I have a death notice of a Flemish SS Volunteer who was born in East-Moline USA. He died on the Eastern front on 07/02/1943.

Pics of US deserter/Waffen SS member Martin Monti?

Post by Rand » 23 Mar 2004, 00:18

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone can post any pictures of Martin James Monti, the American deserter that joined the Waffen-ss in Italy? I know it is very unlikely that any photos exist of him wearing his German uniform, but there should be pictures from his court martial and trial.

Thanks
Rand

An American soldier joining the Waffen SS? There were many Russian deserters that joined the German Army during the war but an American? 8O I’m not telling it’s untruth but I never heard about it.

Here's a poor quality picture of Martin James Monti, an American who flew his P-38 over to the Germans, and surrendered. He later joined the Waffen-SS, and also read propaganda on radio broadcasts. Do a forum search for more info on him.

I was wondering where in the world did you get this enformationm?
I mean it is obvious that there had to be US personal serving in the Gernman armed forces. By the mere size of the Germans living herein 1939, But i for one would like a little more proff.

To ritterkreuz1945, do a forum search, Marcus had a detailed account of Monti's service, from American to German. I don't believe that I could travel back in time and plant this photo in the New York times Archives in 1946..... or did I?!?!?!?!?

Will post more on this guy tomorrow...

In the book : "Dresden 1945 - Das Deutsche Hiroshima" by Alexander McKee
there is several accounts mentioning a WAffen-SS officer who belonged
to the "Georg Washington Legion" this officer tried to convince the US POWS
and other as well that they should join the Waffen-SS to fight the Russians
(Soviets).

Good book inded, McKee was himself in the army during the war, and visited
Dresden after the war and saw the destruction.

Best regards,

Georg
