LVF / Infanterie-Regiment 638 (new book ! and listing officers)

Post by encyclo-collaboration » 02 Dec 2020 13:47

Grégory Bouysse is proud to announce the release of his new book : « Encyclopédie de l'Ordre Nouveau – Hors-série – Français sous l'uniforme allemand Partie III : Légion des Volontaires Français contre le bolchevisme », available on Amazon : https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B08P5Y2W2F?ref ... _397514860
This book has 484 pages, 350 main biographies (from a few lines to several pages), around 400 photos and numerous appendices (including unpublished organigrams and listings).

In the two previous volumes were presented the men who belonged at one time or another to the Waffen-SS (Sutrmbrigade Frankreich & Division Charlemagne mainly). But previously there was another large unit of French volunteers in German uniform: the Légion des Volontaires Français contre le bolchevisme, or Infanterie-Regiment 638 for the Wehrmacht. It depended on the Heer, the German land army. Its creation is a private initiative, decided in July 1941 by the leaders of the collaborationist parties in Paris, following the attack on the USSR by the Germany. Not recognized by the Vichy government, it takes the form of a 1901 law association! From February 1943, it will be officially recognized as being of public utility by the civil and military authorities of the French State, which initially viewed with a dim view this private initiative, fascist parties, like the Germans, who initially slowed down the recruitment of the LVF. Initially limited to 15,000 men maximum by Hitler's decision, this figure will never be reached.
Thus, in 1943-1944, the LVF was in a way considered by the French State as a regiment of the French army (remember that France no longer has an army after the scuttling of the Toulon fleet in November 1942 , and the disbandment of the armistice army) wearing German uniform on the Eastern Front. LVF volunteers were therefore authorized to wear a French uniform when they were in the national territory. Of course, on the Eastern Front, the LVF was militarily subordinate to the Wehrmacht staff.
Set up between July and October 1941, it numbered nearly 2,300 men in October 1941, a figure that was never reached again thereafter. She rose to the front line, and fought in front of Moscow at the beginning of December 1941, in appalling temperatures and conditions. Decimated by cold and disease even more than by Soviet attacks, the LVF was withdrawn from the front to be reconstituted. From now on, it will be used against the partisans, in the forests and impenetrable marshes of central Russia and Belarus, from May 1942 to June 1944, participating in several large-scale operations. At the end of June 1944, the Red Army progressed, and the LVF found itself again, by necessity, in the front line. Nearly 600 legionaries will fight in the front line, in Bobr, standing up to redundant forces. A report from the Red Army will speak of "two French divisions"! The LVF is driven out of Belarus and retreats with the rest of the German army to the west.
Throughout the three years of its existence (July 1941 to August 1944), the LVF has seen nearly 6,000 men pass through its ranks (the figures vary from 5,800 to 6,400). In August 1944, the resting legionaries learned that they were going to be transferred to the Waffen-SS, joining other French in German uniform, to form a single large unit! We now know that nearly 1,500 legionaries were integrated into the Waffen-SS from September 1, 1944. There was therefore potentially 4,500 men left, to have previously passed into its ranks, but who, in the summer of 1944, had already demobilized, resigned, killed or injured over the past three years. Of course, as for the first two volumes, it is almost impossible at present to list all the volunteers.
This volume therefore includes the biography of 187 officers (and aspirants) of the LVF, and a hundred non-commissioned officers and soldiers among the most outstanding. Two chapters are devoted to the Légion Tricolore (36 officers excluding LVF) and the Phalange Africaine (21 officers excluding LVF). The latter unit, the size of a large company, was formed in early 1943, after the Allied landings in North Africa. Wearing a mixture of French and German uniforms, the Phalange fought in April 1943 alongside the Germans against Commonwealth troops in Tunisia. Few of them will succeed in reaching the metropolis, after the capture of Tunis at the beginning of May 1943. The phalangists will be retroactively considered as members of the LVF.
