Erkennungsmarken ID

#1

Post by krzbar » 20 Mar 2016, 11:27

Hello,
I have just found out that a long missing (last we heard of him was in summer 1944) member of my family died as a Wermacht soldier (on Friday after over 70 years we located his grave). He was a Polish volunteer taken POW in the September campaign and somehow (working on figuring out how) ended up on the Western Front in 1944. I was provided with this Erkennungsmarke for him : St.Kp.N.E.W.20-1053- I understand that St.Kp. stands for training company, but what do the other characters stand for? I would appreciate any help.

Thank you
Best wishes
Krzysztof

Hi again!
I received my uncle's exhumation report from 1957 and there his dogtag is St.Kp.N.E. 20-1053- . The W must have somehow been added on at some stage. Does N.E. stand for Nachrichten-Ersatz? This translates to "news", "signals" unit? What are such units?

Thank you
Krzysztof

Here is a list of http://www.heinrich-schwenker.italodito ... f10033.pdf Erkennungsmarken abbrevations.

That "W" - is it possible that it's actually A? Then you have NEA - Nachrichten-Ersatz-Abteilung 20.

According to Tessin:
Nachrichten-Ers. Abt. 20 * 26. 8. 1939 in Hamburg, WK X; 1. 10. 1942 geteilt in Ers. Abt. (bish. Abt. 20) und Ausb. Abt. (bish. Abt. 30), beide in Hamburg. U: Div. 160; 10. 6. 1940 Kdr. d. Nachrichtentruppen X

I have received information from Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt) and his EKM was -1053- St. Kp. N. E. A. 20, standing for Stamm-Kompanie Nachricten-Ersatz Abteilung 20 and he died being in the Stab III Bataillon Grenadier- Regiment 937, 245 Infantry Division (earlier seems to have also been in 3. Company, Reserve-Grenadier Bataillon 163, 189 Reserve Division)
