The Fatima Cult derived from the alleged appearance of the Virgin Mary to three sickly children at Fatima, Portugal, in 1917.

Following the appearance of Bolshevik Russia and World Communism between the First and Second World Wars, the Cult was soon transformed into an ideological crusade.

The Virgin's prophecy that Bolshevik Russia, unless annihilated, would bring destruction to all nations became a powerful religious and ideological weapon in the armory of the Catholic Church and her political allies; this particularly during the rise of Hitler, who preached exactly the same doctrine.

The Fatima Cult, with its anti-Russian message, was magnified by Pope Pius XII, who gave it a new impetus when Russia was attacked by Hitler in 1941.

After the War, Pius XII used it in his conduct of the Cold War. Monster pilgrimages, totaling one million people each, were organized to the Fatima Shrine. The Pope used to send his own Papal Legate to give official sanction to the political message of the Virgin Mary.

I'm looking for information about the Legião Verde. How many volounteers stayed after Spain's withdrawal of their troops in 1944? Some volounteers must have stayed just like some of the Spanish did, were these men trasferred to the Waffen-SS?

Best regards/ Daniel

I would think that a Portugese soldier may have ended up in the Charlemange division had he volunteered, or the Ezquerra battalion.

Could anybody say me if there was portuguese that served in the Wehrmacht or Waffen SS (more probably here). I suppose that there may be Portuguese in this organizations because Portugal had a fascist government in this years, but i do not find anything about this matter.

Thanks

The sapnish division Azul had a battalion (about 500 men) of "Viriatos" - as the portuguese volunteers were called during the spanish civil war . In the waffen- SS , about 50 portuguese remained,I don't know if rattached to the spanish SS or enlisted individually in other SS units .
Also the Gestapo send some advisers to Portugal to help Salazar to form the PIDE.... But this is not your question ,really ....

Padraic,

Green Legion is something very very rare..Nobody seem to had any info about them. Maybe because the it is part of the Wehrmacht, not Waffen SS. By the way, you should contact the Azul division veterans or their association. Perhaps they might be able to help you...
