Handschar division in Neuhammer.

And does anybody have a better quality of this photo?
Hello, Huska

Maybe in the BA.
Maybe indeed

If I remember correctly, the photo can be also found in Michaelis' "Die Gebirgs-Divisionen der Waffen-SS".

Ivan

Hello, Ivan

Good to hear that my guess was correct. :D

Do you know where I can get the book "Die Gebirgs-Divisionen der Waffen-SS" by R. Michaelis? And would you recommend it?

(I'm sorry if it's an off-topic question)
Cheers,
BG44

Hello, balkanguy44

Sadly, I don't have the book, but I remember seeing it and that it seemed very interesting! I hope to get a copy one day. I believe you may find it from time to time online, on various sales/auctions.

Cheers,
Ivan

PS
Don't worry, a (related) follow-up question is never off-topic; but an entire discussion can be (or it often simply deserves a thread of its own).

The first volunteers enlisted in Zagreb eat their first meal as SS recruits. This photo was taken in Zagreb, spring (most likely April/May) 1943.

Two soldiers of the Handschar Division with a child. If my memory serves right I have seen this photo in the war-time newspaper “Wiener Illustrierte“ where it’s said that this are two brothers who visit their younger sister.

Also from the Bundesarchiv, dated 1944, shows an inspection of some type.

Hello, Mujo

I have seen that photo in the Bundesarchiv too, but somehow I think it was taken in 1943? Such an inspection wouldn’t make sense during an Anti-Partisan War - at least for me.

Hello balkanguy44

This photograph was undoubtedly taken in 1944. The main features include armbands Croatian shields, which were not worn by the Handschar units in 1943. This also applies to the Fez, which in 1943 were worn only by German personnel and the stabsjagercompany performing the functions of an honorary company. (BA-MA. N756 Sign 168b. Harmut Schmidt an Vopersal, 8.5.72) Her photographs have repeatedly become the topic of discussion in this section.
