numbers. It would be much easier to "order" the facts and dates.
