Post by kindzjal » 07 Nov 2005 22:36

I'm looking for any info about the Nordkaukasische Legion and Bergkaukasische Legion.
When it was formed and how did they end ???
Also info about SULTAN GIRAY KLYCH ? Was he the commander of the Nordkaukasische Legion ?
When was he born ? How he became an ally of Germany ???
I would be pleased by anything : pics ,links, anything !

Hello Kindzjal!

About your question on the Warzaw uprising...
Do You know if there were any Kaukasian legionnares involved in fighting during the Warsaw uprising ?
The Ostmuselmanische SS-Regiment 1, under the command of SS-Obersturmführer Gulam Alimov was attached to the Dirlewanger Penal unit in August of 1944 and participated to put down the uprising. There where also two Azerbaijani battalions present in the fighting that where from the Bergmann Regiment ("Gorets").

Source and recommended reading: "The East came West - Muslim, Hindu and Buddhist Volunteers in the German Armed Forces 1941-1945" edited by Antonio J. Munoz (2001).

Here's a nice photo of Bergkaukasien Legion from "Die Wehrmacht" magazine.
Legion's armshield is clearly visible.
