Last photos before the mutiny...(1943/09/17)
Hello Folks !
As some of you may know, i'm a young guy living in Villefranche de Rouergue, and i'm interresting in the mutiny who occur the 17/09/1943.
Looking for informations, i took contact with some locals peoples, and did some research about it.
On the municipal Archives, i found some identity photos taken by the locals photographers at the time, who show some Bosnian-Croats soldiers of
13 Pionnier btl.
Days later, i met a person, called "Aimé Albagnac", really interresting person, more documented in the "french resistance fact" that occur later in the war, but we share some testimony, and informations together. Then i told him about this photos, and he told me that he did a testimony of a person (Jacques Maravelle), who was the son of a photographer at that time. I've met Mr Maravelle, and he told me his story.
Also He told me to reffer to the testimony made by Aimé Albagnac, so i've tryed to translated it in english for you :
Testimony of Jacques Maravelle, March 19, 2007 - By Aimé Albagnac --(Translated from French by Nicolas Camatta)
"At that time, my mother became a photographer, in place of my father, prisoner in Germany.
She took advantage of Thursday morning market day to make the shots of the passport photos.
A few days before a certain Thursday, a German officer had come to make a "rendez-vous"
to carry out photographs of identity without specifying how much.
This Thursday, to her surprise, she sees maneuvering and stopping in front of the store, under the arcades, a whole section,
about thirty to forty soldiers. While we lacked photographic plates it was a moment of panic but it was necessary to execute the job.
The German officer had to organise his men in groups of eight (four sitting and four standing on the same photographic plate).
Had (the officer) taken the decision to place a sentry per floor, for fear of seeing escape from the roofs some who already had to give signs
Of the revolt which ensued.
Everything went very well and a few days after the officer returned to fetch the photos that had been taken and...
I see (Now Mr Maravelle is talking on simple present) this man, passing Photos like a card game, saying by setting them aside for some : "Kapout, kapout ...".
We know today what happened.
It's a anecdote i lived, I was ten years old ..."
Mr Maravelle told me that after the war, his mother gaves the photos to the Municipality of Villefranche de Rouergue. But now, in the Municipal Archives, only a few photos are still the original ones, and a lots are just copy of thoses photos.
Anyway, i wanted to share with you all thoses photos i found, some of them are maybe the really last one of some mutineers, but it's impossible to me to put a name on them.
Hope it can interrest you as it interreting me !
I put a number with the photo like that we can talk about more easily.
By the way, one of the soldier remind me a certain Nikola Vukelic, do you think it could be him ? (N°26)
All the best,
Nicolas
