Re: Volksdeutsche
Georges,
Below is the email I sent:
(Please let me know if you cannot understand my writing.)
Mr. Jerome,
It seems you are very familiar with the St. Avold area & WWII.
I am hopeful you may be able to provide me assistance / direction with this research project.
Generally, I'm researching for my employer whose father was assigned to St. Avold in 1945 as part of the U.S. Army AGRC (American Graves Registration Commission).
The unit was, as you probably know, in charge of establishing the Lorraine American Cemetery.
His specific interests are:
1. in the family with whom he lived....billeted in private housing in St. Avold proper
2. with the German soldier he befriended who was part of the POW labor force.
1.Hence my interest in the 1941 phone book for St. Avold.
As regards the French family with whom he stayed, I have no specific/accurate name, just a possible name of Grasak, or similar to.
It was a mother... described as old...with (2) daughters ...the older being around 16 yrs.
No husband/father was present.
The mother was employed as the cook for the unit at the cemetery.
My direction here would be to search, if that is possible, land/property records for the private address for the period just prior to WWII and post WWII with the hope of discovering the surname.
A French researcher checked the 1936 & 1946 censuses, but given that the surname is uncertain..not sure the information is useful.
2. Through the US researcher there are also billeting payments for a POW stockade, Quartier Lahitolle in St. Avold.
(I can find no reference in any of my online searches.)
Also have been in touch with the St. Avold Archivea; they seem unfamiliar with a POW stockard in the area post WWII.
First is to determine the name & location of the stockade, then to determine which military authority controlled it
(I assume French, having been handed over by then from the US/Allied forces), then to determine whether rosters of the POW occupants exisit & how to then get those rosters.
I do have the name of the German POW, Fischenich. Unfortunately, that is all the information I have.
No first name, no age (other than he was old __this the remembrance of a 21 yr. Am. soldier), no family or place of origin information.
Fischenich painted. As a gift, he presented 2 of his paintings to my employer's father. They are still in his possession.
(The fact that he painted during this time is perplexing...how did he find time? & where did he get the painting supplies?)
A German researcher had no success pursuing a search, though we thought we were close at one time.
As you know, German records are difficult to secure even given more specific information.
Mr. Jerome, should you have any suggestions in how to go forward or the contact information for a researcher in the area who would like to take on this project, I'd very much appreciate it.
Thank you,
Nancy Garcia
