11.Freiwilligen Panzergrenadier Divison Nordland

Post by Opa-Ludwig » 12 Sep 2020 10:56

My grandfather was born in 1915, he was drafted in 1939 but was postponed because he was a farmer and important to the war he was only drafted again in 1944/1945.

My grandfather fought on the Eastern Front from 01.1945-02.05.1945 (retreat battles in Pommern,Vorderpommern,WeichselVistula and outside Berlin) in the 11th SS Volunteer Panzer Grenadier Division Nordland in Pz Gren Rgt 24 Danmark, 5th Company 2nd Battalion as SS Sturmführer and machine gun rifleman. He surrendered to the Americans with the rest of the unit under the leadership of Obergruppenführer and General Steiner on May 2nd, 1945 on the Elbe and then came to the British prisoner of war in England in the village of Sussex at Camp 46, had to be in captivity for 3 years stay!

Unfortunately I could never ask my grandpa because he died when I was 3 years old in 1984!

I would be happy if I get information about the 5th Company, 2nd Batallion and more information!

Best wishes

Stefan

Hi Stefan,

not much, but as far as I know the last Kdr. of the 5th Company was SS-Hauptsturmführer Erich Seyb from February till April 1945.

Mr. Opa

there is a new book coming out in the near future that may provide some information you are asking for:

The Collapse of Pomerania 1945: Last Battles of III SS-Panzer-Korps on the Eastern Front by Tomasz Borowski (Helion & Company)

currently slated for a April 2021 release

11. SS-Freiwilligen-Panzergrenadier-Division "Nordland" was part of III SS-Panzerkorps

Hello DougW60

thanks for the information

Which publisher will the book be published by? Will it be in English or German?

Mr. Opa

the pubilisher is Helion & Company and the book is in English.

Something to look into is the author Tomasz Borowski. The spelling of his name indicates he may not be a native English speaker. If that is the case, is Helion & Company translating his work into English? only a thought
