Hello, balkanguy44

1st photo: yes, the photo was taken around (probably during) Operation "Easter Egg".

2nd photo: the source is MNZS; it was originally posted 15 years ago on this very forum (the topic had been removed per museum's request) and has been cropped and blurred in photoshop in the meantime. I think your assumption regarding the location/timeframe is most probably right, but I have no further info on the photo.

Cheers,
Ivan

Hello Ivan,

Okay good - and I didn’t know that the photo was posted here years ago but it’s great that you remember it.

Oh, 15 years are a long time.
Cheers,
BG44

Sorry for the inconvenience, had to convert to .jpeg.
My question is, does anyone know where in Sarajevo this HQ of the Handschar Police was located? I know that SS Prinz Eugen had their HQ at Kasin Do, just on the outskirts of Sarajevo. Plus, any additional reports or quotes from books on this would be appreciated.
Cheers, Filip

Hello, Filip

Those are not "Handschar" nor Waffen-SS troops, but German-Croatian Police (Njemačko redarstvo u Hrvatskoj), with fezzes.

Cheers,
Ivan

Hey there Ivan thanks for the quick reply,

By Njemačko redarstvo, you mean local Volksdeutschers? This doesn't seem like the Croatian Gendarmerie. Why would they be wearing fezzes?

Note - just noticed their Collar Tabs, strange. Do you have any info on the pic, is it taken in Sarajevo at least?

Cheers, Filip

Hello, Filip

It was a volunteer police force (similar to army legionnaire units) that was subordinated directly to Kammerhofer (Beauftragter des Reichsführers-SS in Kroatien). I assume they were wearing fezzes because they were part of a Muslim unit within the police, but I don't know for sure (I don't have much info on the formation).

Cheers,
Ivan

PS
Those are police collar tabs, not Wehrmacht (they were similar). No further info on the photo.

Hello Ivan,

Indeed, an unusual sight. What would be such a parameter of joining a Muslim detachment of this volunteer police force, and not the Croatian Gendarmerie, per say? Their fezzes, subjectively, look very unusal - an oddly longer and thinner shape.

Kind regards, Filip

The Germans offered more money, I assume.

Addition: a recruiting poster for the German Police in Croatia (Njemačko redarstvo u Hrvatskoj), a.k.a. German-Croatian Police. Notice the German police insignia and a Croatian coat of arms on policeman's uniform. The poster also includes a call for the "Handschar" Division (at the time still unnamed), the same as most "Handschar" posters included a call for the German Police in Croatia (both being formations of the SS).

I've seen that poster many times but I never noticed that it was for police too, interesting.

Hello Ivan,

Here is that same poster, I knew I saw it "action" somewhere, quite a couple of these on the SS Kriegsberichter page.

Cheers, Filip

Hello, Filip

Yep, that's the one. On the same website, in KB Kramer's album, you will also find a "Handschar" poster calling for enlistment in "SS volunteer units and German Police in Croatia" (Hrvati! Javljajte se u dobrovoljačke SS-postrojbe i Njemačko redarstvo u Hrvatskoj!)
